Wii or 360?

I was thinking about throwing caution to the wind and getting a Wii or 360 with my tax refund. Right now, Amazon just dropped the price of the Wii below the standard 360 /w the hard drive, so I'm actually thinking about that. I've played both before, so I'm aware of how they play, and I like both just fine.

Wii has my two favorite console games - Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. I'm also interested in the movement and music games on the Wii, although both have Rock Band and Guitar Hero. The 360 definitely has more of the 'gamer's games', like Halo. I enjoy these games, especially in multiplayer. Anyone who does PvP with us on Guild Wars knows I tend toward melee classes, so I love games like Halo. I also like the fact I know a lot of people on 360 Live, including my brother.

I'd have enough to buy one or the other with money left over. I'd get maybe 2 games for the Wii, and 1 with the 360 (not big on the arcade 360, but that would allow more games).

I will also add that should I get a Wii, I'd be willing to lead the Wii chapter in ToJ.

Decisions, decisions......

I think you need a Wii. Note that there is no self-interest in this one; no, not a bit. :D

(I think they need to make a belly dance version of Wii Fit...)

I own a Wii, but I want a 360, so I'm conflicted.

There are several Wii exclusives that make the system worth owning: Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles (DISCLAIMER: NOT for the little ones), Okami, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Boom Blox, de Blob, and so on.

On the other hand, the 360 blows the Wii out of the water when it comes to online features. The 360 also has Soul Calibur IV, Street Fighter IV, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD, Castle Crashers, and...Well, I guess those are the only four 360 games I really care about right now. (Everything I've read about Beautiful Katamari leads me to believe I'm better off replaying the first two Katamari titles on the PS2 than dropping $60 for a lame sequel.)

I think a lot of serious gamers in their 20s picked up a Wii for lighter gaming and party games and also a 360 for "hardcore" games and online play.

Both consoles seem pretty weak when it comes to RPGs, though. Of course, so does the PS3 (so far). If you're serious about RPGs, pick up a Playstation 2.

EDIT: In this economy, it might be wiser to save that money. You have to think not only about the cost of the consoles and one or two games, but also all the controllers, wires, memory cards, and other accessories you'll want/need to play games in the years to come. Buying a console is just an initial investment (unless you modchip or softmod your console and just download games, which is illegal).

We have 2 Wii's and a 360 here at my house... I really like the 360. Strong library of games, but the multiplayer costs money every month. (20 bucks for 3 months) Wii... has a lot of shovelware/throw-away titles. And I prefer the 360's controller, feels better. I think the Wii had full Gamecube backwards compatibility where as the 360 has about 60~70%. 360 has some great RPGs though, Lost Odyssey, from Final Fantasy's creator, and there's also Tales of Vesperia.

...PS3 has both motion control AND a big hard drive, AND a Blu-Ray player...

Get a new PC is all I can suggest. ;P

lol hey ishy I say 360 but i am Biased lol. Although I own a Ps3 and a Wii and a 360. and a Pc. Most of my gaming is on the 360 and I already have you added to my Xbox Live there sooooo........ :P

A new and very convincing argument for the purchase of a Wii was announced yesterday: A remake of A Boy and His Blob.

I'm very serious about this. A Boy and His Blob was one of the best titles ever for the original NES.

Well, I found out I won't get the refund until April, so I have a bit more time to decide.

My brother used to have a 360, so I've played that quite a bit, although honestly, all I really liked to play was Rock Band and Halo. I also don't want to pay for XBox Live anymore....

If you Like Rock Band get a 360 because you can Download More songs and the Instruments are all compatible with Guitar hero and Rock Band. On the Wii you have to buy instrument for which ever you want to play no Compatibility whatsoever.

Plus...even though you do have to pay for the online play (60 bucks for 12+1 months), Xbox live has the BEST online features of any console system, in my opinion

Wow, just the mere mention of a boy and his blob has me hungry for ketchup-flavored jelly beans! Yummay!

Personally, I fall into the PS3 camp, as I love the blu-ray player, and most of what I would play on the 360 (shooters or RPGs) I would rather play on PC. I also feel that the 360 is actually the most expensive console...once you factor in the online cost and accessories (wireless adapter is expensive!!!, HDMI dongle, etc). The backwards compatibility (for the PS3 models that have it) is also much, much better than the 360...so that opens up a lot of options if you don't have a PS2 (or want to sell your PS2 to off-set the price).

I didn't pop in just to start a 360vsPS3 debate, though...different strokes for different folks. I did want to mention that Sony is currently running an offer on PS3s at sony-style.com. I don't have the exact URL, but the deal is basically "sign up for a credit card, get $200 off a sony purchase or $349 or more").

"Offer expires 03/14/09. Must apply by 03/14/09. Acct must be open by 04/15/09. Qualifying Transaction must be made by 05/15/09 to receive $200 Statement Credit. When first single sales receipt purchase is made equal or greater than $349 within 45 days of Sony Card account open will automatically qualify customer for $200 Statement Credit. Statement Credit will be posted to their Sony Card Statement within 8-12 weeks from Qualifying Purchase (first purchase does not include balance transfer or balance transfer checks) account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Offer available to new Sony Card accounts only and only one $200 Statement Credit may be earned per Sony Card account. This promotional offer is available for new Sony Card account holders only; existing Sony Card account holders or accounts are not eligible."

