Diablo

We know that if our Lord were to show up all of a sudden, pull up a chair and watch us at the computer, he will begin a dialogue.

After studying the bible, this is what I have noticed these characteristics about the questions God will ask:

1. You will never guess what questions the Lord will ask
2. You will never guess the purpose behind those questions
3. You will never guess the answer God expects
4. You will never guess your own response
5. You will never guess what actions the Lord will do to help you understand all the above so that you can come to an understanding of all 5 points.

If you take a look at game such as diablo and said to the Lord, I am fighting evil as you instructed me to, what if (again, what if is a hypothetical, not a reality, but, a chance to explore a possibility) he said:

So why are you giving in?

Thats the type of question that meets the five characteristics of Gods questions, before the Lord asked it of you. What if he said:

There are real demons here for you to fight, there is a stranger down the street that needs your help, your family could really use your strength right now. So, why are you trying to fullfill these aspects of your life with a digital representation that will bear no fruit?

Now I suppose, if one wants to figure out if a game or any activity is acceptable to the Lord, there is a good question to ask: How does me playing this game bear fruit? Instead of asking, is this game satanic.

Theres some meat. Any idea's about that.

Sax-

I play games for 2 reasons, count them 2. They are as follows.

1. For entertainment.
2. As a mission ground.

God is not in any of these games. None. Not a single one. God didn't create the gravity in the flight simulator, the guy who programmed the gravity did. But you know what God is in? God is in us, and we are in the games, so indirectly God is in every game we play. Remember that. Because that's my mission.

I play games for one reason, contrary to others here: for fun.
I'm a Christian. I play games. The end. I play them for fun. I don't have LAN setup that my dad permits, so hey, there goes the ministry.
I like your points Saxamaphone, but, I dunno. I will fight for God where I am called to...be it to the bum, or to my own family, or to aright myself before His eyes, before I turn to help others in need.
That is what I think God wants me to do. Perhaps not. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the calling. I don't know. In due time, I will be shown the truth.

I've mentioned before that I'm not bothered (so far) by pentagrams and other like symbols in games that protray and environment where such symbols might be found. That aside, I've had many enjoyable hours playing Diablo II (haven't really looked at Diablo I that much) many hours of which were in small LAN parties with friends, teaming up and doing the quests. As [someone] said before in this post, draw the distinction between the game and your spiritual life.

Diablo 1 had no real class structure. You could pick a sorceror and play a fighter. You could pick the fighter but learn all the spells. It was kinda short-sighted. Diablo 2 was designed much better. It seems they put a lot more thought into it.

After reviewing 2 items they released info on for the upcoming patch I'm wondering how much thought they put into this patch... I won't know until I test it during gameplay.

I find d2 is not a satanic game at all. I just play on b.net and I find that the people who play it are the problem. Where I play (USWEST) people were constantly bashing God and cussing like sailors. I couldn't take it anymore and started playing CS (my friend turned me onto it) and introduced me to .fls.(Few Left Standing) and ToJ (Tribe of Judah). Im going to find it hard to leave this loving and fun gaming enviroment to go back to playing d2.

Easy solution: Don't play on b.net. Or at least, don't play in open games. My friends and I never play on b.net for the same reason. But we get together often for a little LAN party diablo-style. In fact, we are planning our next one for the new patch coming out, we are excited about it. Have you checked the site lately? They released pictures of 1 new item(unique jewels) and 1 modified item. They look pretty cool.

If you are interested in playing some b.net, maybe we could get a group of us together to play.

w00t, I'll have to get that patch :). Yeah, I've never played on b.net, and I don't plan to. It's just more fun when the people you're playing with are there in person :). Unless, of course, they're the people you were talking baout being on b.net usually...

B.net is still a fun place to play. I love walking in and nubs look at me and start trying to be friends. Ive made many friends that way but there already Christians or kindly said they don't care for God (I planted a seed though). I dunno I may start playing again since you guys all play.

Sax is a not a troll. I've always found his posts thoughtful and insightful. I don't agree with him alot (sorry dude, it's true!) but I always think about what he's written, because it's generally been thought about and comes from the heart.

That's worth alot.

