Music..

Why dislike Blink? Just listen to the lyrics. they have some excellent rhyme and rhythm. Adam's Song, for one, holds a very nice message to it: don't kill yourself.
U2 I believe is a Christian. His music is not necessarily Christian or not, but it can be viewed that way, just like Creed.
Sum41 is great, and Green Day is so different it's awesome. Sublime as well is their own thing. It's not alternative, it's Sublime. The Foo Fighters, is just cool. Nirvana has a very catchy beat to them.
Real punk...like Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols? That kinda punk? Ramones is great. Clash is cool. Sex Pistols....weird.

I try to keep simple and practical approaches to all issues. I have no scriptural backing for doing so. It just made sense too. Jesus was always preaching to the dumb and poor and they seemed to understand Him. And if they were understanding Him, then it seemed that Christianity was meant to be simple, without a lot of deep debate.

With that, my thoughts on music:

Ignoring all music simply because it does not have a Christian label on it, is frankly ignorant. If that is true, then ignore all classical music as well, they weren't all Christian.

When I go to buy a CD of a band I simply ask myself one question, "do I support this band"? If I agree with their message, then I buy their music because buying their CDs gives them money and encourages bands to keep doing what they are doing. Listening to a secular song on the radio is really not that big of a deal. If I am checking the radio stations and I come across some old Van Halen or Eagles song, I keep it there. But I don't buy their music because I don't know enough about the band to support them.

I used to be 90% secular music, but one day God really convicted me about it and so I went 100% Christian music for a year. Then I felt released from that and have stayed 95% Christian music since, keeping the whole "support" philosophy.

But just because God personally convicted me, doesn't mean that everyone should do the same. Each person has different struggles that hold them back from all that God has for them. Secular music was probably holding me back from what God had for me, so that is why it happened. It doesn't mean the same for everyone else.

<thinking...> I should probably get to my point.

The point is, I don't believe certain music is necessary right or wrong to listen too. Instead it is based on personal conviction and if you may be a bad influence on someone who does struggle with that issue.

That's...interesting takes on music, Marko.
If I listen to music I like, I listen. Christian music is not something I like. Even trance, and "rock", and wanna-be Jesus Rock, and whatever else they got to toss. Poor vocals in pop. Crap like that.
There is one band I really like, known as Pillar...very good stuff, that. They're Christian and I enjoy their music.
Now, let's take rock. The image most parents get when they hear the word rock is people like KISS or Metallica or Van Halen and AC/DC...what they grew up with. So perhaps they don't like the idea of rock. And some rock is crap to listen to....especially stuff like death metal (i.e. Cannibal Corpse, Cradle of Filth, Marilyn Manson).
I'm scared of death metal artists, and nu metal artists (i.e. Mudvayne) suck bad.
Classic rock, heavy metal, hard rock, is the way to go. Metallica rocks!
I also have a taste for the classical, Ludwig and the like, with some peppering of oldies in there. However, modern rock is my bag.

of course the other option is to only use music in your devotional times and for praise and worship.

I'm not fond of most music as I've said before, actually I think it was in this thread...

but oh well the point is, that music is very important to God, and when we do our devotions, we should also do some praise and worship songs. The Salvation Army sells their SongBook in a nice Leather-Bound edition (looks like one of those ultrathin Bibles, and some editions even come with the New Testament and Psalms) it has hundreds of songs plus bunches of praise choruses listed within it. You should be able to get one through your local Corps (I'm not sure if they sell through the internet). It's something really nice to have with you while doing your devotions cos you can just open it up to a song and sing for God.

I'm rambling again aren't I...

Philmore and Dogwood are Christian bands I highly recommend. Insyderz is another good ska Christian band. And I'm picky when it comes to Christian music. Some of the stuff they play on the radio is... bad in terms of musical talent (as one friend puts it, those bands can only play one string at a time, totally commercialized.)

As I said, I like punk bands that stay with the punk ethic. None of the "I broke up, I skateboard" stuff, but the "Screw the gov, we want peace, we want social equality" ethic of the 80s. Hence, my dislike of Blink.

Blink182 would be to the 90s era of children...not really having probs against the government, I s'pose.
My friend wrote a song blaming a lot of poor stuff on the government...pretty good.
But, while Rage Against the Machine wasn't punk, that's about the best anarchy music I can sit down and enjoy, cause they rock so bad!
"So raise your fists and march around, don't dare take what you need! I'll jail and bury those committed, and smother the rest in greed!" What a kickup to listen to!
Also Foo Fighters...one of my faves is There Goes My Hero. Awesome song. Very inspiring to me. I love David Grohl's vocals, and his killer drumming skills.
Liam Lynch is...stupid, but hilarious. They're not well-known, I suppose, but I heard them on my friend's comp. SO funny. "Electric Vomit" was the song I heard. It was good. It was so stupid, I had to laugh. "I was a pidgeon, I had a vision." Check them out if you want a laugh.

Music definietely influences people, but the degree in which it does is left up to the person. I personally don't pay attention to the lyrics since most of them I know I don't agree with and I'm horrible at memorizing lyrics. I pay more attention to the actual music, rather than the lyrics. The main problem I see with modern music (pop culture music that is) is the lack of expression with notes. All this self-expression with lyrics, and they leave out being able to put those emotions into tunes, melodies. Classical music is the best example of this, and it's surprising to see how much music has really degraded over time in my opinion.

But I do enjoy a whole lot of classical rock like Lynard Skynard (probably the only classical rock band I enjoy, well and Eric Clapton but I dunno if he fits into this category), and I love Metallica. S&M is the best album ever. The thing I like about Metallica is that they definetely got the music part down, unlike most bands which end up strumming the same 5 powerchords over and over. Which is an another reason why I don't like punk. And especially the so-called Christian punk bands.

