Star Wars: The Old Republic Goes F2P on Nov 15.

Hey,

Just in case anyone hasn't kept an eye on the SWTOR forums, SWTOR is going free to play on Nov 15. Those who play for free will get two character slots per server and a lot of the little bells and whistles will not be available (like titles and extra quick bars and flashpoints). Those will be unlockable by using Cartel Coins which you can purchase or by subscribing to the game. There are also a bunch of other goodies you can get with the Cartel Coins. There is a thread discussing it in the SWTOR forums.

I was thinking about getting back into this game once it went free to play. I already have a 50 from playing it on release and was wondering if there are free server transfers. If there are, which one do you play on Kahiel?

We just reformed the Pub guild on The Bergeren Colony. We have a guild on The Bastion, but I haven't seen anyone on line in a long time. I have a toon on The Harbenger as well with Aleron.

If you didn't transfer your characters, I think you will find that they were transferred for you. They have locked out the low population servers.

I'll probably give it a spin. But these types of games often don't hold my interest for too long.

The server you ended up on was based on which one you started on.

If you had a subscription, you will be awarded bonus cartel coins based on when and how long you had it. From launch to the end of July you get 150 coins per month, August on you get 200 (if you subscribe now, you get 500/per month).

The Republic guild is getting more active. Come join us if you'd like to check out the game. We can help you get leveled up.

Do you have to resub to get the bonus coins? In not seeing any in game however I see them in my account on the web.

Why do I have to have active game time to claim my Complimentary Cartel Coins?

The Complimentary Cartel Coins that are currently visible in your Cartel Coin Ledger are a reward for being an active subscriber with Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. As such, the rewards will only be granted to active subscribers when the Free-to-Play option becomes available. Please note that as long as your account still has active Game Time when the Free-to-Play option becomes available, we will consider you a subscriber and you will be granted Complimentary Cartel Coins accordingly.

Is it possible to join a guild using a free-to-play account?

I know it wasn't possible with the WoW "unlimited trial" and that's why I never bothered creating one. No guild, no play.

Yes. Just can't be a guild leader unless it's a free-to-play guild.

Yes, but...
Do I need to be a subscriber to receive my Complimentary Cartel Coins when the Free-to-Play option becomes available?

Yes, the Complimentary Cartel Coins that are visible in the Cartel Coin Ledger now will be granted to you when the Free-to-Play option becomes available as long as you have active game time on your account
or return as an active Subscriber by December 20, 2012 (11:59PM CDT). This Game Time could be from a recurring subscription, a Game Time Card, or part of the 30 days of Game Time that comes with the purchase of Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.
If you do not have active Game Time on your account on the day that the Free-to-Play option becomes available, you will not necessarily lose access to these Cartel Coins. You will still be able earn your Complimentary Cartel Coins by renewing your subscription or adding a Game Time Code on or before December 20, 2012 at 11:59PM CDT. Once you have done this, your Complimentary Cartel Coins will become available to you in-game.
So you have some time to get the coins. It may be worth doing a one month sub or getting a time card in order to get the coins. I've used my coins for things like getting Rank 3 speeder skill at level 35. There are some cool things on the cartel market. Populations have been awesome so my stuff sells pretty well on the broker and it's been easy to group.

Yeah no way I am giving them $15 for some cash shop credits. Too many other f2p or b2p games out there right now with better deals.

Negativity aside, it's good that there are so many other games available so you can play what you like. Speaking for myself, I enjoy SWTOR and am just passing along some info. The game is growing again. It looks like the Cartel Coin feature is a success. I'm a cheapskate, but I bought 5500 coins last month for in-game goodies. It's the best value and will last me a few months. Populations are growing. There are so many people on various planets that I have to look for a second instance of the planet so I can get my quests done. Kahiel ran into a queue on The Harbinger the other day, even as a subscriber. Looking at the SWTOR forums, it seems more people are resubbing after being away a few months (or since launch). It's mostly a good quality of people, at least on Begeren Colony.

Well that is good to hear and bad to hear, I was hoping it would die personally, so the idiots in charge of this horrible f2p model would catch on how insulting it is to gamers. Not that I would want fun taken away from fellow gamers like yourself, but this was the final straw for EA and my wallet. I think paying cash to hide my headslot will be a running joke of the industry for years to come.

The head slot issue doesn't seem to be a big deal. I found only two complaints about it on the SWTOR forums, with the latest being on November 16 and it received zero replies. Most of the head slot questions revolve around the location of the hide feature because it changed when 1.6 came out. It costs the equivalent of $5.63 (if you buy the value pack of coins) to unlock it for your entire account. I haven't seen any QQ about it in game.

Many of the comments I've seen in the SWTOR forums have been positive regarding the F2P features. And while I agree that it's silly to have to pay to hide the slot, the quality of the player base seems to have greatly improved. I don't know if it was intentional on EA/Bioware's part, or an unintended benefit, but the aspect of paying for certain things that gamers take for granted in other games has kept out the folks that tend to nitpick and complain about the smallest things. It's been very enjoyable to play over the past couple of months that I've been active again.
