The Paranormal

Quote[/b] ]Isaiah 14:9
The grave below stirs up to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed to greet you, all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones, all those who were kings over the nations

Quote[/b] ]Luke 16:27
He answered, then I beg you, send Lazarus – (deceased) to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham replied, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.  No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. Abraham said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the sleep of the dead.

For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.

1 Samuel 28:8
Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to a woman. "Consult a spirit for me," he said, "and bring up for me the one I name."
But the woman said to him, "Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and wizards from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?"
Saul swore to her by the LORD , "As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this."
Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?"
"Bring up Samuel," he said.
When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!"
The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. What do you see?"
The woman said, "I see a ghost coming up out of the ground."
"What does he look like?" he asked.
"An old man wearing a robe is coming up," she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.
Samuel (the ghost) said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"
"I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do."
Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? The LORD has done what he predicted through me.

Then of course, Jesus referred to them.

Quote[/b] ]Luke 24: 36-43
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
They were startled and frightened, thinking they had seen a ghost.

He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have."

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.

This is the definition of the word ghost.

[b said:
Quote[/b] ]The spirit of a dead person, especially one believed to appear in bodily likeness to living persons or to haunt former habitats.
The center of spiritual life; the soul.
A demon or spirit.
A returning or haunting memory or image.

A slight or faint trace: just a ghost of a smile.
The tiniest bit: not a ghost of a chance.
A faint, false image, as:
A secondary image on a television or radar screen caused by reflected waves.
A displaced image in a photograph caused by the optical system of the camera.
A false spectral line caused by imperfections in the diffraction grating.
A displaced image in a mirror caused by reflection from the front of the glass.
Informal. A ghostwriter.

A nonexistent publication listed in bibliographies.
A fictitious employee or business.
Physiology. A red blood cell having no hemoglobin.

As you can clearly see, the spirits of the dead are ghosts.

I don't think anyone cares.

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. I John 4:4 Okay, guess I won't be afraid to ask...
Kidan, in the verses you mentioned, KJV says Hell from beneath is moved for thee... was this not a special happenstance prepared for Lucifer? Again, in Proverbs it is intrepreted as unto the dead. Why the difference? Also, I have wondered if:

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8

...and if there is a great gulf fixed as described in Luke, who are these spirits? Are these the angels that fell with Lucifer?

according to Jewish tradition, after death, the saints will go to Abraham's bosom to await the final days, the coming of the Messiah and His final kingdom.  This is what the verses are discussing in Luke.  Post-Christ, the after-life works slightly different.  Now, we sleep until the next coming.  Why the change?  Who knows, it's not explained.  But this clearly shows that existance continues after death, but do note that it's only the saints that are allowed to travel back and forth in this state.  those who did not follow the Law, were locked in Sheol.  Of course, this did not make them the unclean spirits which routinely possessed people.

The verse in Proverbs.  This is actually an admonition against adultery.  The writer is telling the young man to stay away from the adultress. Basically, the writer is saying, stay away from her, because it leads to death, rather than life. I included it here because it makes special mention of the 'spirits of the dead'

The Isaiah verses speak of the fall of the king of Babylon.  Whether this is the actual king or the spiritual king is not exactly clear.  It seems to apply to both, and most theologians apply the scriptures to Satan.
anyways, the important part is that at his death, this king of Babylon, those already in the grave await him, and are there to see his arrival in the afterlife.

It takes a lot to convince me of authentic sightings of ghosts and such like, but I do believe.

I am interested what Christians think of paranormal activity in the living- flameproof people, magnetism, poltergeist activity etc.

Did you know there was this doctor who claimed he was possessed by the spirit of a dead doctor when he performed operations. He never used anaesthetic, never sterilised his equipment, yet people recovered from their operations much faster, did not feel pain and never became infected. He (apparently) even gave the patients bits he cut out to hold and look at.

Edit: I'll give the name later, when I get home. It's in a book somewhere.

That isn't the faith healing crap is it? Where the "doctor" palms a small baggie w/ blood & guts in it, then puts his hands on the "patient's" stomach, bursts the bag and pretends to stick his hands inside. That's some big time baloney!

No the one I think he is refering to is a South american doctor who """puts himself ointo a trance, the spirit of a WWII german Octor posess hima nd he does SX w/o and drugs and these people let him do intricate SX on them with no pain. Saw a thing on TLC

I think Montrez hit it on the head.

Brazilian surgeon Jose Arigo (who performed most of his operations between 1950-1971) said his body was taken over by a long-dead German doctor. He never sterilised his instruments and his patients never felt pain and were fully awake and not under anaesthetic.

From what I have read, the guy actually cut people open and performed operations, not eh lay-the-hands-on kind of healing.

I'm skeptical, but I was hoping for a response of is this good/bad, since I was under the impression this kind of paranormal activity was prohibited, or at least frowned upon by Christianity.

Not arguing that it doesn't happen. I simply don't partake of it. I don't go out of my way to become involved in it. I don't do seances, or ouigi boards or any other form of divination. I don't allow myself to become "possessed" I choose to take a very personal stand against those types of forces in my life.

Hoping not to pry too much, do you dislike this stuff for it's religious implications or is it something else?

Personally, I distrust clairvoyants and ouija (Spelling?) boards, simply because I doubt their authenticity.

Sorry if I'm prying.
