Magic the Gathering (physical card game) vs Magic the Gathering Online vs Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers

Discuss :D (Trying to decide the best route for me and my friends)

I love Magic. A lot. It pleases me greatly to see a thread for it. :)

I haven't played MtG:O, so I can't comment on that; I'm slowly building my physical card collection; and I'm a huge fan of Duels of the Planeswalkers despite its shortcomings.

If you want the cheapest path to playing, it's gonna be DotP. If you want to see to it that you and your friends can stay on relatively equal footing regardless of gaming budget, then I would again say DotP. But if you want the full experience, then DotP really isn't for you; at least, it's better suited as a quick-and-ready way to play Magic on a whim or when your friends aren't available to play with.

I haven't actually played MtG:O, but from what I understand of it, I recommend the real deal over it. If for no other reason than the fact that getting the cards you want on the cheap is pretty easy. Don't know what you want exactly? Check in with Channel Fireball where you can buy 500 packs of randomly selected commons from your expansion of choice for $6 a pack (note that these packs don't come with land cards, so you'll have to buy a land package, too). That'll get you started with a ton of deck options. There are a lot of strong, useful cards available among commons, by the way. You can buy singles from them at good prices, too. So once you play a bit and get a feel for what kinds of cards you like most, what style of decks you want to play, you can find the best card options by reading up on MTG Salvation's wiki and forums.

I'm a bit biased toward the real deal card game. I'm very much a "I want physical media" kind of guy. However, the ability to play the real game on a decent level without spending big bucks is nice. Winning big tournaments with a box of commons may not be terribly likely, but good times with friends is definitely doable. And, should you want to upgrade to a more high-profile tournament ready deck, it's easy to get a good foundation on the cheap and can get uncommon and rare singles without dropping a fortune for the most part.

Just stay away from that Jace, the Mind Sculptor mythic rare if you are wanting to protect your wallet. lol

Side note: Admittedly, I'm a sucker for intro pack/theme decks sold at the store. Yeah, there are better deals available, but I'm still a fan. I may or may not have picked up another intro pack last night (which makes for my third intro pack purchase). Should you wanna pick up a ready-made deck, it's not a bad way to go. Still, I'd recommend hitting up MTG Salvation wiki to look at the detailed card lists of what lies within each deck. If you wanna be able to play in "standard format" tournaments, don't buy a deck that isn't of the Zendikar, Worldwake, or Rise of the Eldrazi expansions. Any other decks will not be in standard format for long.

Physical is definitely the best, especially if you are somewhere nearby your friends whom you wish to play with. If you don't care about sticking to the standard format and just wish to play casual with your friends you don't need to buy too many cards. DotP is fun and cheap but it is far from real Magic.

I am currently pricing out my "Life Processor" deck...I made it myself, but it was around the time a Phyrexian Processor cost $50 just about anywhere...now that it runs around $4...I will probably be able to construct my ultimate deck within a year...

Very nice. I'm gonna start working on an Allies deck soon. The intro pack I bought the other day was for the sake of getting me a start on such a deck. I guess Allies weren't introduced until the most recent block (Zendikar expansion to be specific), but they're really cool. Most Ally type cards gain, or give, benefits to other Allies in your control. They also tend to have a fairly low deploy cost. It's easy to get a bunch of them on the field at once... at which point they're all gonna be pretty beefy. There's nothing tricky about the Ally deck I'd build, but I like a no-frills approach every once in a while. Gonna stick with red and green. I don't like tri-color decks due to the lack of a consistent mana base. My favorite Allies are green, and I could go mono-green, but there are some really good red Allies... and red instants are just too hard to pass up in a deck like this. Since the deploy costs are relatively low on Allies (especially in terms of color-specific costs), a dual-color deck should work well.

Zy-on
Ta-Wa (long A on both)

I have been wanting to change the 2nd part to something better for a long time, but I have been known online by this name for at least 10 years...if not longer...kinda too late to change it now...

The physical card games is buy far the best.

DOTP you cant make your own decks

Magic online is generly used to play test tourny decks and if you want to get competitive it is alot cheaper then the real cards.

If you want to go allies I suggest bant allies(UGW). This ally deck is the only ally deck that I know of that has made a top 8 in a large tourny.

Anyone here registered with DCI?

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to read up on that.

I haven't registered with DCI yet; haven't made it to any real events (only played with friends and my brother), but I'm hoping to change that in the near-ish future.

Allies are basically Slivers, but they give all allies an effect involving coming into play. (If you don't know, Slivers pretty much all have an ability that reads: "All Slivers have _______" and then an ability)

Anyhow, my current deck is based around Landfall(also a Zendikar mechanic)

My deck (that I have planned) uses some old favorites if you will...nothing from the new sets...even though it might benefit from some new cards...

Landfall is a really nice mechanic... when you're the one using it. My brother has a landfall heavy deck, and I wanna slap him for it. Not that I'm any better when trying to build an Allies deck that is getting bonuses for every deployed creature. lol

Eventually, I wanna build a white-blue aggro-control deck and a mono-black life drain deck. Mmm. Vampires. lol

My landfall deck is blue/green, so I have quite a few ways to rearrange my deck and get land, also Roil Elemental is quite nice(especially when paired up with a Living Tsunami)

Roil Elemental is so evil. My brother has one of those, and I'm like... "nooooooo!" when he uses it.

Sadness. I'm about to leave for Florida for the next almost two weeks, and I won't be online during that time. Implication: I'll have to keep all my Magic thoughts to myself since few, if any, of my friends that I'll be seeing are into Magic. Alas.

I have about $20 to spend this week, and my opinions are... Buy some of the cards I need for my deck... Buy the Headblade for better shaving of my head... Or take advantage of the crazy steam sale...any thoughts?

Steam sale! :)

I am thinking of picking of TF2 or something since they are so cheap right now. :)

Well, I finally got my Nissa promo card from buying DotP, and today I went to my first Friday Night Magic, I lost spectacularly and I had a lot of fun doing it.
