Where does a GW Newbie Go?

Definitely look over the guildwiki web sit that Wild Bill mentioned, this source has everything you ever wanted to know about GW and some stuff you didn’t think you needed. I wish I had let it answer some of the more silly questions I asked out loud. Probably the most sought out and useful character will always be a monk but they are also among the hardest to play right. With factions the Monk RT works well. I prefer Warrior as the starter character, just easier to play IMO. Once you get to the higher missions thought it is harder to get invites to groups as a warrior. The characters level very quickly in factions due to high reward missions and quest on newbie island, so you can really choose whatever character interests you most. You will be able to change your secondary profession almost as soon as you get off the beginner island so it is not really a crucial decision. My family and I are the guild officers in charge of new member assistance and if you need anything don’t hesitate to ask. Although we will be on vacation next week, look forward to meeting you when we get back.

Your life is now Gerbil filled rejoice!

I've taken the plunge and started my GW odyssey. My name in game is of course "The Mighty Gerbil". I have chosen Ranger as my first profession, not sure I like it but you could call me a Mighty "Morphing" Gerbil Ranger hehe. I will probably switch to an assassin later after I get the basics down. And now the moment you have all been waiting for... more newbie questions for you :D ! 1. Is there any simple way of finding the side quests? I mean there is nothing I see in game that tells you where they are. I have looked online and found a few listings detailing the quests but no maps telling you were you find the NPC to start them. I mean doing them is easy finding the a NPC to START one is a pain. I must be missing something. 2. Starter weapons what do you do with them. Can't sell them, can't dissemble them with a salvage kit but they do take up a lovely slot in my inventory. Are they useless so you just trash them? 3. Is there anything I could get on starter island that is worth hanging on to. I don't want to get the "Sacred whozit" and dissemble it because I don't know better. The only thing I have gotten so far that I think is rare is a purple weapon and since I am on starter island I figure it must be low/useless stats. Anyway I guess we will find each other in game by PM. I am of course to low in stats to do any quests with most of you but I could still get you in my friends list so I can annoy you with questions (when I put it that way how could you resist!):p

Hey Gerbil. Most of the primary quests are fairly evident. You will eventually make it to the missions which will have a "enter mission" button at the bottom of your party window. Keep an eye on your "L" menu for active quests. Anything critical to continuing training or the story line should be there. When you start working on secondary professions, you can do the training for each of them and finish the line before moving on to the next, or skip out at any time if a particular line isn't your cup of tea. In Factions, until you pick your secondary profession, most of the stuff you run into is pretty low level/easy. At the beginning, in the Monastery, the story line basically goes:

  • Initial intro training
  • Talk to your headmaster
  • Do primary profession quests
  • Talk to Togo
  • Try out secondary professions
  • Complete quest line to open up option for that one as secondary
  • Try other secondaries, if you want
  • Talk to Togo to pick secondary and get quest to first mission.

Once you've finsihed the first mission, run around the town you end up in and pick up any quests, usually the one that leads you to the next point in the story will be right in front of you when you complete the mission.

For side quests, they will never disappear for your character and if you miss one, you can go back and pick it up or complete it if you have it in your log, at any time.

As for starter weapons, there is no reason to keep them, drag them to the trash can icon in your "I" menu to destroy it as soon as you find something with better stats.

When you start to evaluate weapons, there are a few "greens" (color of item name when you hover your mouse arrow over it) available on the island. Those are not max damage, but great weapons in the earlier parts of the game. Only bosses (creatures with glowing aura) will drop them and if you find one (a bow for you unless you use another secondary) it will likely be the best you will find until after the first mission. Below green, gold colored lettering is the next best (and occasionally equivalent) followed by purple, blue then white. This is just a general guideline though, until you get to the higer level areas, you may find a blue colored item that is better than a gold one. Later in the game, after you have left the island, any green weapons will be "Max" and offer the best stats for a particualar attribute and upgrade set.

There are no epic quest items in Factions that if you delete or sell you won't be able to complete some end-game quest.

Really, the most important items to watch for drops at your level is to save crafting materials and rare crafting materials. It is rare, but occasionally a ruby may drop, these are very valuable and can be sold to a rare material trader in an major city (Shing Jea Monastery, Keineng Center, House zu Heltzer, Cavalon or an equipped Guild Hall) or saved in your material storage. I would recommend making use of the material storage to avoid cramping your character storage with crafting materials. Many of these crafting materials may be used to make better armor as you progress and until you hit max armor (70AC per piece for ranger), these supplies will be in short supply for you. Not all the crafting materials will be needed for all professions and not all materials have uses yet, like the rubies.

Please feel free to ask more questions or whisper me in game.

You are helping!

I am of course to low in stats to do any quests with most of you but I could still get you in my friends list so I can annoy you with questions (when I put it that way how could you resist!)

I was just being sarcastic :p I would not annoy you with stuff that you can read the instruction book for (which I have read, I've looked a good bit online as well). I have helped people on the one other mmorpg I have played and gotten mixed feelings about it. Most of the time people are genuine in their efforts to learn but sometimes you run into people who just want you to do their job for them. Anyway I guess that is the price of helping people, no regrets :)

You see some simple things I have questions for don't seem to be easy to find. I have not played online until a few months (about 5) ago so some simple things about forums, mmorpg's, and many acronyms still elude me (I have wondered a few times whether I was being insulted or complemented by secular people but this will probably always be the case with them). My comprehension is getting there though.

The primary quests I am not having any problem with. It is just finding the NPC that will start you on a secondary quest. I am spoiled from Silkroad I think. One of the few redeeming points about that game is it tells you where to find the quests. It does not really matter now that you have told me that the secondary quests do not disappear. I can just find them later if I wish (thanks DZwart)

I am currently at level 9 and moving along fine. I will have to start trying to find some of you guys online. I don't play at any specific time. I guess I will just have to whisper your names at random and pray for the best, unless you know a better way. Thanks again!

Oh

I guess I should ask does it matter which character of yours I PM or does a PM to one go to any you may be playing? Also is there any way to find people by the Guild tag "SoE"? I am only Toj now not SoE yet so I cannot use guild chat yet. Thanks once more!

Duh

I forgot about a program called x-fire hehe  . Any SoE'er can find me that way just look for Xfire username removed at user's request and add me to your friends but only if you want ;)

If you add one character name from any account to your friends list (N), it will show any other character from that account logged in as well. If you click the icon in front of their name, it will give you the option to whisper that person on their current character. Many things in Guild Wars are account based rather than character based like the typical MMO. Guild membership is also account based.

If you hold down the left ctrl key in town you can see all players running around in that town. Anyone from your own guild will have their guild tag in yellow lettering instead of blue. Alliance guild members will have their tag in orange.

The lighter blue names are people who aren't in a group and the darker names are ones already grouoped with at least 1 other person or henchmen.

Left alt is also useful in showing any NPC's in town.

xfire name is one2dredd I do not always use it but I have it and will try and use it more often!

Officially a Guild Buddy

I am a official SOE member now :D . Not sure how easy it is for SoE's members to find SOE's though. I am guessing everyone uses alliance chat so they can find each other and as I mentioned earlier you can find me on x-fire with jamesgalyon. Now that I am in SOE I probably won't use this thread as much, however, I did have one last really minor question. Is that a bell on the cape and why a bell. I mean is there some Christian significance I am missing or is it merely a case of a limited logo selection in GW?

oh

The design does not look bad. I just thought it was a bell :) Strong tower I get it now (it was a Newsboys song as well =P)

Yeah, I would've preferred MY design, the lion of Judah, I still think it looks cooler... but I suppose the Tower of God is all right. *shrug*
