With the future release of Warcraft III as an "RPS" (role-playing strategy), Starcraft will theoretically be Blizzard's final RTS. For more information on Warcraft III and the RPS system, visit

Since Warcraft III will use a different game engine and basic design, it will not "replace" Starcraft, but rather be a new game altogether. In the past, Blizzard's games have only been outdated by new games. Warcraft I was replaced by Warcraft II, and Warcraft II (though not for everyone) was replaced by Starcraft. With the advent of a new game type, Starcraft will not have any internal competition; that is, Blizzard will not likely produce another RTS.
Does this open the possibility of an "immortal RTS"? Could Starcraft not be outdated? With its 2D engine, it doesn't haggle with complex 3D video card drivers. It's strategy is still unfolding to many players. Brood War introduced new units and tremendous changes to multiplayer. Battle.net offers a free way to play against people from around the world (even if it is unstable and laggy). Could all these factors produce a unique gaming phenomenon?
