I got a card in the mail asking me to join The National Scholars Honor Society. I have never heard of them...

Is this some grand scheme to get my information?

The website is www.magnacumlaude.org

Edit... they don't even have a Wikipedia page...

Me thinks its a scam...

lol.

Surprisingly they didn't ask for that.

(I did peek at the website, but didn't send them anything.)

My personal opinion is that honor societies are the biggest scam around. It's usually just a group of smart people celebrating their intelligence.

sort of like myself getting "Who's Who among students" 4 out of my 5 in HS (just kidding), but I did get letters every year saying I was accepted even though I never entered anything. They just put my name in a book.

If it is anything like Golden Key you get accepted by a preprogrammed sweep of your academic transcript. They get access to everyones records pick the top 10% and send you a letter. I wouldn't bother joining as it will not give you anything and will just take time away from your studies so you can sell cookies to send members to international conferences.

I looked at it. There are no required fees or annual dues. However, I saw something about fees for online memberships. Maybe not a big deal because organizations need to get money somehow. The page where you sign up also has a clickable security tag that validates them as authentic, for what it's worth.

Personally, I probably would just throw the junkmail away and not worry about it. The only benefit that I can see for a group like this is to have something extra to throw on your resume and future job applications. Your previous work experience, relevant skills, and GPA are probably enough though.
