FF XIV Beta to open next week

this and SC2 are the only games i have been looking forward to in years. im pretty stoked.

/me considers fixing thread title to read "FF Online II Beta to open next" week, but decides to let it be

Seriously, though, it's not a proper FF. Not that I'm terribly concerned about the "prestige" of the FF franchise name. The series peaked with VI and IX was the last FF title (by order of chronological release) that I finished.

Square Enix is dead. Long live Atlus.

All that said, I still applied for the beta. Yes, that may seem contradictory at first glance, but remember that this is a major MMO beta. As the President of a gaming group that features several active MMO guilds, I apply for the beta for every major upcoming MMO.

I can say I certainly agree with a lot of the sentiments here. I don't feel that MMO final fantasies should have a numeral. I was super excited for FF 11, very excited during the install. I knew it was an MMO so it would be slightly different, but I still expected some amount of grandeur. Once I was done with character creation…I found myself in the middle of a busy city with absolutely no direction. I eventually wandered out and proceeded to farm horned rabbits over and over and over and over. I’ve had people tell me, “oh, it’s boring until you get to end game content…then it gets fun!”. I just don’t want to “work” for that amount of time to get to something fun when there are plenty of other fun games out there. Besides, every part of the game should be fun, or that part is just poorly designed.

Here’s to hoping FF XIV is fun…and that Brittany wants to play. :)

Tek, you need to give me some sort of official status so I can honestly say I "run a fan site of some sort."
Want to manage our list of Christian guilds? :D Right now, we just have a list for Christian World of WarCraft guilds, but I'd like to create a new list to include all major MMOs.

MMO developers: Read this:

I did not want to even view this thread because I knew it was going turn into this...sad day CGA...sad day... One of the only games I am looking forward to...it is going to rock! If you have no interest in the game, why even post here???

because they like to let everyone know how much more awesome the days of 2D/early 3D were. It's a status thing I believe.

I am personally not interested because my plate is full for MMOs. Unless it's a major deviation and is a total sandbox game like EVE, in which case it would instantly take top priority. Or even if it were PVP based, I might be interested in that.

Not sure if this was directed at me or not, but I was posting to explain that I'm interested "professionally" (because of my role as President of Tribe of Judah) but not personally.

If Square Enix makes a game awesome enough to turn my opinion of them around, then I'll admit it. EA (whose reputation has admittedly improved in recent months) did a great job with Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure and I posted that I enjoyed the game.

I think you just gave your age away, Elader. :)

Yes, "old guard" gamers tend to laud the classics while casting a doubtful glance at newer titles, but with good reason, especially when it comes to RPGs. Games like FFVI and Chrono Trigger are considered classics for good reason. There are some terrific modern RPGs, but "old guard" gamers are always ready to refute the notion that "newer and shinier = better." It's helpful to remember that gameplay, not graphics, is what determines whether a game will be considered a classic in the years to come.

I can't speak for other gamers past their mid-twenties, but I know that I won't slam a game simply because it's new. I played Final Fantasy XII with an open mind and, thanks to the 8th and 10th entries in the series, lowered expectations. It was a good game, but it clearly lacked the strong and likable characters present in older FF games.

TL;DR: If a new game is great, then it's great. If an old game is great, then it's great. Simple. If the latest entry in a series was preceded by mediocre titles, then my expectations for the upcoming title is going to be understandably lowered.

Whatever. I count myself among those as I mentioned because still say FFVII was the best in the series (though yes, Kefka's final battle being symbolic of Dante's Divine Comedy is rather interesting and unique...) and I didn't even bother playing any FF after FFX-2. :p

And I won't go into the rest of your post because I wholeheartedly agree.

It's just I see a "hype" post, to get hyped about an awesome upcoming game, and it seems that some people just like to try and kill the hype for others... That is why I avoided this thread for a day or two, I wanted to talk about FFXIV and how awesome it will be, but I knew people would be here to say crap that killed any hype this thread would cause... I don't jump into threads about games I will not play and say it is stupid...because it takes away from the joy of others...

