bleeped out words in alliance chat

Imagine that - non-Christians being non-legalistic and it works out fine.

Thanks for the good advice ppar3566. Take care down-under.

Made me laugh and raise an eyebrow.

It is the natural way in which it is done that works so well. A good example is where a new member dropped the f-bomb useing the usually tricks to get around the filter and one of the officers quick as anything lol'd at the joke but then said something along the lines of "now now we do not have that sort of gutter talk here". I have found that works so much better than "that language is completely inappropriate, you have been warned". But again it is a case by case sort of thing and depends on the history of those involved.

One last thing before i go. I always think you should bring these sort of things up with officers first but also maintain a benifit of the doubt policy. I wasn't there but I know that sometimes I have read comments in-game and thought they were rude or teasing but found out later they were not. It is extremely difficult with online stuff as all non-verbal communication is excluded (remembering that non-verbal accounts for 90% of communication). This requires both writer and recipient to ber careful and not read to much into things. Sometimes i have written the same thing twice by accedent or said stuff in ally chat that was meant for team chat (stuff i wouldn't normally say in ally chat). It is just one of those things that happen.

Well, I'll admit I'm a rules person. I like rules, however I see what Abba is saying and I agree with him. We really need just a set of guidelines rather than hard fast rules. After all this is a game and we are here to relax and have fun. If you're constantly worried that you're gonna break some guild rule, you can't have fun.

I know that people reading this thread probably think that we have a horrible problem with language, but we don't. Honestly, it's rare that I see something inappropiate in ally chat and even then it's generally something mild like "retard" or "crap". Most folks when spoken to about it either apologize or decide this guild isn't for them and leave.

At the moment I think we have probably 3 issues at most in the Alliance and most of them don't even need much action.

1. Language. What should our response be, if anything? This isn't a bad problem. We have some great members and most of our members have been raised in Christian homes or are currently in a Christian environment. These aren't folks who are profane in casual conversations.

2. Personal conflicts - difference of opinions. Like any group we'll have disagreements. It seems like recently we've had our share of personality conflicts. The best advice here is simply to keep it out of alliance chat. If you see a conversation escalating into a major disagreement then just take a moment to calm down. You can take the conversation private or suggest that it be left until everyone involved is calmer. It's tough talking over the internet because we can't hear vocal inflections. It's easy to assume that someone's chat line is more offensive than it truly was. It's doubly hard when you barely know the person typing and do not know their personality or even their age.

The officers have been great at dealing with this when they are online. STC especially is great at stopping blow-ups before they happen. Yesterday, I was online when someone asked a question in Alliance chat was both rude and very inappropiate. (No, i won't say what it was, so don't ask) STC answered the question and told him that this wasn't a topic for Ally chat. The asker kept talking saying he didn't see anything wrong with the topic. STC politely but firmly shut him down and the matter was closed within a minute.

3. Cheats - for me this is the biggest topic. I cannot stand cheaters. Anet will permaban anyone caught using a bot or macro cheat. I know SoE/SOE has a standing policy against cheaters in our guilds, but I don't know that the other guilds in the alliance have the same policy. It's something the leaders have discussed and I do not know their decision. It's probably best that each guild leader think about it and decide what their own guild's policy should be.

Ok, I guess I'm up to 4 cents now. I'll shut up and climb off the soapbox.

lol idk Raven, this might be a new farming spot ;)

I don't want this thread to turn into a rant session (which is hasn't so far) but if anyone still wants to get their 2-4 cents in go for it. I think we are theoretically democratic.. maybe more of a monarchical democratic. ANYWAYS.. your opinions matters to us and we are just people, which means that we pass over ideas that are really good. So help us guys, this is your guild too. The Officers are working hard, its just difficult right now due to lack of comm, but we are working on it. You guys can help a lot! We're in the forge right now, lets make sure we come out strong!

Actaully, we are more of a benevolent dictatorship.

The way the game is set up, the leader, and to a slightly lesser degree, the officers, are in control of what happens in the guild and, as lead guild, the alliance. However, the mantle of leadership, for our officers, is one of servitude, not power. Additional officers have been promoted in the past for showing signs of servant leadership, emotional and spiritual maturity and participation in both alliance/guild chat and forum use.

In the past, I've leaned away from rules and strictly spelled out policies because of many reasons:
  • I don't like reading Terms of Service documents, and adding another to a guild/alliance makes it less friendly.
  • Terms of Service tend to be glanced over, at best, and I don't want to be stuck enforcing a bunch of rules no one has really read.
  • There are almost always exceptions to a rule.
  • As soon as we have hard rules, we'll start having problems with vigilante policing by those whose only interest is following the letter of the law, not it's spirit.

Ultimately, we have only two rules:

Jesus said:
'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. -Matthew 22:37-40 (New International Version)

This will be our starting point tomorrow night.

Hey...sorry, I know I haven't been the best at communicating this past week...due to real life stuff I can hardly ever get on anymore. But I will do my best to try to stay semi-involved and help out wherever I'm needed...miss you guys.

*Thinks* I had a Wednesday meeting...what exactly would that meeting be? Lol. I'm terribly lost right now, sorry.

LOL - I was actually directing the question about the Wednesday meeting to DZwart - referring to the meeting on language in chat.

Maybe you're not as lost as you thought for a second there.

Sorry, I do owe you all a quick summary.

During our leadership staff meeting we talked about:
-Communication between guilds - much discussion - final decision was that for now, we are going to use the xfire forums as a common point that the leadership of each guild should assign one person to. The officer's private forums there will offer a place to keep in contact and, if necessary, discuss issues. Please note, that you do NOT need to use the x-fire client to sign up for an account on the x-fire site and use the forums and calendar there.
-Chat guidelines - we reviewed the chat guidelines (as posted on the guild information sticky thread here) and agreed that it was a good summary and we'll be working to make sure we continue on the same page
-Reporting/Discipline - main thing here was that we all agreed that if there is an issue in alliance chat, report it to one of your officers or the officers of the person you have a problem with. TAKE SCREENSHOTS - if an officer from either or both guilds is not online, we will need to see something to show what happened, not just "He said, she said". Most importantly, DO NOT harass anyone in alliance chat or demand that someone come to a guild hall to talk about it, even if the perceived behavior continues. It is against the ANet policy and is not the Christian way to react.
-Guild/alliance events - discussed SoE/SOE PvP nights and the EotN vanquishing events hosted by LION. Encouraged others to add their own events if they think one is needed (this goes for anyone, not just officers).
