Watertown Police D.A.R.E. Program
The DARE Program is a drug abuse prevention education program designed to equip elementary, intermediate and high school students with skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment with alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. It is an intricate component of communities drug prevention program. DARE utilizes uniformed police officers to teach the formal DARE curriculum to students. These DARE instructors serve as role models for impressionable youth while providing awareness to the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. In addition the DARE officer plays a significant role with regards to the prevention of tobacco use through such efforts as seeking merchant compliance and enforcement of state laws prohibiting sales of tobacco to anyone under 18 years of age. DARE seeks to reduce tobacco consumption by working with other prevention programs in educating our youth about the hazards of tobacco, limiting youth access to tobacco and reducing exposure to second hand smoke at work sites and public spaces.
DARE also provides instruction on how to reduce violence through peer mediation and conflict resolution. To this end DARE officers pledge to work toward the goal of a drug and violence free community.
Watertown has one DARE officer currently instructing the Grammar and Middle School Programs, Officer Anthony Fantasia. In the future it is the intent to implement a DARE Parent Program and a High School Program.
