cp_egypt_v2 ***
This one was a bit confusing, and felt a bit unbalanced defense wise. Looked good, if washed out.

ctf_moonwalk_v2 *****
I lub it. Low-grav backstabs = win.

pl_dynamite **
It's "okay", nothing really special.

cp_boulder_v2 **
Too many paths, too huge. Good for 32 people, but with our usual 10-16, I say nay! Looks good, but doesn't play it. :/

cp_woodshed_b2 ***
I played it some, feels a bit confusing.

cp_bloodstained **
The BLU defending throws a lot of folks off, too tight at times.

cp_rocket_v3 ***1/2
I'm liking it more. Some minor problems like my SG being buildable above the silo door, doors open, and it stays in mid-air killing folks. Whoops. :p

Was a fun night though. No more Toy_Fort and CP_Labor please, kthx.

Map Review

It was nice to have a few people online last night; lots of fun.

Egypt = too tight for my personal taste

Moonwalk = thumbs up

Dynamite = fun from a defender's perspective, didn't get to try offense

Boulder = yes for a more populated server, wouldn't recommend it for our less-busy server.

Woodshed = thumbs up

Bloodstained = thumbs up

Rocket = thumbs up but spawn times were too long

I second the no more toy fort nomination although I think Labor is decent enough to leave on the server.

Woodshed was ok if you guys want it but I don't really care for it.

There was one good part in Egypt worth noting. When we made a cap some of the doors changed/closed in our spawn trapping me and one other guy, then the ceiling came down and squished us flat o.O :)

Of the maps we played the only map I am for adding is moonwalk. Normally I don't like gimmicky maps but that's because they often over do the gimmick and ruin the gameplay, not to mention the TF 2 feel. The low gravity however is not overused in moonwalk and as there are no other maps on our server with it I like it. It's size is also appropriate for our server.

I am sorry but I don't think rocket is ready yet. The gameplay is almost there (some sentry/spawn issues persist) but mainly a few of the visuals look incomplete. The alterations made did help though, it's getting there.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to work on the functionality problems a bit first, and then work more on the visuals.

Luvdiscgolf, what do you mean by spawn times? My map doesn't augment the actual spawn times at all. Do you mean setup time?

Also Gerbil, could you PM me some specific things? I've basically touched up the visuals everywhere that I could see them needing it, so an outside eye may be my best hope.

Ha, a *few*? I have a screenshot of the leaderboard at one point last night, I think there were 12 ToJ members on the server at it's max last night. I don't think I've ever seen that many ToJers at one time! It was great! Will post the screen shot later...

I didn't get to play all of the maps, but some thoughts on the ones I did:

ctf_moonwalk_v2 - clearly a winner. I wish the hallways had more visual cues to let you know where they lead to, to visually help you differentiate one from another, like some boxes in a corner or other debris, but otherwise fun map. We need more good medium sized CTF maps like this!

cp_egypt - it was ok, but I think blue is favoured. The points are really close to each other and if Red gets wiped at point one, Blue can rush and win the round pretty quickly. It *was* fun though, I like the multiple routes and there are neat places for snipers and grenades to perch. I'm willing to put it on the server, but for higher player counts.

pl_dynamite2 - I like this one, the mapper did some neat stuff where players don't have to follow the tracks to get to the cart's position. Once you get past a couple of points, you can take short cuts to get back into the game quickly. I think the doorways are too small in some places but otherwise I likes. Didn't get to the 3rd stage though. I'd include it 'cuz it's a good-ish payload map.

cp_rocket_v3 - fun, smallish map, would be good for small player counts (which is good 'cuz we need something else other than Mach and Labour). Too many players and it definitely feels cramped (not a criticism, it's just meant for smaller groups). There was the floating sentry problem that was already mentioned, and I think the doorways/ramps into rooms and hallways could be made wider - I felt like I was "catching" on corners too much, and gameplay feels a *little* spammy, just throwing rockets and grenades every which way and hoping to catch someone. I need to play it more though and see. I think it has great potential!

Didn't get to Boulder, Bloodstained and Woodshed, although I liked Boulder from before, but agreed, probably too big for our server. Bloodstained looks like a good, small CP map, and Woodshed visually looked good and had a nice medium size but don't know how it played.

I agree that moonwalk should be should be added to the map list. I had a lot of fun on that map last night.

I would also like to see rockets added to the map list. There was something about the map that made it feel very unique. However, I did have door problems last night, and that is a concern.

The other maps were okay, but I wouldn't want to play them on a regular basis.

I got you covered Shagz :). Here is a link to a screen of the scoreboard that night http://agapegraphics.com/tojtf2.jpg 12 Toj'ers (13 if you count Kiljoy who was spec'ing at the time). Darkbot and Tek were there at one point too but not at the time of that screen shot:).

