FOOD AGAIN!!!!!!

What I have never understood is if you are turning vegan for reasons of conscience why do you want all this fake meat stuff?
There is a veggie which is severely overused, usually cooked to mush in something, and "better restaurants" use it to give the illusion of healthy eating, while serving humongous proportions, and selling deep fried appetizers.

Broccoli

This one throws me for a loop, too; same with faux leather. Why desire something that closely resembles an animal product if you detest animal products on principle? I have great respect for veganism itself (though some of its practitioners are a lot harder to respect, that can be said about anything); I've even been considering vegetarianism myself (which... those who have tracked with the food threads would know... is no small consideration given my love for meats). Still, I would want to focus on how awesome vegetables are rather than on how similar to meat they can be made out to be if I were avoiding meat on moral grounds; that seems counter-intuitive if not also counter-productive to me.

I'd like to have a better understanding of the reasoning so that I could change my mind on it, though. I just haven't heard any convincing arguments on the matter despite being around them often (my sister is a near-vegan, my mom a once-vegan, and I have a number of vegetarian/vegan friends).

Would any of our resident vegans or vegan-sympathizers like to help me see and appreciate fake meats? :)

I loooove broccoli. But, like you said, it's too often cooked to mush. I like mine still-crispy. :D

Not trying to make fun of vegetarians, I just want to share a funny story. I used to work at Ponderosa Steak House back in college. There was a girl I worked with who was a "vegetarian." One day I asked her why and she told me she just couldn't bring herself to eat something that had been alive. I asked her about vegetables and she said "Well those aren't alive stupid." There are plenty of good reason to be a vegetarian, that isn't one of them.

I love a good broccoli cheese soup. The cheese completely negates the healthy qualities of the broccoli.

It is possible to like the taste of meat while objecting to how it is obtained. If the flavor and texture can be closely replicated using plant products then there would be no objection to eating the look-alike.

Not that I am a vegetarian. I just don't see a particular issue with them objecting to killing animals for their food but are willing to eat a plant substitute.

Cold with ranch is the preferred method. But if it is cooked then it shouldn't be overcooked. They should never be mushy.

The problem, and why I tend to avoid them, is the after-effects.

That would actually be super cool and appreciated. I feel like I'm heading in a similar direction. lol

Speaking of doing goofy things for "healthy" reasons, no one can touch Ruby Tuesday. Along with all of the high calorie items in appetizers and other things they offer this crazyness. "I'll have the four way sampler, followed by the Asiago Peppercorn Sirloin, and I'm watching my weight so I guess I'll have the
Creamy Mashed Cauliflower
with that."

Really? You must have created it as a joke.

I've never actually tried Creamy Mashed Cauliflower. "Wait... are you serious?" element aside, is it good? lol

The first recipe my son learned,
Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas

He learned it age five.

Sounds good enough by me. Don't know that I've ever had a proper one, though.

Then again, there's always money in the banana stand.

Fried Breaded Mozzarella Sticks
Which do you prefer, Ranch Sauce or Marinara Sauce with 'em?
