Odale close: 20 years ago, $400 would buy you X amount of goods. Today, that $400 buys you less. That is a loss of purchasing power. You would need about $1000 today to have the same purchasing power. Had you bought $400 worth of gold 20 years ago, you could sell it today for about $1000 gold, maintaining your purchasing power. Its when Gold devalues that you have serious issue. Its called the gold standard for reason. Now you know, hopefully we never see the day when we through our gold and silver into the streets because they have become valueless!

I know what the gold standard is, and why we moved away from it.
Fiat money makes it easier to exchange money from country to country and since countries only have X amount of gold, they essentially only have X amount of purchasing power.
