I got some computer parts as gifts!

Huzzah! I received several computer parts from turn_key, a Tribe of Judah member, in the mail today. Here's the list:

I'm hoping to pick up a power supply and DDR2 RAM on the cheap and maybe buy a case as well, if it's not much more expensive than a PSU by itself.

The hardware is significantly more powerful than my desktop running an AMD Athlon XP 2700+ and Radeon 9600. :)

Woohoo, thats awesome!

Makes me think I should pull down my computer boxes and see if there is anything useful for anyone. :)

Yay thank you Jesus and Toj'er! :)

That setup is pretty close to what I have Tek.

If you find you have an old power supply and DDR2 RAM, please let me know. :D

As a matter of fact... :)

These I know I have.

Memory:
OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2N800SR4GK

Power Supply:
HIPRO HP-D2537F3R 250W ATX12V Power Supply - Retail HP Hewlett Packard Genuine/Replacement P/N: 5188-2622 Desktop PC Power Supply - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817174031
(Looks like it might have come out of an HP.. Only 250W though, so may not be enough?

Let me know if you want either of those. They aren't doing me any good anymore :)

I can already hear Tek laughing maniacally and saying "it's alive, ALIVE!" as he puts Frankencompy together :) .

EDIT: 250w might be too low power wise though :(. I'll defer to other more computer inclined people though.

EDIT: Yeah unfortunately Newegg's calculator recommends 335w. Having read a few power supply horror stories before I got mine I would skimp on the power supply last of all parts.

He's right. "Moar power!!"

Gerbil is right on that you absolutely do not want to skimp on your PSU. It's not just about the wattage, either...though you definitely want to have enough and then some. A cheap (low quality) PSU will be much more likely to send power spikes and dirty electricity on to your precious, and is less efficient. Less efficient = uses more energy, puts out more heat.

I don't have the math handy to know if the extra electricity used will cost you more in the long run, but I'd definitely pay the extra $10-20 to get a quality power supply, like a Corsair or other reputable brand.

Yessir! I'll be more than happy to give that RAM a good home. :D

As for a power supply: I have a 400W PSU in my current desktop PC (that I use as a media center). I just didn't think it would have enough oomph to support the GTS 450. Seems like it should work fine.

Push comes to shove, I can back up my data, install the new mainboard, CPU, graphics card, and RAM and keep my 100GB and 200GB hard drives. Then it's just a matter of installing Windows 7 (I still have an unused license from the 3-pack I bought for $150) and all my programs.

Just call me Dr. Frank (but without the emotional baggage or psychological torment that Victor Frankenstein endured). :)

SOOoooooooooooo are you thinking his power level should be over something Kendrik? Prod, nudge...

It... it... it... it should.... IT SHOULD BE OVER 9000!!!

There I said it.... Someone had to... I couldn't trust Kendrik to have enough emotional strength to do it right after trying to suppress it...

So I completely forgot that I need thermal grease and a heat sink for the processor. :( Going to call some local computer shops and see how outrageous the markup is...

Okay, so I'm thinking EVERCOOL sidewinder STC-01 Cooling Grease or Arctic Silver AA-1.75G Thermal Compound for thermal grease and Rosewill RCX-Z775-LP 80mm Sleeve Low Profile CPU Cooler or SilenX EFZ-92HA2 92mm 3rd generation fluid dynamic bearing Effizio CPU Cooler for a heatsink.

Thoughts?

(I guess I should check to see if either heatsink would actually fit on the mainboard first, eh?)

Also, I ran the Thermaltake Power Supply Calculator and it recommended 331W minimum, so I should be good with a 400W power supply.
