It's that time of year again...HALLOWEEN!

You are so good to me!!! (((DV))) :p I am in the KJV court, so that is a good thing to me! You don't hold that against me! All joking aside, if there is hatred found there, that is not the sect of the KJV men I want to stand with. I don't see what the KJV fact has to do with the price of tea in China!

If you want to see why others feel that way, do a quick google for "chick tracs criticism".

So you only read the KJV Marcy?

Since you yourself have said you were once a Christian..does that mean you avhe to keep track of yourself too since you don't believe the same thing as the rest of the family?..<giggle>

Not exactly, no.

I excersize my right not to recognize it.

But I do like the fact that my favourite candy is very abundant and at a very cheap price too.

My favorite cand is cadburry eggs, which are not only unavailable the whole year, but very expensive...
Its tough bieng me :(

I understand why some people believe that Halloween is evil, but I don't see anything wrong with Trick or Treating. As long as your not actually celebrating its original purpose. I've gone ToT since I could walk adn won't stop until I'm out of High School.

Bonus candy for anyone who knows the original purpose that they are so vehmently not celebrating (whilst partaking in all the little rituals thereof).

Don't kid yourself - do some research on how folkorish rites work. By telling the stories and partaking with the kiddies and doing the dressing up, you are keeping the old ways alive.

I, for one, thank you.

i have issues with holloween based on what it stands for in my mind (i.e. cultish practices). however it depends on how things are presented as well. you can make holloween or christmas the most evil or most joyous occassion. i personally have always participated and worked with the Harvest Carnival that my church sets up, however in the last year and my plans this year are "trick or treating for the troops" which is for my SkillsUSA club care packages to the troops. we are trying to get enough donations to do 3 local national guard units and last year the ToT was freaking awesome. only me n 2 friends did it and we had enough for 2 units, this year we have like 6 groups doing it. so in other words, skillsUSA (non christian just to let u know) is turning an ugly holiday into a blessing for troops serving in iraq.

btw on the KJV note, i use to read NIV but then i read it so many times i got bored and decided KJV would be harder and i learn more from it now, but i prefer NIV anytime im explaining about christianity.

What about church "Harvest Festivals" held on October 31? Although we understand the rational and good intentions behind them, we don't think they are the best approach. Our family tends to agree with the author of an article called "Are 'Harvest Parties' for Christians?" (written by a self-avowed former witch and now active Christian). Harvest parties on October 31 tend to assume that "our children need something to take the place of Halloween, since they won't be participating in the secular and pagan celebrations. It suggests our kids are missing out on something. And indeed they are, if we allow them to spend Halloween in celebration." There are better things to do on Halloween than partying.

Which is the whole reason I will not celebrate Samhain.

I do know the meaning of the day (and did celebrate it for many years based on its original intent). Seems kinda strange to call it a holiday now.

So where is my candy? :)

Well I am too lazy to read this whole thread it doesn't interest me all that much, but I'll put my 2 cents in anyway. I apologize if someone has already said what I have to say.

The passage in the Bible that comes to mind for me when I think of this subject is 1 Corinthians 8:1-13. Look it up I'm not gonna type it for you :)

In a nutshell it's the passage about eating meat that has been sacrificed to idols. Basically it says that as long as we keep it in perspective, understanding that the false gods are not real and that there is only 1 God, it's OK to eat. I feel the same way about halloween.

Now having said that, we do not celebrate halloween in my family. Mainly because of 1 Corinthians 8:9.

"Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak."

To some halloween is more than just a goofy holiday. Or they may see it as such. I don't want my families celebrating a silly little holiday to be a stumbling block to anyone.

We always spend halloween at home together as a family. We play games and just enjoy eachothers company. No big lose, the kids enjoy that more than they would trick or treating anyway.

I'm considering actually competing in my office's costume contest for the express purpose of winning a comp day. If you can picture Mr. Incredible (and if you can't, look up at my avatar), I look almost exactly like him, belly and all. I would win easily.

After all, it would be a shame for God to give me a talent and for me not to use it, right?;)

That depends wether you use that talent for good...or awesome!

I didn't take the time to read through all five pages of posts so forgive me if someone else has already posted my view. I personally do not celebrate Halloween. My parents raised me to think of it as a anti-religious "holiday" of sorts. However, my wife who is a new Christian has always celebrated Halloween.

I do not feel that participating in Halloween-related activities such as trick-or-treating are evil. I won't ever allow my own kids to do so, but that is out of concern about the kind of weirdos out there these days. We'll probably go to the church's Harvest Party this year, like I used to go to myself as a kid.

Is commercialized Halloween evil? In short... no.

That's as bad as me saying that God made me an Atheist, so who are you to question him? :)

Please refer to my above quote regarding harvest fairs, I'd like your input.
