GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD!

DV, great to know you are safe. So, how about that church visit? :)

I'm wondering that too. Not only did it miss Houston, it was downgraded amazingly fast, even before making land fall.

CS, he very well could have been in the eye. The news came through my aunt, his mom. Perhaps he didn't want to worry her. Houston is very large so it probably had sporadic damage. As I watched here, the winds seem to come in waves. One place very quiet, while trees were bending in half in a spot only a few feet away.
My heart goes out to those who suffered damage and loss. Yet it was mild considering the widespread devastation that was predicted. Rita was expected to hover over our tri state area for four days! God was very merciful.
How did you fair at your house, DV?
Let's have church! :)

Sorry guys and gals, I haven't been keep up with this thread.

Let's take a look at EXACTLY what I said, shall we?

BTW, I'll be the first one in line for church services on Saturday if this hurricane suddenly dissipates in the Gulf of Mexico tonight.

Note that I asked for sudden dissipation, not for it to miss my house. By missing my house, the hurricane still did considerable damage, only in a different area. I was hoping that NO ONE would have to suffer, but many did and still are. People are still without power and the temperature has been hitting the 100 degree mark every day. There is also the loss of life due to this hurricane. I'm sorry, but looking at the imagines of children sweltering in the sun, covered in mosquito bites, a bus on fire with handicapped people caught in side, I don't see much mercy.

Could it have been worse? Absolutely. But in cases like this, I am left scratching my head when people say that God was merciful...when his "mercy" only extended to a few. Where was God's mercy during Katrina?

As for me, personally, we fared relatively well. The tree next door lost a huge branch and did some fence damage, but that's about it. Unlike other friends and family, I didn't spend 9, 12, 27, 32 hours on the road trying to get out of town. It was INSANE. At last count 30+ died in traffic, most due to heat as they chose to leave the a/c off because their gas guage was on empty or were already stranded on the side of the road.

Yep, pretty well expected you to have us with the "dissipation" disclaimer! Nevertheless, I think we were hoping for a great to be alive transformation!

I apologize for offending with the merciful comment. I truly don't take lightly the devastation, tragedy, and heartache that has been caused by Rita. I have several relatives in Houston, Galveston, and La Marque and my cousin, who is a police officer could not/would not leave. Even after Rita was downgraded to a 3, she was expected to stay inland for days and the photos Arkanjel shared were what was expected to happen to literally half of Texas.

The Houston area was on the "good side" of the storm. We had high winds as far north as Dallas area on Saturday.

Areas like Baytown are still closed, but mostly from wind damage and loss of power.

I thought carefully on how to phrase that bet :)

Thankfully with our "cold front" the temperature only hits 90 now.
