Cultivating

So overall, everything I've read pretty much maligns tradeskills in WAR ... but with my expectations set so low I'm actually pretty impressed by what I've seen so far. WARDB lists something like 250 cultivating mats to date ... and while a number of them are dupes or grays, that's a lot! Also, I get the impression that tradeskills are more intertwined than in WoW ... e.g. you'll need to buy/barter salvaged stuff to do cultivating/alchemy, cultivated stuff to do talisman-making, etc and not just on rare occasions but relatively often. But that's just an impression so maybe I'm wrong.

Anyhow, I have Gilgabear doing cultivating/alchemy, and so far I've discovered that:
1) The process of just putting a seed in the pot, letting it grow, then harvesting in 3 minutes is pretty smooth
-- You CAN add soil/water/nutrient during respective stages but don't have to in order to grow something
-- Most times I've gotten a skill point, even with just level 1 spores and seeds ... I'm in the mid-teens now
-- If you get a crit, then you get your seed back to use again
-- you can plant a seed, fight some mobs, and your plant will grow fine in the meantime. So while it does require a fair amount of interaction (e.g. you can't queue 10 things to be grown), at least you can sorta multitask with it

2) Bag space seems like it's going to be a issue because there are so many different spores and seeds (and then plants that come out of them)

3) I got a short-stemmed elvish parsely seed from some quest, and that seed which took a surprising 10 minutes to grow. So apparently there are some variable times on how long it takes to grow

4) I did soil/water/nutrient once but since it didn't automatically pop out an epic herb, I didn't try it again. Requires more study.

5) Unlike the WoW "work backwards" system where you get a recipe and then work to "fill in the slots" to make that recipe, this is a much more "find the ingredients, mix 'em up, and see if the recipe is worth keeping" approach. For now, while it's undiscovered, it's fun ... I wonder though if it'll all be reduced to tables on fansites in a few weeks.

Anyhow, anyone figure out anything interesting?

I messed around with Cultivating/Apothecary on Heavencent during the beta and will probably pick it up again on her once I can get in. Since characters were going to be wiped anyways and money really wasn't an issue, I tried the "add extra soil/water/nutrients" approach to growing things. I'd say that it yielded extra seeds/spores about 50% of the time...at least that's what it felt like. Didn't really do much with Apothecary cuz I was too intrigued with the plants growing in my backpack. Seems like a really cool idea though! =D

I wish talisman making was as simple. It would seem you have to have salvaging in order to get the 'essences' for the talismans, yet you hardly ever see a salvage drop. I get seeds all the time, and get talisman items which need essences to combine with them. I went back to scavanging in order to make gold so that I might be able to purchase stuff in future. We'll see.

Just found this interesting forum on talisman making, evidentally you need to salvage green items as well as the 'salvageable' items for ingredients. check this forum:

I'm up to level 50 cultivating and apothecary and the potions really seem nice. I've been sending most of the more useful ones like +130 AP, +strength or healing to FJ, but at some point, selling them shouldn't be too hard. The biggest challenge is getting from 1-50 where you get your second plot for cultivating. Bag space isn't nearly as much of a problem when you don't have a huge backlog of seeds waiting around.

I've also made some gold core essences for talismans with one of my herbs and gold dust from salvaging.

It actually seems that some of the better potions will come from salvagable items. For example, I can make a +600 health potion from engorged leaches, although unfortunately it's bound on pickup so I can't share.

With the economy they seem to be making here, there's huge potential for a guild bank. Of course, I understand they actually HAVE a guild bank (not just a toon called guldbank) so in a few weeks when our guild levels that far we should have a good way to save good stuff for pots and talismans without eating our bag space.

I don't want anyone thinking Deamiter is giving me special treatment over anyone else, but the reason he is sending me alot of the pots he makes is because I am sending him a ton of mats to create them with.

BTW Deamiter, don't hate me when you check your mailbox today.....you'll be standing in front of it for about a half hour unloading approx. 50-100 mailed items.

The guild bank in this game already seems like it will be put to good use. I like how all of the gathering\crafting skills coincide with each other so well, requiring a bit of each for things to work. This ought to make the AH a bustling place very quickly.

Yikes! I'm not even sure how long I'll be able to play today as I have a class this evening!

I'm also happy to take general requests in game -- if you have some seeds and would like some potions, just get them to me and I'll send you some potions. Mail is inefficient as it charges 30c per letter, but it's by far the easiest. Note that "cultivating level 1" seeds are largely useless to me so unless they're for a specific plant for a specific potion, don't bother sending the little guys. Level 25 seeds will be useful for weeks to come as they often make potions that can be used by toons under level 10.

Also, I try to keep the most useful potions like +action points, +armor, +health etc... so if you see me in a scenario (even if you have no mats to trade), let me know and I can probably unload some potions to a good home.

For the moment, I won't take payment for pots as the mats are largely free -- as we get into much better potions that'll probably change but by then we'll probably have a guild store of pots and mats which will help a lot.

I'm distantly trailing Deamiter here (skill level around 30), but on the same general path. As he points out, the tradeskill system in WAR would really seem to leverage a cohesive guild who share stuff ... but in the early stages there's probably some value in just noting who's working on what tradeskills (if any) so if you get a green seed/shattered item/whatever, you know to send to to your friendly cultivator/salvager/whatever ... and that may also help spread out the work load a bit.

I don't craft. I took scavanging and am saving up my money to purchase the items I need in the future (hopefully at a sweet guildie discount rate!!). I was considering saving and mailing the drops I get to our guild crafters, however, the 20 seconds wait between mailings just takes too stinkin long!! Once we have access to the guild bank, I will drop stuff in there.

I recommend we find a way to announce items to "Be on the look-out" for. That way, "hard to come by" items don't get sold to the vendor because I'm..errr..someone is to lazy to wait out the 20 second timer on the mailbox.
