ok i have to much time on my hands and lotsa linux and hardware..... how do i make a linux streaming music server and what software would u suggest?

Ahh, my days of helping to run an internet radio station are coming back to me. =)

Overall, this is pretty simple. Just go here and download the Shoutcast server. From there, you can give the server a stream from any app that will support this (it's the way real radio broadcasters do it). But the easiest, cheapest and probably most familiar way for you to do it is by using Winamp as the source. To use Winamp, grab the Shoutcast plugin here. Run the server, hook up the Shoutcast DSP plugin in Winamp and connect to your local server (127.0.0.1), and you'll be good to go!

Disclaimer: keep in mind that broadcasting copyrighted music to the public without paying licensing dues is illegal.

Also note that, if you're broadcasting at 128 KB/sec, your upstream may not be able to handle many simultaneous clients. To solve this, either lower the bitrate, or (instead of running the server yourself) you can find services that will serve up the music for you -- you just provide it with the stream. It won't eat up as much of your connection, and you'll be able to stream to more people, but it will cost some money.

Hopefully that should get you going in the right direction. If you have any troubles or want someone to test it out on, let me know! ^^

was kinda kool but took to much for it to get the right band Rhapsody.

Or you can use a windows box and set up a station at www.pandora.com :)
When I read that sentence, all I saw was "windows box" and "pandora," and I thought, "Wow, how appropriate."

/grin

Don't worry. I like games too much. I won't be moving over to Linux any time soon (though I wish I could, and still play all my games).

HAHA! after 3 hours of hard work and labor, i got it to work on my linux box now ^_^

UT2004 and WoW both work on Linux. So does the entire Quake series and Warsow.
True, and I've all but retired from World of Warcraft.

Now if Valve would get all Steam games running in Linux, I'd be set. :D

You can get Steam working just as easily as WoW in Linux using Wine or Cedega (you need one of these to get WoW running). Check it out! It's worth playing around with in your spare time. You can even get xfire going in linux now (it's a gaim plugin though)!