No, but EVERYTIME a game is brought up, why does it have to be brought down, both you and Phantom "dis'ed" the game in the last post about it...why do it again? What is the point??

If your objective is hype instead of discussion, then you may have been better served by posting your thread on a Final Fantasy fan forum. Users are, of course, welcome to post threads about upcoming games, but given as this is a community built on a shared faith rather than fandom for a specific game or franchise, dissenting opinions on games should be expected.

<levity>

I mean, there are people on these forums who don't like StarCraft. They're welcome to post their opinions, too (even if they're wrong). :D

Then tell us why you think the game will be awesome. Who knows? Maybe you'll get some of us naysayers to reconsider our doubts. There are a fair number of MMO players who are burned out on MMOs from developers that refuse to innovate. Tell us (or link to articles explaining) what innovation the game offers and we'll listen.

On a related note, my comments pertained to the decision to number the game as part of the main series and the state of the franchise (based on VIII, X, and XII).

I should also note that I have two perspectives on any given game:
  1. Am I interested in playing this game when it comes out?
  2. Would this make a good chapter for Tribe of Judah?
I have to say "no" to the first and "quite possibly" to the second. It wouldn't be the first time that ToJ formed a chapter for a game that I don't like. (Remember Counter-Strike?)

I don't jump into threads about games I will not play and say it is stupid...because it takes away from the joy of others...
I fail to see how expressing an opinion takes joy from others unless the naysayers are bringing new and unfavorable information to light.

I'm excited about the upcoming release of Super Mario Galaxy 2, but I understand that not everyone shares my tastes in video games. If I made a thread about SMG2, I wouldn't be surprised if people posted that they weren't interested in the game because it looks so similar to SMG1. That wouldn't diminish my excitement about the game.

Because this is a discussion forum and we're discussing our opinions. It just so happens that our opinions disagree.

And I don't see any posts where anyone is calling Final Fantasy XIV "stupid." Phantom and I agree that FF MMOs should be numbered separately instead of included as part of the main series, but I don't see where Phantom comments about anything other than the game's title.

Eh, I have no problem saying I did not enjoy FFXI, since I didn't, but I can understand how folks don't like the negativity. That said...

I really, really, really want XIV to be awesome. :)

I just had some thoughts.
We know WoW is huge, and no matter how many "WoW killer" MMOs come out, it'll be a long time before any developer prys the #1 spot out on the PC. WoW players are simply too addicted. I predict that the next big MMO to hit won't be on PC, but on the consoles. Right now...there is no market penetration on consoles. FF11 didn't work because you had to buy a bunch of extra stuff, and people just weren't in the mindset of playing online on their PS2s.

So, what I'm basically wondering is... will Final Fantasy 14 do the same thing for MMOs on the console as Halo did with shooters? After all, as many PC gamers have always pointed out - there was nothing special about Halo. It just happened to be the first big multiplayer FPS on the console.

The next thing I'm wondering is...is this a good thing? I have suspected that one of the largest reasons PC gaming is on the decline is that most PC gamers are playing WoW...and nothing else.

Wait, is it 14 or 15 the one that's on the PS3?

And I think I signed up, but I'll do it again just in case. xD

Three thoughts:

1) You're absolutely right, Blizzard does have a chokehold on #1 for PC, one that will take a particularly stellar game to loosen. TOR might do it, but emphasis on might.

2) 98% of WoW players aren't addicted. It's just that good.

3) I'd actually challenge that PC games are on the decline because the players are only playing WoW. It's more that the other developers (other than BioWare and a few select others) simply aren't trying.

I think the eventual WoW Killer won't be a newly released MMO (sorry TOR). It'll be one that has been out a couple years, has very strong developer support (ie, all the bugs and problems that drove everyone away in the first year or so are fixed), and a vocal community. This MMO will release something (could be anything really) that catches the eyes of the gaming community again, they'll realize all the rumors about how buggy/horrible/etc. it was were debunked/fixed long ago, love it, tell their friends and boom: WoW begins to fade away.