Egypt- hard to defend but still was fun, very easy to play offense. My vote: Don't add

rocket- Like it, I love how you can jump on top of the rocket to get to some of the points. There are a few quirks that already were mentioned. My vote: Add to the server.

boulder- To big, was confusing even though I have played it before My vote: Don't add

woodshed- Kinda reminds me of cp_granary...i think that's the name. Would be good b/c its a smaller map but I think it might get old quick. I say we give it a shot. My vote: Add to the server.

dynamite- I like it but haven't played it enough to go every possible path to the cart. Easy to defend and if you like spy you will probably be good at this level. My vote: Add to server

moonwalk- very fun, great to play with all classes (especially if everyone goes scout :) ) My vote: Add to server

bloodstained- Didn't really like it. My vote: don't add.

My votes:

Pass: cp_woodshed, ctf_moonwalk, cp_rocket

Fail: cp_egypt, cp_boulder, cp_bloodstained

Indifferent: pl_dynamite

pl_dynamite is one of those maps that I'll play if there's a good crowd already gathered on the server, but I won't be excited about it. Don't be surprised if you see me starting a map vote for cp_dustbowl after the first two legs of pl_dynamite.

Wow, I'm surprised at the number of positive votes for rocket. Thanks guys. ^_^ I'm working on v4 now as we speak too, so it should be done in a week or so. I have a mostly free day tomorrow, so I'll be able to get a fair amount done then. :D

I has a blast the other night, here are my thoughts:

Moonwalk - Consensus seems to say we should add this and I concur, though it is a bit gray.

Egypt - Mostly fun, though somewhat confusing and samey in its textures.

Boulder - Pleasing to the eye, seemed pretty good for large groups. I think it should stay out of regular rotation, but I wouldn't mind leaving it as a option for when we can get a full server.

Bloodstained - Played mostly ok, but shame on the mapper for reversing red/blue's roles.

Woodshed - Seemed like lots of fun, pretty straightforward once you get a feel for it, I would like to see it on rotation.

Dynamite - Seemed rather defense favored, but enjoyable for the most part, then again, I was tearing it up so maybe I'm biased.

Rocket - Much improved lately, different pacing then usual, I would like it in rotation.

On a side note, with dustbowl serving as the only three stage cp map, I would like to see at least one more such map added to regular rotation, though the options here may not fit the bill. We should definitely schedule another custom maps night and try some more.

Dear Shadetaker

Yeah, Dynamite was a lot of fun, wasn't it? :) Tell ya what, Shadetaker, it was REALLY nice to play my medic with a heavy that actually realized it was to their benefit to not only blow everybody to pieces that's out in front of them, but also to be their Medic's 'bodyguard', lol. I'm closing in on 13 hours played on my medic alone, and you're one of the first people to realize that.

Also, I would really like to try out some more custom maps again, it was a blast! Thanks guys for organizing the event; if my kids had gone to bed at their normal time I would have been on right away at 8 pm...oh well.

K, well looking at everybody's feedback, here's what made it:

ctf_moonwalk
pl_dynamite
cp_woodshed
cp_rocket
cp_egypt (in by a little)

I'll be removing the following from our current map list:

ctf_freezers (great map, but always seems to clear the server)
cp_toy_fort

Which leaves these on the map rotation:

pl_goldrush
pl_badwater
ctf_mach4
ctf_turbine
ctf_impact2
ctf_2fort
ctf_chaos
cp_fastlane
cp_labor
cp_badlands
cp_steel
cp_gravelpit
cp_dustbowl
cp_granary
cp_well
tc_hydro

(I think that's right) Thoughts and suggestions?

PS - Never really been a fan of Impact, do people want to keep it?
PPS - Would definitely like to see some more CTF maps, if anybody has suggestions, I'm all ears.

Bwah? cp_egypt passed the vote?

The .bz2 download for cp_egypt is over 30MB, so it's possible the server will clear out during the first few weeks we run the map.

EDIT: We can build a new map pack download to include all the custom maps we run and advertise it on the forums and server. That should help.

<3 for ctf_impact2. With enough players, it's one of my favorite CTF maps.

PPS - Would definitely like to see some more CTF maps, if anybody has suggestions, I'm all ears.
If I come across anything, I'll post suggestions for playtest #5.

re: egypt...yea, while I think there were problems with it, I have to say that it definitely had its moments. That was also the peak of the evening on that map, 14 ToJers going at it.

I think I'd like to run it on the server and give it another chance. Tell you what, it won't go into the regular rotation, but I'll leave it in the map list so if admins want to switch they can.

re: impact...k, it stays.
