Three requirements for Battlefield Bad Company 2 (PC) to be a critical success

Requirement #1: Don't include SecuROM. Seriously. DRM is a cancer, it doesn't help prevent piracy (at best, it delays pirated copies reaching the interwebs by 24-72 hours), and it only punishes legitimate users. Plus, many PC gamers hate it. 'nuff said.

Requirement #2: Don't drop support for dedicated servers. This should be an easy one. Include support for dedicated servers and you may pick up players who were disappointed when Infinity Ward slapped PC gamers in the face when they dropped dedicated server support for Modern Warfare 2.

Requirement #3: Don't suck.

That's it. The game doesn't need to innovate. It doesn't need to push the genre forward. In fact, chances are good it won't, since innovation isn't a financially sound prospect at this time and EA isn't exactly well-known for taking risks (e.g. every EA sports game ever).

I think PC gamers who want something other than the same old thing with a fresh coat of paint have given up on larger developers and publishers taking the chance on innovative game concepts and instead pinned their hopes for fresh ideas on independent developers like Jonathan Blow, who created Braid.

The news isn't so grim as it seems. After all, WoW borrowed heavily from its predecessors, added an abundance of charm and polish, and wooed 11 million subscribers worldwide. There's a lot to be said for polish.

IDK if you know or not from how you phrased that but the steam version better not have secure-rom as the page is already up to buy it and it says nothing. It does say...

Steam said:
ACCESS TO ONLINE FEATURES AND/OR SERVICES REQUIRES AN EA ACCOUNT AND REGISTRATION WITH THE ENCLOSED SERIAL CODE. REGISTRATION FOR ONLINE FEATURES IS LIMITED TO ONE EA ACCOUNT PER SERIAL CODE AND IS NON-TRANSFERABLE. EA ONLINE TERMS & CONDITIONS CAN BE FOUND AT www.ea.com. YOU MUST BE 13+ TO REGISTER FOR AN EA ACCOUNT. EA MAY RETIRE ONLINE FEATURES AFTER 30 DAYS NOTICE POSTED ON www.ea.com.

So a little extra thing there.

But would you buy the game, Tek7? If they meet your requirements.

#3 can't be a problem, it has crazy EXPLOSIONS!

Blowing up buildings, walls, stuff, lol.

Probably not. I have a backlog of games already and the Battlefield series has never really been my thing.

/shrug

Sorry to confess, but I kinda hope it is like MW2 and stinks on the PC. Then my choice is easy between the 360 and PC and I am guaranteed to have way more friends playing on the 360 since the choice was easy for them too. That's very selfish I know, so I don't really want that for you PC-only guys, just a selfish thought that enters my head on the topic.

Well ewoks, if you would come out to the Beta land [Which you signed up and accepted as ] you would know, but to stop rumors it meets all of Tek's requirements [at least as of Beta] and this will be one popular game but only if people have at least the Minimum requirements:

Battlefield Bad Company 2 has been added to the System Requirements Lab website.

http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/srtest/

System Requirements from STEAM:

* Minimum:
o OS: Windows XP
o Processor: Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHz
o Memory: 2GB
o Graphics: 256 MB Video Card (GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1900)
o DirectX®: DirectX 9, 10, and 11 support
o Hard Drive: 15 GB

* Recommended:
o OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
o Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or higher
o Memory: 2GB
o Graphics: 512 MB Video Card (GeForce GTX 260/ ATI Radeon 4870)
o Controller Support: Support for Logitech G15 and G19 keyboard LCDs in multiplayer

The video's look like the game, at least on Maxed settings - medium and also provides support for 3D glasses from Nvidia and 120hz and looks Fantastic on 1080p :)

There are already dedicated servers. I think most of the hosts now are 3rd party.

I think the EA account is used to sync the stats/rank progression (which is +1 in my book, because I hate transferring saved games). Every time I reinstall vegas 2 (which is practically never now) I had to spend 10 minutes editing the memory to unlock everything again (that I have already done before). Dumbest system ever from one of the crappiest companies. Srsly if your going to require a login at LEAST sync the unlocks.

You are correct, there are many 3rd party servers but I believe due to the open Beta worldwide these will also be some of the servers we see after Game release, as for EA account on Steam, EA/Dice will retain all Stats/ Login Data and Game nicknames on thier servers but the DL will be available thru Steam amongst other places and in the past EA Master server has had issues at times :)

Thanks Keero :). The Steam page I looked at for buying BF: BC 2 says nothing about secure-rom while the blog you linked to clearly says...

Online Authentication and Steam

The Steam edition will also have SecuROM. We are working closely with Steam to make the integration well-functioning.

I'm irked and steam will be getting a complaint. I should be told ahead of time I have to mess with De-authentication. Not to mention other steam pages list securROM effectively misleading you on this game. I have a bit of an overtly trusting nature but I'm not going to trust Steam anymore XD.

Source: Copy Protection for BFBC2 PC

Well, I'm out.

Someone let me know if EA reverses this horrible, horrible decision and pulls SecuROM from the Steam version. Until then, I'm strongly advising against buying this game.

Oh well. At least the PC FPS players still have Team Fortress 2.

I'm guessing you didn't buy the game, Gerbil, but here's an important bit of information for PC gamers that pre-ordered Battlefield Bad Company 2, direct from Valve:
As with most software products, we will not offer refunds for purchases made online as outlined in the software license - please review Section 4 of the Steam Subscriber Agreement for more information.

Steam Subscriber Agreement

We can make an exception for pre-ordered games if the request is received prior to the release date.
My advice to PC gamers who pre-ordered through Steam? Log in to Steam support (register an account if you need to) and submit a refund request.

On the other hand, it's better than MW2 so far and despite the SecuROM (which they clearly explain in the blog), I would advise people to check out the beta. It. Is. Fun. >.>

Except apparently the beta has SecuROM attached as well, so I'd advise against even playing the beta:
SecuROM and the Closed Beta

The main game executable (BFBC2Game.exe) of the Closed Beta will be wrapped with SecuROM. There is only one reason for this: to make it difficult to hack the Closed Beta client to run the final game.
SecuROM is configured to be passive. All it does, is make it more difficult to modify the game client.

When the Closed Beta is uninstalled, all traces of the game and SecuROM will be removed from your machine.
I wanted to give Battlefield Bad Company 2 a chance, but I'm not going to risk damaging my computer with legalized malware for any game.

How does it hurt my PC? -_-)
Link.

Ultimately, it's your computer (assuming it is your computer and not your parents; for kids and teens who still live at home, the decision should fall to the parents). You decide what to install and what not to install on it. I'm just trying to give people information that they might not otherwise see.

If you decide to take the risk and install a game with SecuROM attached, it's your choice.

I could be looking at this the wrong way, but Tek's link to what's wrong with SecuROM does list possible problems with the program... I make me feel like I'm reading the possible mishaps that could have happened to me when I had Lasik surgery done. I had over 3 pages of random events that caused people problems, but doesn't necessarily mean that I will have these problems. I guess, it's good to know the risks, but if you like the game, there are always risks.
