I finally got the new modem setup after lots of problems... Whew.

Does anyone know if cable modems are faster than others?

We upgraded from that RCA one which you rent, and appears to be really cruddy. We got a Motorola SURFBoard 5120

I am glad we bought this... IT was on sale, typical cheapo dad... =D

40$ modem!!! WOOHOO!

dang, not even glitch gets 500kb off his cable, geeze

uhm is it legal to buy one of them modems except im running on dsl..? my modem which qwest let us rent is total crap so im wonderin if its legal to get somethin like SA

Maybe i should look into that, with my dsl i am getting like 40 KB sec download speed, maybe it will go up to like 150 with a new modem lol.

ya, they said it was the distance, but we aren't that far from it, but it really makes me mad, 50$ a month for 40 kbs downlaod speed, hmm, something seems fishy.

IT IS LEGAL! i'm using comcast, and you gotta let it register, IP, register in comcast and all this junk. :p it worx!

One thing is for sure, the speed you have now, will not last. If it does last long, heh, I wish I had that speed too.

DSL: Uses your existing phone line, ex; your telephones. for internet usage.

Cable: Uses your existing cable wire, ex; your televisions. for internet usage.

We got a Motorola SURFBoard 5120

Or it could be just your modem that gives you extreme high speed.

My Cable ISP is, Shaw. They have a new modem and extreme high speed, I'm thinking of getting that next month. But also, most (I assume) Canadians are using, Shaw too.

The modem doesn't make a huge amount of difference compared to how far from the main line you are. Every place I have lived the speeds were radically different. I live in an apartment complex now and it's horrible because everyone is probably on the same thread.

However, for a few glorious months I was in a test area for fiber optic. I was getting 10000+. And paying the same as everyone with DSL. I dunno if the modem was special in some way, too. Too bad that apartment complex was horrible in every other way possible....

Sweet, Im getting the new modem and extreme internet on Thursday, for 10$ more per month! :D

(I rent the modem from Shaw..part of the montly fee..its like 4$ i think per month) So they replace your old modem with a new one, if you upgrade to Extreme-I :)

But when I called the lady said if u go for extream u have to buy the modem, u can't rent.
I'm not sure if we're renting right now. I think we got the modem free from signing up.

ah nice. hmm, yeah the shaw support is usually good..but sometimes it seems a couple of the people don't know what they are talking about..try calling back a couple times and try talking to different people. That's wierd, all I have to pay is 25$ service call for them to come and "adjust the modem levels" or something and plug in the modem.

We brought the old modem since renting would cost too much.

We called them up and they said, when we've switched to Extreme Speed; http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/ShawHighSpeedXtremeI/ , it would cost $10 more to our cable bill and they would give us the new modem, free. We went to their Shaw Store in their Burnaby location, went to the front desk, and said that were exchanging our old modem for the new modem. Took about 10 mins, but we got it. No installations required! Just hook it up and it should work.

The modem is compact, small, has alot of lights, even has a standby button. :)

I also noticed my ping in CS isnt 100-150!, its 70-99! :D (On Eastern server)

I guess you'll have to find it if your renting or you brought the modem, Gandhi. Call and ask, call and ask.
