Creating the ultimate 48-49 PvP Hunter

Tek7 (Legacy)

CGA & ToJ President
As stated in previous threads, my current plan with Ulfbrikt is to level him to 48, equip the gear I've purchased for him, and camp out in the battlegrounds for an undetermined amount of time.

I spoke with Anadi, Hunter extraordinaire and owner of DonFlamingo, and he provided a great deal of insight into playing a Hunter in PvP. He informed me, much to my dismay, that Stamina is a very important stat in a Hunter's build. With nearly a full set of Tough Scorpid Armor and Bloodlust Bracelets in the bank, I was hoping that Spirit would be a Hunter's secondary stat.

So, at level 45, I'm reconsidering my original intended build for Ulfbrikt at 48. I've done some preliminary research on Thottbot and Allakhazam and found a few items that I may purchase from the AH.

Before I go off and start buying greens and blues off the AH, I want to enlist the help of the guild in creating the ultimate 48-49 PvP Hunter. Here are a few of the questions I'm looking to answer:
  • When I respec, how should I spent my Talent points?
  • What stats are most important for a Hunter, and why?
  • What ratios should I use to determine the desired stats for my Hunter? (For example: 1/2 Agility, 1/4 Stamina, 1/4 Spirit.)
  • What are the best pieces of armor for a 48-49 PvP Hunter?
  • What are the best weapons for a 48-49 PvP Hunter?
  • How should I configure my keyboard, hotkeys, and action bars for PvP?
  • Should I consider Leather armor even though I can wear Mail now?
  • What enchants should I buy?
Any and all advice is appreciated. While I know that teams are very important in PvP, the stronger Ulfbrikt is in the battlegrounds, the better chance I have of enjoying PvP.

NOTE: I'd prefer to buy items off the AH rather than run instances for them, so BoE > BoP; however, if a BoP item is significantly better than any BoE item, I'll consider running the instance where it drops.

First question: Grimlok's Charge or Ribsplitter of the Monkey + Widow Blade of the Monkey? The question is more theoretical, as the chances of ever finding both "of the Monkey" blades are slim to nil.

Grimlok's has better stats than both blades combined, but far fewer DPS. Thoughts?

EDIT: Nevermind, Grimlok's turns out to be the better (and less expensive) choice.

Click here to view my level 49 profile as originally intended, then select "Wish List" from the "View alternate profiles" dropdown box to view what I've dreamed up so far. If the Hunters in the guild could view the "Wish List" profile and provide feedback, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Please pardon the third post in a row, but I'd like to list the items I'm watching for to make Ulfbrikt pwn in PvP. Here's the full list:

EDIT: I'm going to split the "wish list" into separate posts, based on slots.

Chest
Lord's Breastplate of the Monkey
http://thottbot.com/?i=15418
288 Armor
+14-15 Agility
+14-15 Stamina

Formidable Chestpiece of the Monkey
http://thottbot.com/?i=12999
283 Armor
+14-15 Agility
+14-15 Stamina

EDIT: Removed Atal'ai Breastplate of the Monkey as the chances of it dropping are astronomical.

EDIT: Removed Dragonscale Breastplate as I was informed that resistances are not as important I had thought in PvP.

both are good though since you are dwarf i would say gutbuster if you plan on maxing out your lvl 49 killing power (you would seemingly be a 50 with the gun)

also all your gear should be of the monkey. period. if you are going for PVP high stam/agil is key. your enchants

boots minor speed
chest +100hp
bracer +9stam
gloves +7 agil
cloak +5 all resist

Glad to hear it, since I spent 35g to buy it. :D

Roger that.

What about Dragonscale Breastplate? Should I gather the mats for it, or purchase an "of the Monkey" breastplate instead?

Got the mats for two of those enchants, and a pair of Swift Boots ready to be enchanted.

Going to buy the mats for this soon.

I researched the mats fro the +7 Stamina and the +9 Stamina, and I think the +7 is a better bargain. The price difference is too significant for another 2 Stamina, IMHO. Then again, I might have miscalculated the prices.

Isn't this one rather expensive as well? I'll have to go back through Thottbot and check.

Hm, I'd forgotten about that one. I already have my Serpentskin Cloak enchanted with the +3 Agility enchant, but it seems the +5 All Resists enchant would serve better in PvP.

Thank you both for your feedback. :) I admit I'm still something of a n00b to PvP as I've never rolled or leveled a twink and I didn't enjoy PvP until level 38. I'll keep an eye on the AH for "of the Monkey" equipment and try to run Uldaman this week for Grimlok's Charge.

Ah, thank you. This should be most helpful as a reference. :)

Next big questions:
Also, what are the best neckpiece and trinkets available to a 48 Hunter that's Neutral with Silverwing Sentinels? I plan to purchase Rune of Duty as soon as I reach Friendly reputation with Silverwing Sentinels, and Sentinel's Medallion when I reach Honored.

One other question: What are the disadvantages and advantages of using Grimlok's Charge as opposed to dual-wielding Ribsplitter of the Monkey and Widow Blade of the Monkey (besides the cost of purchasing the latter two blades)?

Trueshot is pretty much a raid build, and when I pvp solo it doesn't really help anyone but myself (and my pet).

Here's a survival oriented build for a 49, survivalist is a good for pvp 10% more hp. The other things such as counterattack/deterence is to help you get into range against a melee class. The only bad thing about this is no scattershot so you have to make sure you pet is not attacking (or not being attacked) anything when you FD + trap

You asked me earlier why I was using a weird pet.. The main reason is most of the pet's growls don't really work when a hunter gets well geared. Normal mobs take 3-4 shots to kill, it takes a pet 2-3 growls to hold good agro so why bother wasting 15 seconds for pet to get ago when the mob takes only 6 seconds to kill.

Edit: In raiding instances hunters can choose to have pets out or not, some places are used to pull with pets. Pets aren't totally useless once a hunter is geared, it just becomes a habit to not rely on pets that much.

Aye, it seemed as though it would be of greater use in a raid than a battleground.

Excellent. :)

Either I wasn't using it correctly, or Scatter Shot didn't work for me as well as I had originally hoped. I had hoped it would kick aggro from me to a tank, perhaps even my pet, and afford me time to run out of range. It rarely did anything of the kind. So I'm not too sad to lose Scatter Shot.

Which point would you exclude if I was to take the build down to level 48? Here's the modified build I came up with (just guessing).

Roger that. I've noticed that Growl is nearly useless when I crit with an Aimed Shot.
