Last night we had a complaint from a guy (said he was going to email Elite) because an admin slayed him for "activating the swear filter." I'm not saying this admin was wrong in doing this, but if we are going follow this route, can we please atleast get the filter where it works right? you can't say earlier or other words that make no sense.

I do believe that we have to maintain a balance between properly admining our server and not going overboard due to this filter or other rules. It seems to me the more strict with rules we have become, the worse it has gotten. Maybe we should lighten up a bit?

Yeh if there is a txt file with the words in i can go through it and remove the useless ones....
 
I'll see if i can work up a list for Elite to make his life a little easier. Cause i do have admin mod on my comp so that i can show off my new cs maps when i finish one =P

But seriously the guy should be given at least 1 warning i dont' really care if he gets slap/slay/kick after that but come on mabye they didn't know about the swear filter on the server. So at least warn, please!

Well, the problem with the swear filter is that it actually parses thru the words and filters out anything contained within them. So, I've seen "earlier" filtered out to be "ear***" because someone doesn't know how to spell "liar" (I went ahead and changed it). Things like "attitude" show up as "at***ude".

This we cannot help, but I do admit that admins need to be more aware. Obviously, if they see something like '****', 9 out of 10 chances are that they are cursing.

I also added the word "d*mn". Does anyone else have any words that need to be taken out, or added?

Ok, I think it's actually "ream" that is what is causing it. Could be cream also. I think I saw it in the filter. I have no idea what it means...but I think it means to punish, or discipline. Not sure, tho. It's gone anyhow...
 
I was the admin that was on last nite, and that player HAD been slapped and slayed previously.

As I told him, I was being nice by slaying him a second time instead of kicking him.

and the reason for the slay was i saw "****"

not ear****. Without context surrounding the filtered words I punish for it.



as for ream and cream, they both have sexual connentations that are usually obscene.


as for extra words, I would prefer to have 'crap' removed, because imo it is a curse also, but I leave that up to you Elite.

its ream that is filitered.. i believe it is some sorta naughty act
 
I personally don't have a problem with crap, but I can understand Kidan's point of view. If anyone else has a problem with this, I will certainly add it to the filter. Let me know.

If I remember correctly that icky place for satan wasn't blocked either which I know isn't a bad word in proper context though I doubt the majority of people who are using it are having an appropriate discusion on the topic.

i personaly dont have a rpoblem wit the word "gosh" but sometimes when i say it ppl tell me not to like amen kidan etc. they say its pretty much like using the word "god" instead of "gosh" and i bielive them so i dont no if we should put that in there or not :-/
 
fart should be taken out. farther = ****her which could = something naughty her... but I said farther and it makes people think I swear a lot more than I do.
 
I saw a filter that blocked out the word saturday before. I dont like filters, theyre very easy to bypass and hinder normal speach. Filters will never replace admins until they filter out all chat.
 
people will tell you that replacing a word, such as gosh, dang, heck, whetever is cursing. If they want to go that route, more power to them, but to me that ain't cussing. This isn't worth the aggrivation to me. I agree with alot of the ToJ/CS charter, rules or whatever but we are just getting beyond petty with this stuff.

No, it was (broken - Thad posted again before I could post this...). There were some really funky words and stuff being filtered and blocked. I had some time before church tonight so I went ahead and made those changes that everyone suggested, except 'crap' and 'gosh'. I think it can be used instead of 'God'...but I can also see it being used innocently. If it gets to be a problem, I will add it to the filter.

Let me know if there are any suggestions. I want to accomodate everyone, but obviously that can't happen all the time.

The word "ugly" should be removed.  it can be thought of as being a cussword in a sentence.  If i was to state "Man that was ****"  where the "****" would be the word "ugly", but unknowing to the readers, it could easily come off as a cuss word.  
I think that a list of blocked out words should be posted on the website too (maybe not F*** or other obvious cusswords, but other words censored for connotations).  I have said "ugly" before on the server and it looks bad when someone with a ToJ tag makes a statement with "****" in it and then tells everyone else to not cuss whenever someone else makes a statement with "****".  Just a suggestion though.  A list of the filtered words could be a guideline and a warning for ToJers not to use these words (because who would guess that "ugly" or "fart" would be filtered).  And i believe whether they are unjustly filtered or not, that if they are filtered we as ToJers should try to avoid them as much as possible, atleast for the server company, to avoid a bad rap.
 
I know some people have a problem with "Gosh" Dang" stuff like that. I dont, I know they can be used as a substitute for other words, But I dont think of them that way, or else I wouldn't use them. I dont have a problem with "Crap" either, but I know some people do, I dont know if we should actually add them to filter or not. I mean, I'm willing not to say them (it's not like I'm addicted to the words or anything =\ I just think we gotta be carefull on what we say. And I agree us saying things like "Fart" and "Ugly" those coming out as "****" does look pretty bad.
 
I think the main thing is that we filter what is legitimatly profane. We should be happy people don't curse on our server, if they use substitutes for it, why is it still a big deal?
