    Linux distro suggestion

Actually, I changed my port from 22 (I never allow remote root login) and saw it drop to zero for several weeks. They may find the new port eventually, but the port scanners seem to be looking for port 22 when looking for SSH servers.

    Linux distro suggestion

Yeah, I get 1000+ break-in attempts on the SSH side of my Mandriva 2007 honeypot... It's easy to fix that by changing ports, but I'm watching the usernames they try with, and the IP addresses that are being used.... Been running this honeypot for about 3 years, no successful break-ins so far...

    Linux distro suggestion

CentOS is nice, but I find myself updating for the added features of a new release long before I've got time to worry about much else. But I'm not looking for the 600+ days of uptime that a lot of server admins love so much; I've seen a few still running old versions of RedHat and boasting...

    Linux distro suggestion

Even newer P4 systems can be fairly easy to come by, as some businesses throw out hardware more than 3 years old. I've got 2 P3 systems laying around that I have yet to do anything with, and they will run a LOT of game server software (higher end is out of the question for the 550). But look...

How many are playing lotr and plan to most likely play after release?

I haven't seen much lag since the public beta came out; DDO is actually suffering from lag lately, but only since they released their latest (free) module. They actually seem to have the bugs worked out of LOTRO, and I could never get into WoW myself. So I'll give it a try, at least. And as...

Looking for D&D Stormreach/Lord of the Rings Online Guild

Yeah, the "free" MMORPGs like Silkroad are as annoying, but that's because you can't be banned for flaming the open chat areas, or if you do, you just start a new character and start all over again. The only alternative in some games is to start your own server (ala America's Army), but that...

How many are playing lotr and plan to most likely play after release?

Sounds like fun to me; LOTRO hopefully will attract some mature players. I've been playing the Beta, and it's been better in some ways than D&D Online.

Looking for D&D Stormreach/Lord of the Rings Online Guild

Sounds good. I only tried WoW, couldn't stand the fact people tried to duel me the moment I started... PvP is not why I play MMORPGs as a rule.

Just for the record, {CS} aka Christian Soldiers, is now http://www.christiandsoldiersgaming.org although the old domain does still point to the new one. -{CS}Cw3.IAmBait-][-(Tos)

Something to Ponder -- Mac OS

If you're looking for a desktop Linux OS, OpenSuse or Mandriva come to mind as having excellent overall hardware support and being fairly easy to install and run. I actually like OSX because, as a computer technician, the near-indestructible BSD UNIX core leaves me to fix hardware problems. I...

    New Monitor

I used to be CRT-only. In fact, where I work, so many 19" flat-screen (not flat panel) CRTs are being thrown away I've got my pick. But I just went to an Envision 22" CRT, and with the energy it saves, as well as the widescreen viewing of DVDs and TV shows, it's awesome. LCD used to be junk...

It's all come down to this...

Yeah, since I'm also in Iowa it's either bow or shotgun (only rifle you can really use is a .22, and that's not much fun :P ). And I could see using a flashbang on a coyote, if you could get close enough... I don't think using one on a deer would work very well; dropping flashbangs from trees...

Looking for D&D Stormreach/Lord of the Rings Online Guild

I'm looking for a Guild playing D&D Online aka Stormreach and/or Lord of the Rings Online. I'm beta testing LOTRO and have had an account on DDO for a while, but am trying to find good reason to keep the accounts going. I've got one {CS} member interested in LOTRO, but I've found the DDO...
