Christian music

Goongala!

I've felt some non-worship Christian music is a bit vague about saying God or Jesus' name. Switchfoot's "The Beautiful Letdown" is (or was I don't keep track) a very popular album in the secular world a while back. While the music was decent I felt like they were dancing around the subject. They never actually mention by name the solution to the feelings they were representing I.E. God or Jesus. The lyrics are definitely Christian in origin, you'd just probably have to be Christian already to know that. To think their songs may have reached a lot of people and caused them to ask questions about their life is great, but, since they never name a specific answer to those questions the people could just as well look into Buddhism as Christianity. I have mixed feelings about music that is open to so much interpretation. On one hand people who would not listen to more directly Christian lyrics may listen to it, and, when they find out it is Christian music be encouraged to find out more. However, on the other hand they may never find out and miss the point of the music entirely. I cannot speak for Switchfoot (because I only have one CD), but, I don't think it would hurt some Christian bands to fit God or Jesus in for at least one song. I don't mean every Christian song has to mention God/Jesus by name just say plainly what you are talking about at some point. John 16:25-29 anyone? I mean who hears all the lyrics in a song anyway, unless you already like the music enough to play it multiple times! For the bands, it's a question of who are you writing the music for God or People? For us it's really a question of praying that the bands are being lead by God to write music the way God wants them to. The different life experiences we each have give us the ability to reach different people because each of us can say "we've been there" when another cannot, different styles of music may be like that. It all reminds me of the Newsboys lyric though "Your in-depth research shows: drop the God, emphasize the beat I've heard that positive pop you dig-- I'd rather be buried in wet concrete" :D

I also wish there were more Christian songs on certain subjects because they are needed. Music often is used for specific purposes, not just because you like it. I mean how many romantic Christian songs are there out there. I can only think of D.C. Talk's "Godsend". There are probably more, but, I certainly haven't heard them on the radio. What if you want to have a romantic diner with you wife, but, don't want to listen or sort though all the lewd/non-lewd secular pop music? In my life I specifically have a need for Christian music to exercise, specifically vocal techno, or something angsty with a beat, but, there is only a few good Christian songs out there for this. I don't like linkin park's "Numb", but, musically it does get me moving (not that I have it). Christian music eschews battle music in general which is what I need :p That's my problem though, I like Christian music, but, some of the time it doesn't serve the purpose I need it to and with pop I am flooded with messages obsessed with un-clean things. I have a hard time thinking of a Christian songs that mention certain serious subjects too (like abortion, I know only one).

thats why i prefer country music mostly. a few songs here and there i will change the channel for, but %50 of the time the songs are talking about God. and theres poetry and they sound good. also epic rock sounds good and is poetic. yet i get made fun of either for it being country, or being a nerdy kid for listening to fantasy style epic rock....

I've got no problem with county (but it's not my thing). As far as epic rock it sounds like something I'd like, but, I don't know what it is :) . I myself listen to a lot of radio stations (numbers are worn off my remote from flipping :p) I don't think country talks about God quite that much, but, compared to pop which talks about sin about 80% it is a lot better.

I think the only reason secular music may be "better" than Christian is simply because there is more of it to chose from. It's a question of quantity vs. quality though. Meaning you can never get a deep meaning from secular music no matter how good it is musically. Christian songs may exceed secular because you can have not only quality music, but, a actual important meaning behind it. As everything has a right and a wrong way it can be done you can in theory have Christian themed songs on all the subjects that secular music covers too. Just as everyone else is saying though, whatever you like or dislike, as long as ok with God it's ok with me.

i think ur quality vs quantity is very valid, because ur never gonna find epic christian rock very easy (im still hoping) and the quantity just isnt there. i mean noone listens to christian country (at least i hope they dont) and the rock just gets.... tiresome because its the same old stuff while in the secular world, new in 2954320532850325832084235940x genres exist with new bands every day

For instance, "Praise You in the Storm" starts like this:

It's interesting that you bring up this song because it does indeed have real roots to it. I was at Creation Fest East 2 years ago, before the album with this song came out. They sang this song and told us the origins of it. It is a song that Casting Crowns wrote in memory of the daughter of one of the band member's close friends. The young girl passed away from some form of cancer and this song was written as a reminder that although life can be very hard at times, God is always with you.
