Party like it's 1999

With the future release of Warcraft III as an "RPS" (role-playing strategy), Starcraft will theoretically be Blizzard's final RTS. For more information on Warcraft III and the RPS system, visit www.infoceptor.com.

Since Warcraft III will use a different game engine and basic design, it will not "replace" Starcraft, but rather be a new game altogether. In the past, Blizzard's games have only been outdated by new games. Warcraft I was replaced by Warcraft II, and Warcraft II (though not for everyone) was replaced by Starcraft. With the advent of a new game type, Starcraft will not have any internal competition; that is, Blizzard will not likely produce another RTS.

Does this open the possibility of an "immortal RTS"? Could Starcraft not be outdated? With its 2D engine, it doesn't haggle with complex 3D video card drivers. It's strategy is still unfolding to many players. Brood War introduced new units and tremendous changes to multiplayer. Battle.net offers a free way to play against people from around the world (even if it is unstable and laggy). Could all these factors produce a unique gaming phenomenon?

Please post your thoughts in reply.

man tek u must mis the good old day
I admit I miss the nights when I could log onto Battle.net and find four or five other Christian gamers ready to play a match, but Tribe of Judah has come a long way in the last six years and the present should be appreciated as much, if not more, than the past.

I miss those days.

Just speaking about RTS's in general... I'm too new to TOJ to comment on what it was in the past, but... What happened to all the excitement for RTSs? I remember the craze for SC starting back in 97 and I was a freshman in college... Maybe all the genre needs is the next innovation to reawaken people's imaginations.

I lost it when i started playing RTSs online and all everybody did was mass produce unless your the zerg and thats what you supposed to do :(

Good question. The Starcraft community, especially the "elite," rejected Warcraft III as the "next big thing" and SC still rules in Korea. WC3 has excellent single-player campaigns, but the multiplayer component, when compared to Starcraft, is lacking.

Dawn of War, Kohan, Command & Conquer: Generals, and other RTS games gathered small fanbases, but nothing comparable to the hysteria and mad love that surrounded (surrounds?) Starcraft. I don't think anything can live up to Starcraft--not even Starcraft 2. Most of the developers who created Starcraft have left Blizzard.

The "next big thing" won't be an improvement on Starcraft; it will have to be the "next new thing" to make an impact as large as Starcraft made.

ya well isent sc gost like a fps?

A, 1st & 3rd Person Shooter, that keeps withdrawing its release date. My friend was hoping to get it this year, but I see its changed its release date again for next year, heh.

Nowadays, you log on Battle Net, you get Haxxxx3 asking you to hack a password. I think it's a bot. It whispers people, and it's been there for weeks now.
