Star Wars: The Old Republic

So today was the big reveal for the big big project from LucasArts and BioWare:

Star Wars: The Old Republic.

My patience for finding tidbits of good information and pasting the proper quote tags, sources, credits etc is waning tonight, so I'll just stick with the basic info and some links.

  • Events occur something like three centuries after KOTOR 2
  • It will have a story, and will encompass "KOTOR 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and 12"...whatever that means.
  • "You can play as the good guy in the bad place trying to do good things or the bad guy in the good place trying to do bad things,"
  • It's scheduled for a PC release only as of yet...BOO

I find myself sorely disappointed that they took this route with this series, and I honestly think it's doomed to fail, especially if no console version (which would be awful unless some sort of cross-platform agreement was worked out....I know...yeah, right). I just...don't....know. I'm not sure really how all this is going to work as far as gameplay and storytelling, but I'm setting the bar very low. I really don't like playing games online all that much, and if I were to have to (1) play online and were required to play with other people who I probably don't know to get anywhere or (2) pay monthly fees for more of the KOTOR universe's story (shut it, I loved 2, it was great :D) I might cry. Really. I'm almost there now.

Kotaku - Star Wars: The Old Republic Revealed As Ambitious MMO

I don't read any other game blogs or news sites than Kotaku usually so that's all I've got for now.

I usually avoid mixed releases (console + PC) as they tend to dumb things down badly for the console. It only goes downhill (or rather off a cliff) when studios try to release for a three consoles, as the Wii is rather stunted in the graphics and processing area.

The original KOTOR was a limited exclusive to Xbox, and not dumbed down at all. IMO it was probably better than the PC version.

I'm excited for another KOTOR. Loved the series and the game. I guess this means that they dropped the KOTOR MMO idea they had, or is this it? You didn't say anything about online play. And from what I remembered, you couldn't play online with KOTOR I and II. So unless this is an MMO like thing, I don't see it even having an option to play online.

I think you know more things than you told us. Nothing is wrong about that, you are the "expert" as of right now, and you are tired, so its to be understood. But LucasArts and BioWare did a good job IMO with KOTOR II. KOTOR I was slightly superior to KOTOR II, but that was with Obsidian something or rather right? So I'm confused as to why you give it such a low bar? From what I understand its basically KOTOR III. and even if KOTOR III is worse that I and II, they were such good games, that KOTOR III is probably still going to be worth playing.

I don't have time to check out the links right now.. really.. I don't have time to be writing this.. but I will look at them sometime tomorrow.

AHH HA!!!

Well, then disregard everything I said. ;) As of right now, the only way I see me getting it depends on the release date and if it doesn't have a monthly fee.

EA isn't talking release dates yet. In fact, they're completely ignoring all questions about release dates AND business model.

This is amazing! A MMO designed by Lucas and Bioware with the money of EA! This is gonna rock and I will be playing from release no doubt! The comment about encompassing KOTOR 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and 12 is in regards to how massive the content planned will be. They want to set records with the most massive amt of content at release ever.

I wonder if this is the reason BioWare has been trying to recruit additional Writers. If so, I may take a second look at applying for the position.

I've retired from MMOs, so the news is irrelevant to me, but I like BioWare and I wish them success. From what I've read about KotOR, this could be an awesome game.

I agree that MMOs belong on PCs. World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online have been very successful and are available only on the PC. Trying to build a network infrastructure that allows PC and console players together must be a nightmare. I'm not sure how Square was able to pull it off with Final Fantasy Online (I refuse to call it XI), but it must have been very difficult.

Hopefully it will come out before GW2 or a reasonable time after GW2. I really only have time for one MMO. But I am very excited for another KOTOR, MMO or not. BioWare and LucasArts are very talented and I expect a lot from them.

While you may not believe it, bioware is overhyped. They make only half of a game and leave the rest to the player to complete through mods that they find desirable. This has happened to jade empire (which needed expansion) as well as Mass Effect.

Some might say both of these games are exceptional, but in all honesty anyone with an objective opinion knows what I mean.

I thought Jade Empire was a fantastic game. I haven't played Mass Effect, so I can't speak on that subject. I'm by no means a Bioware fan, I just liked the games of theirs I have played. I'm glad to see they're doing KOTOR again, though I thought Obsidian did just fine.

I'm not really sure how Jade Empire needed to be completed through mods as I played it on Xbox (as far as expansion I don't really know. I thought it was fine but whatever).

Did you play the PC versions? Because the reviews I read for Jade Empire on PC said it was nowhere near as enjoyable as its console counterpart.

My PC can't support it unfortunately. But the PC versions, I dunno. They just weren't as enjoyable because modding sometimes feels like your tipping the scales of the game in you're favor. Like your cheating in a legit way. You might ask what I mean, well try out the dozens of morrowind or kotor mods that add uber weapons and mods and you'll see what I mean.

It's like this, after you beat the city in jade empire, the rest of the game feels so short.

ANOTHER KOTOR??

AND IT'S AN MMO???

:D

EDIT: Hmm, I dunno.

It's like,

"THE MOST POWERFUL SITH WAR IN HISTORY HAS EMERGED" blah blah blah, forgive my extravagant use of all-caps, but... come on. It's like, "The Sith have another empire!! And this time it's bigger than the other time which was the Sith Empire but this one is different and it's bigger, plus with more plot twists so we can still market it MUAHAHAHA it's good to be Lucasarts"

EDIT2: Haha, PC only! This is my secret revenge for the people who are able to play The Force Unleashed because my main gaming platform is my PC and I don't own an Xbox360 or a PS3 (the only systems worth playing it on)!

That's also one thing star wars people always have to deal with. No originality, no decent hero who doesn't whine, NOTHING! What do we get? A cry baby hero destined for greatness, and a boring villain who thinks their the best thing since sliced bread. I can't say star trek is any better, well... Maybe a tiny bit!

That's why the Warhammer 40k universe is so awesome.

Anyway. I'll look forward to seeing how it all turns out and wish Bioware the best.

It is the same flaws in the character that leads to strong emotional battles.

The biggest flaw IMO of star wars is that they try to shove what should be 20 hours of story into a 2 hour movie. You get the general gist of what is going on but you don't _understand_ it. So most audiences will get 2 hours of nifty graphics and people screaming at each other over nothing. Of course that is the norm for most Hollywood trash being spewed out.

Well here's my theory about it, the reason that there is so many problems in the star wars universe is because the Jedi are all closed minded. They taught their students to avoid the darkside, instead of teaching them how to deal with their emotions. Seriously folks, would it have KILLED the jedi to read a few self help books?!

And as a result, the jedi don't know how to deal with something bad when it happens to them. They are in a way sheltered, and as a result the darkside gets them and consumes them. Maybe if certain sith knew how to deal with their problems effectively, they wouldn't have needed to replace their hands.

The sith aren't any better, they are too ego driven for their own good. As a result, they think that they are better instead of thinking "Can this person defeat me? Are they powerful enough?"

Anikin was brought up differently. He was basically a prodigy who was rewarded despite the fact that he did not follow the order purely (due to desperate times). Besides a few jedi who turned, most of them were in perfect control.

The jedi were basically locked into not appearing too controlling and ultimately lead to palatine being able to sway the republic into a dictatorship. Basically they took the purge with their hands tied behind their backs. The emperor was controlling the conflict the entire time and for the most part got what he wanted.

The problem with Star Wars--you know, aside from Episodes I-III --is that it's becoming increasingly hard to think of something that hasn't been used 16 times already.