If Sax feels that way, then he feels that way.

www.diabloii.net has every new unique coming in the patch. Yay. They also have info on the rest of the changes, though that stuff is said to be inncaccurate of what really is coming. However, Blizzard said that this is ALL of the new uniques.

That being said, I was wondering how many here are going to play? Probably the day the patch comes out a LAN party will start here, so maybe I'll have to post the ip of the host so you guys can hook up with us.

I dont want to read all this, but suffice to say, I wholeheartedly dissagree with playing this game. I believe its biblical that if you do evil or bring things of evil into your home, its supposed to invite evil. I mean really, unless youve been living under a rock your entire life what pops in your mind when you see a pentegram or a diablo. And another excuse people use is that you have to decide whether it feels wrong or interrupts your relationship with God, where in the Bible does it say something feels wrong then its wrong, porn can feel very right, its the fact that the bible says its wrong is where we should set our basis.

So playing a game because it has evil in it is the same thing as evil? I find it hard to believe...I just got through a demo of Diablo. Nothing bad at all. I picked a fighter, and what's interesting was that I was learning spells, raising my magic attributes and all that...kinda lame and all, but still.
You fight demons and undead. It's nothing different from Forgotten Realms. You go into a dungeon after being in a village. There. You fight monsters in a profaned temple. The end. You fight a big monster, Diablo. The end. You become Diablo. A further end.
There's nothing wrong with it unless you take it too far, and get too crazy with it.
B.net standing for Battle.net, right? StarCraft, WarCraft, Diablo and whatnot, right? Yeah...I try to avoid cursing and Godbashing when I can (which, it's easy to ALWAYS avoid it...just stick away from spots where you know God isn't wanted, despite the lack of reasoning behind it).

Dont you play Everquest, I can think of quite a few things "Evil" about that game as well. Any game can be evil or effect if you let it, if and when i play d2 i dont see the Demons or Diablo as the devil i see them as bad guys just like terrorists if im playing CounterStrike or the Axis in Red Alert.

It grows onto you, though, guys. Watch something bad enough and eventually you don't feel it anymore. (However, I believe watching the Terminator kill people to end the life of one future mother is DEFINITELY not the same as watching a coldly robotic German go about killing people in real life)

more does not equal better. the stuff we see on TV de-sensitizes us, that' not necessarily good. Seeing the 9-11 attacks made me think twice...this is not a movie this is really happening!!

I wonder if it was such an unexpected attack as we make it out to be...but I don't want to say so much that some government agent snoops me out and kills me. That would suck. (Paranoia?)
My name is also Mel Gibson, and I star in several movies. I also drive a taxi and believe that everything is a government conspiracy. A chance accident with a redhead will show me all that I think is true, too.
Lol. I dunno guys. I don't watching 9/11 made me grip my pillow with fear. It wasn't so shocking when I saw it. I mean, surprise surprise if America gets attacked. To see the Towers fall was something interesting, yes, but not shocking. However, it didn't necessarily desensitize me to violence or the value of life or "Muslims" or anything like that. Just another ruffle in the feathers of life I suppose.
And as you can see, it really is very little in vitality in comparison to so many things that have occurred in life prior to America and to other countries. Seeing it and hearing about it over and over and over, replayed, exaggerated and twisted didn't make me shocked or fearful or anything like that...it was boring and dull. Truly, it was. I got tired of hearing about it. Geez, give the dead guys a rest, will you? Did we make such a big deal over every battle that the Armenians and the Turks enter? No. Did we yell and make memorials in America dedicated to the Georgians (not American Georgia...neighbor to Armenia) when their own patriots died? Hardly.
Why should we gripe so much over such A LITTLE thing? And who here really understands the severity of the Armenian Genocide? Where are the tears for the Germans who froze to death when Hitler made the mistake of betraying Stalin?
They're still with 9/11 and that first Marine dude who died in Afghanistan.

Hello everyone, I realize this thread is a tad dated, just wanted to lend my two cents. I think we can all agree that playing any computer game is ultimately a vain pursuit. It's my opinion and more specificly, my intent, that particpating in these forums and meeting fellow christian gamers represents our attempt to bring God into this medium of entertainment.
