Are You Ready for World of Warcraft: The Movie?!
Posted by dvinson - Wednesday, May 10, 2006 1:44 PM

Blizzard Entertainment just announced a deal with Legendary Pictures, a Warner Bros. production company, to produce a movie based on World of Warcraft.

Following in the footsteps of Final Fantasy, Doom and Tomb Raider, Blizzard promises that the WoW movie will be nothing like those previous game-to-screen adaptations. The developer is going to work closely with Legendary to create a LOTR (one does not simply drive into mordor) type film experience.

There aren’t a lot of details about the specifics of the script, but I’m sure that they’ll be drawing from all the fabulous WoW fan fiction out there for inspiration. I hope they pick mine! Oh wait a minute, I was too busy *insert me being cooler than people who author WoW fan fiction joke here.* Thanks.

OH MY

I'm more excited about the MGS movie that was announced, those games were made to be movies in the first place.

Also, is it gonna be live action or what? If so, how are they going to keep the strange cartoony style? I just don't see how this could work.

It's live action, but the role of the orcs, trolls, and tauren will be played by Michael Moore. That is how it keeps the viewer in a sense of fantasy.

I'm worried about this movie. I know Blizzard does quality work, but the number of successful game to movie transitions can be counted on one hand...maybe even one finger.

Atown listed 3 games to movie transitions, there are still a few others, I'm sure thats more than a hand to count.

Wing Commander
Halo - Coming Soon
Silent Hill
Resident Evil
Street Fighter
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Yeah, but we were talking about good movies. And I'd add to that list, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Super Mario Brothers, and Doom. None of which were very good.

The only good game to movie was Tomb Raider (the first one) and even then the half-hearted acting of Angelina Jolie ruined it for me.

TMNT was a decent movie, but it was a comic book, then a TV show, then a video game, then a movie, and the movie really had nothing to do with the game.

Resident Evil would have been a good conversion, but in reality they just took some basic ideas from the game and created another survival horror movie.

Legendary, the folks making WoW, are also the folks behind Superman Returns. It seems to be pretty decent quality work, but I'm curious to see SR before I make up my mind on the direction it's going.

Also, if it's LOTRish, they are going to make the Horde very unhappy by telling them they are a bunch of brainless bad guys.