I believe you can pay it off up front (so no interest) or make small payments in between...but it's basically an 80GB PS3 for ~$199, all told. Anyway, I'm not sure how you feel about credit cards, or whether it's even an option, or even if you are interested in PS3 at all since you didn't mention it originally...just thought I'd mention it. :) Totally not advocating a credit card lifestyle, here, though...don't even think about getting a card if you aren't responsible with them! :)

I should also note, like many folks, I have a Wii to go with my current gen system, and it just seems to sit the most and collect dust. The more I look around forums, the more I get the general consensus that most folks who have a 360/PS3 and a Wii play their powerful console and let the other one sit. When a major nintendo release comes out, they buy it, play it in a few weeks, and then the console sits again. It really just comes down to what you really want out of a game console. I tend to use my consoles to play games by myself or local co-op with the wifey, and my PC for online co-op.

Personally I love the PS3. but the 360 is awesome . I've got a wii too but the graphics keep letting me down. Plus I'm to lazy to play it. It hurts to much. :) loads of fun with family sports. (did i mention pain).
You can't beat the user interface with a 360 unless it's a pc.
My PC graphics are better than the consoles now. (newly built pc).
I'd say a 360 would have my vote. Luv COD5 and COD4.

Okay, I will be getting the Wii, provided a get a refund eventually.....

I do most of my 'hardcore' gaming on the PC, and even a 360 can't beat the graphics on a PC, especially with my new video card. I don't like COD or anything that is extremely realistic. I like my games more fictional.

I love the movement option on the Wii, and being a highly kinesthetic person, that alone will probably make it worthwhile for me. I spent a good amount of time in Gamespot the other day talking to the guys who work there, and they both had all three, and both agreed I'd probably enjoy the Wii more. Plus, the momentum for good games is starting to build up. I could also play Animal Crossing alone for a year and be happy, but I would like to get Twilight Princess and maybe some movement games.

The PS3 is not an option. Even if I could afford the system, the games themselves are much more expensive. I'm also not terribly concerned with the blu-ray player, as I have a smaller tv (36") and nothing like surround sound or anything like that.

Well, the good news is that the "right" answer is whichever one you pick, since it's all about what you'll enjoy the most. I hope your refund comes soon! :)

Amen! All 3 have their little nich and having met ishy the Wii suits her lol :). I am one of those gamers that play on all 4 platforms lol. Ps3 is awesome. Ryan I can agree that the 360 maybe the more expesive if you buy everything for it. Oh you did say one thing wrong. HDMI going into HD the 360 has HD Component Cables the Ps3 has no HD cables stock with it you have to buy an HDMI cable for it. So in terms of HDMI both of them you have to buy the cables separate. The Wii pretty much has 480P which really is nothing HD lol. Also Good luck finding a Backwards Compatible Ps3 and in terms of it backwards Compatability it is about 80% which is right about the same as the 360. here as a guy who owns them all here is my take on the 3 systems.

Wii: The best experiance in terms playing with friends in your home. The amount of Quality games is its weakness although there are some amazing games on it.And Graphics are its biggest weakness for the next Gen Systems. Price tag $249.99

xbox 360: Positives the largest Library of quality games.Achievments ( the Ps3 does have tophies but they were added almost 2 years after the 360 had been out and actually became a factor on how we play games now. Trophies are also cool but feel a bit of a gimmick that Sony had to do to make their system better. That is the reason you will not see trophies as a Negaitive or a Positive for the Ps3 they wwere just kinda thrown in after the System had been out for a year) In the USA if you like RPGs this is THE System if you like shooter this is THE system. xbox live if you have experianced it is the best experiance next to the PC. Negatives (especially older models) high failiure rate which Microsoft just announced is solved and will no longer be an issue we will see. xbox live fee $49.99 for 13 months. No Blue Ray. Price tage$199.99 (No hard Drive but a built in 256 MB memory chip) 299.99 (60GB Hard Drive) 399.99 (120 GB Hard Drive and HDMI cables)

Ps3: Positives If your in Japan the Large Library of quality games. BLUE RAY!!!! Free Online play! Connects perfectly with your PSP with remote play! Negatives the online although better than the Wii does not compare to Xbox Live. The lack of a large library of games if you live in the USA. This one is sad because the Ps2 was the best in this aspect in last Gen. If you like RPGs there are very few on the Ps3! last No Backwards Compatability (I am comparing the New models not an issue if you find an older one.) Price Tag $399.99 (80 GB hard Drive 2 USB ports) $499.99 (160 GB hard Drive,4 USB ports and a Card reader SD and Psp Memory)

I did my Best to be fair and I will say this i used to be really biased towards the xbox 360. I did my best to set those aside which most I had when I bought my Ps3 Before Christmas I laid a lot of them to rest. for the last 3 years I have sold all 3 of these systems to people and i did my best to match them up with the system that best suits them. for me personally if I had to choose just 1 of the 3 systems (I love all 3 btw and have no plans to get get rid of any of them) I would choose the 360 because it has the most games really good online and the most Exclusive games for it. Next Choice is the Ps3.
