Is GW as fun as WoW?

I was thinking about getting this game since there are no monthly fees.
What's your rating out of 10?

I'd have to give it a 10. You just can't beat the no monthly fee. I've logged more hours in this game than any other game I've ever played. And I can keep playing it for as long as I want without paying another dime. The graphics and gameplay are top-notch and you'll not find a guild with more to offer than ours.

I don't know how it is compared to WoW because I've never played nor really wanted to play WoW. As long as Guild Wars is around, there's absolutely no need to pay a monthly fee for a game as far as I'm concerned.

I think GW is a great game. Its the only game I currently play and I love it. I give it a 9 (because there is always room for improvement)!

However, if you are coming from WoW (which I have never played, but I am very familiar with other MMORPGs) there are somethings you may want to consider regarding GW.

1. No monthly fee. You can just buy the additional stand alone chapters as they are released (tentatively every 6 months). There is no need to buy all the chapters, you can mix and match any. Currently there are two chapters, and one to be released this winter. Each chapter has a different theme and cost as must as a full game (as compared to an expansion pack).

2. GW is a CORPG (competive online RPG). Unlike WoW and most other MMORPGs, the game world, with the exception of towns and outposts, is instanced. What this means is, that the only places where there are hundreds of other players is in the towns, outposts, and cities. These "chat room" like areas are where you can trade and form your party. Once your party is formed, when you leave one of these areas your party gets its own instance of the area, so you don't have to compete with other players for mobs or drops (auto assigned to party members) and you don't have to wait in line to enter any areas. This can detract from the rp immersion factor, but imo is an infinately better system.

3. The level cap is 20. Items have little affect on how powerful you are, though they are still very useful. The focus just isn't on getting the super sword of omnipotent destructionz so you can pwn everything (however people do go after such items because they LOOK cooler, but they are not necessarily more powerful stat wise) . It's more on selecting your skills and using them effectively. You will reach the level cap half way through the game, if not sooner. But that doesn't mean that your characters will stop growing and that the difficulty level remains stagnate. They just get more powerful in different ways.

I hope you found this useful, I'm not trying to start a flame war about WoW vs. GW, I just wanted to inform you of some of the differences that most people don't expect since GW isn't a traditional MMORPG. And as astrod00d, our guild is great, and our alliance is growing!

EDIT: Spelling.

If your all about gaining lvls and pwning Lower level character out of no where and doing the same thing over and over again just to gain lvls and like walking aroud ALOT you will like WoW. If you hate monthly fees like a Skill based game where how good you are with your character like a FPS game and not worrying about doing things over and over just to gain another lvl. And not having to worry about another player coming from behind killing you and taking your loot Guild Wars is your game!

Guild Wars for what they offer 9.5 out of 10 I would give WoW for what they do and being a Whole different style a 9 out of 10. There are things WoW can learn from GW and things GW can learn from WoW.

I read that this game needs 2GB of HD space!
Thats crazy, but.....how do you see how much space you have left on your harddrive?

It probably does after you load all the zones. To find out how much hard drive space you have available just double-click on My Computer and then right-click on the hard drive icon and click on Properties. It should tell you how much hard drive space is free or available.

lol, I have 10 GB of free space. What do you mean by "A free trial"?
You mean like a demo?
It's a 14 day, 10 hour trial of the full game. All you have to do is download and install the client and enter the trial key.

wow.... is the greatest thing in all the world.....

I'll have that trial key you mentioned.
And I just don't see spending 15 bucks a month for a video game.

One other difference that was already sort've mentioned but not expressed:

WoW *feels* massive. If it looks like you can go somewhere, get up on a ledge, climb a hill, chances are you can actually do it. The WoW world *feels* like a real world, where things happen on certain schedules and times during the day, etc.

GW has "invisible walls". The paths aren't linear necessarily, but the paths *are* defined in the game, so you'll come up to "borders" of certain areas and can't cross into others, even though that hill certainly doesn't look that steep. And aside from the cities/outposts and in PvP matches, you don't bump into other players. This is a good and bad thing: good 'cuz of the afore mentioned "no waiting line" or "player sneaking up behind you to still your loot" but bad 'cuz (according to some people) this makes it a little less immersive.

---

Also, you never feel like you have to "catch up" and things take less time in GW than they do in WoW.

You never feel like you have to log on everyday, just to keep up with your guildmates or stay competitive with the other players in the game (or feel like you're getting your "money's worth"). Since you're not competing with everybody for loot or kills or whatever, and it's easy to find other players who are at the same level as you, there's not a pressure to "keep up".

Not a high level of "grinding" since there's a level cap and the missions are relatively balanced to increase the challenge as you increase in level. You will find yourself doing some "farming" from time to time in order to build up $$ and crafting materials to get the next level of armor for your class, but that doesn't happen to often, especially if you know in advance what materials you should be saving to get the next set.

And missions can be quick to longish, ranging from 10-30 mins to an hour, so you can play casually when time allows.

Traveling: in WoW, in keeping with the "massiveness", you actually have to spend real time traveling. In GW, once you've reached a city or outpost, you can instantly warp there at anytime. Saves you *a lot* of hassle.

---

So, I guess having said all that, GW is actually more like a "massive game" instead of a "massive world". Both WoW and GW have rich stories, histories and narrative, but the game mechanics differ. Many say GW "fixes" the MMORPG genre while others say it really shouldn't be called a MMORPG at all because it diverges a lot from the genre's defining elements.

Personally, I enjoy it because it's balanced, it doesn't eat up a lot of my time, it doesn't cost me anything beyond the initial price, and I can play it at my own pace and feel the need to login everyday. (Of course, the graphics/music/production values are fantastic as well, and the skill set/"character build" game mechanic scratches the old pleasure area of my brain where "Magic The Gathering" used to grasp on so tightly :) )

hmmm, ok I get it.....so its not like Morrowind but more like Knights of the Old Republic?
Ummm, neither of those games are good comparisons. Maybe you'll just have to give it a go and just see how you like it. I'll PM you a trial key later today.