Of course music is extremely subjective, especially now where there are tons of different styles and claiming one to be superior to another is almost absurd. As Christians we are called to be different, and as soon as we start thinking like the world (believing the negatives things in lyrics for example) it becomes a problem. But at the same time I don't see a problem with enjoying music secular or otherwise. It's God's gift of creativity to humanity and I think we should be able to enjoy it in all forms. Oh and I love ApologetiX.

Oh and Tourniquet's pretty awesome if you're into metal and stuff. The drummer is just insanely good.

Hey guys,

Music is such an important part in my life but not just any music, I like God's music. When I was a Freshman in Highschool, I had a friend that got saved he excepted Jesus as his personal Savior. One of the his first acts as a Christian was to destroy $1500 worth of secular cd's, I knew then that he was going to follow the Lord for the rest of his life and to this day he is still on fire for God, he is actually a youth pastor now. When I was in Germany 2 years ago with the Military I had another friend who got saved and he did the same thing
only he had about $2000 worth of cd's and I even helped
smash them it was fun! All three of us now listen exclusively to Christian music and we will never go back.
Whatever you decide to do you can't go wrong with listening to music that pleases God. I am sure He would agree with me.

I am a guy but I am a fan of Rebecca St. James, her new song called "Wait for me" is awesome. It's about.... well I'll let you listen to it and you can figure it out. Talk to you guys later.

P.S. May I recommend the cd's WOW 1997-2002, it's awesome!

The problem I have with most CCM is that well...they're horrible. Seriously, they're usually ripoffs of their "secular counterparts", and only once in a blue moon there is a really good Christian album. Of course one should listen to music that pleases God, but I'm not going to listen to some second rate Christian band just because they're "Christian". One should give the best, and only the best to God, and I think there needs to be a higher standard in the CCM industry.

I listen to music that I enjoy, that are examples of creativity that God has given to humans. Because I find it pretty hard to listen to alot of secular music w/o having it displease God, I mainly listen to classical, or purely instrumental music.

For some people music is a very big part of their lives, and it influences them greatly, and if destroying secular CDs that they once had probably helps a great deal, so be it. If CCM helps one live the Christian life, then so be it, but music is very subjective, and differs from each person. It should be an honest decision each person should make, whether the "bad music" they listen to are influencing them or others around them, and take action accordingly.

And does destroying that music really make a difference to everything?

Ideas... There's nothing more dangerous to a fundamentalist mind than an extreme idea, expressed openly and in the language of the common man.

Chevalle (sp?) is an awesome band. They sound like Tool, but their message is better.

Yep, Chevelle's one of my favorites, and another one I discovered recently is Disciple. Different kind of metal, but still good :-). Tourniquet is excellent, the lyrics are brilliant and throw forward a strong, unignorable message.

I'm into mostly punk and emo....and not the pop crap that has been mentioned, like Blink and Sum41 =\

I used to be into the heavy stuff but when I became a Christian the cursing just stopped doing it for me, and it makes it all revolting to me...no longer my style...

Ummm......Blink and Sum are just kinda punk...Avril and the like are pop.

METALLICA! "I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY! GIMME FUEL GIMME FIRE GIMME THAT WHICH I DESIRE!"

AC/DC! "I'm TNT, I'm dynamite! TNT, I will not fight!"
"So lock up your daughter, lock up your wife, lock the back door, run for your life!"

Chevelle is okay...they're just too freaking slow.
TOOL is so awesome....but they are so sinful and wicked. Undertow? Eulogy? Their entire Aenima CD, basically, was terrible. "Schism", "Lateralus", "Parabola" and others, though, are fairly good, in that they don't swear, and their message is not anti-God.

Nononono, Ultima, there's different sub-genres of music. Blink and Sum41 are pop-punk..and example of hardcore punk would be Luckystar...pure old-school punk would be like River City Rebels..then theres post-pop punk, emo, emoish-punk, etc...

its all about the underground music, my freind =D

*edit----> forgot to mention indy..indy punk, indy emo....the list goes on an on...and i assure you, blink182 and sum41 are most definitly pop, and i put them right in there with avril..gg, blink

That hurts.
What happens to classics like Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), Psycho Therapy, Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones), Turn the Page (Bob Seger), She Shook Me All Night Long, She's Got the Jack, TNT (AC/DC), Of Wolf and Man, The God That Failed, For Whom the Bell Tolls, King Nothing (Metallica) and so many classics? Tossed aside for this NEW stuff....

Jesus: What are you listening to?
Chritsian: AC/DC she shook me all night long
Jesus:Why?
Christian:It's classic!
Jesus: What is it about and where do I fit in?
Christian: umm sex and you created it!
Jesus: I see....

hehe I tend to listen to lyrics and if they are glorifying sex drugs and rock n roll I don't fill my head with that nonsense. That's me though, you may be wired differently

I don't fill my head with it, but some songs are just great.
Take Metallica. SOME songs are bad, some songs don't really glorify God (not many do...), but they're dang good songs.
There is such a thing as a gray area, where evil nor God are glorified...they're just songs.

I don't listen to many songs, because I find them terrible, and not good for my relationship with God, like Suicide Note Part 1 by Pantera, or Suite-Pee by System of a Down, or Sugar, even, by the same band, though I do so like that song, or Sex Magic by Red Hot Chili Peppers and other atrocities they sing, but they have some pretty decent stuff.
One song doesn't ruin the band.
