I got some computer parts as gifts!

Someone should make a poll about Tek and his computer issues. Oh wait....

Got an e-mail from ASUS today stating my mainboard had shipped.

I'm guessing there was a communication breakdown between the supervisor who approved the "final courtesy RMA" and someone in another department and my phone call was all it took to reveal and resolve the communication issue.

Just got my mainboard back from ASUS RMA for the 2nd time and it's still broken. Same behavior as before I sent it in the first time.

Spent 37 minutes on the phone with ASUS (about 35 of those minutes on hold) and they're going to send me another pre-paid label so I can send it in a third time.

At this point, I'm tempted to just buy a new socket 775 board and get on with it.

The saga continues (and it feels like it may never end)...

EDIT: If anyone wants to recommend a board or brand from the list linked above, I'd appreciate it. Might as well have a board picked out at this point.

Sorry to hear that. :( Not sure if you are interested in trying more "hand-me-downs" but I was going through my old boxes and came across one of these:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2457#ov
Its a GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3. Has the CPU fan attached though not sure what CPU is under there.. I know it worked when I upgraded my PC, but its been sitting for a while. The battery may need to be replaced.. :) If you want it let me know, I will get it in the mail. :)

That would be wonderful! Thank you!

I'll send a PM with my mailing address (though you probably already still have it from when you sent me the two 2GB RAM sticks). Just reply with the cost of the shipping and a Paypal address and I'll gladly reimburse you the cost of shipping.

FedEx tracking confirmed that my mainboard arrived back at ASUS RMA today.

Now back to forgetting about ASUS and watching for blsimpson's package in the mail. :D

I got blsimpson's mainboard in the mail today and...

...IT BOOTS! HUZZAH!

After my daughter goes to bed, I plan on installing the mainboard in my case (it's currently on a cardboard box for testing), connecting the remaining components, and installing Windows 7 64-bit tonight.

Yaaay~

Woohoo! Thats great news. :)

Yep! Installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit last night. Installed updates and a few programs (Chrome, CCleaner, Defraggler, MediaPortal, etc.) and plan to install Steam and a few games tonight. I'll also be configuring MediaPortal to play MKV with subtitles (I've already forgotten how, so I'll need to find the guide I used last time).

One of the sticks of RAM you sent me wasn't behaving, so I had to pull it. :( The other 2GB RAM stick works just fine, though. DDR2 RAM is prohibitively expensive ($50 for a 2x2GB RAM upgrade kit), so I'll probably just make do for now. I may also try updating the BIOS on the mainboard in (likely futile) hopes that I can get the board to accept the second RAM module.

I also discovered that the case plate I had for the ASUS mainboard doesn't fit the Gigabyte board, so there's currently no plate on the back of my case at the moment. D'oh! (You wouldn't happen to still have that plate, would you?)

But aside from those minor nitpicks, everything's working perfectly!

EDIT: I'm considering buying a new case and a Blu-ray burner (mostly for watching Blu-ray movies) now that I have a working machine again.

Well, good news about it working, but sorry about the memory.. It was working when I pulled it.. As for the case plate, I can look, but prolly not.. I will look tonight.

No worries. :) I'm glad to get any DDR2 memory at all, especially after pricing comparable modules on Newegg.

Update: I got the mainboard back from ASUS for the third time today. I may wait until Tuesday to test, when I can bring the mainboard, RAM, processor, and heatsink to work to test on our workbench.
