What would it take to get you on IRC?

Many people, myself included, idle in IRC channels and only chat when free time allows.

I have Trillian configured to automatically load the channels every time I start up. It only opens up three new windows (one for #toj, one for #toj-cs, one for #cga) and doesn't have any significant impact on system resources.

If you don't use Trillian, you can find a standalone IRC client like mIRC.

I just wanted to stress that idling in #cga doesn't mean that you have to chat all the time.

Yeah, I have Trillian... I'll look at loading it.

I have too many people who IM me regardless of my status and it tends to pull me out of games...

But I am resolving to be more active as for now this community is the only church I'm able to attend.


Nice to meet you by the way. As I only play Guild Wars I kept thinking you were "Pastori." Finally figured it out now that I'm pushing myself to become a forum monkey.

Trillian 3.x (Basic and Pro)
  • Go to Trillian > Trillian Preferences > Message Windows
  • Under "When a new message window is created..." select "Hide the window and notify me"
I forget how to do it in Trillian 0.74i or Trillian Pro 2.x.

I think I should save this basic guide to a HTML file and just refer to it any time someone tells me they don't leave Trillian running while they play games because new messages kick them out. Or I could just reference my last post.

So, back to the topic at hand, what else keeps community members from idling our IRC channel?

I grew up in chat rooms, so I might even be useful.... er... something.

Go to Tools > Options > Servers > Under "IRC Network," select "GameSurge" > Under "IRC Server," select "GameSurge: Random US Server" > Click "Connect to Server"

Once you're on the server, go to Commands > Join channel > type in #cga and press enter.

To change your nick in channel, type "/nick WhateverYouWant" (minus the quotes) in the channel.

Oh, My Goodness. Thank you so much, I didn't even think about trying to fix that!! I have that problem all the time, which is why I'm on aim so little of the time.

mIRC allows you to connect to multiple servers, so you can idle in your current channels and join GameSurge to idle in #cga.
 
I have no problem idiling, I will add mIRC to startup. See you there ^_^.


P.S. I think Xfire is the worst [popular] IM client ever in existence, but I still use it to correspond w/ folks who wont give it up.
 
So there are about 5 users max in the channel at any given time. If your having trouble figuring it out, read this guide. I wrote this for the Bersirc IRC Client - Powerful Simple Free. The logo says it all.

  • It's available under the GNU License, so it's free.
  • It's very simple to use.
  • It's lightweight. (173KB, 1.2MB memory consumption)

I don't like Trillians IRC client, actually I just don't like Trillian all together. I use Miranda IM, which can have IRC capability using ad-ons, but I prefer a stand-alone client. I use mIRC, but it cost me $15 for a copy, this here is free.

Go to their webpage for the latest version. Download and Install it.

Enter your personal info. Make sure to click add when you enter your nick. Click Save Identity.

Click File, then Auto Connect.

Enter in the info I have in the picture. You don't have to add them all, if you only want to be in #cga, just put #cga. Separate using commas, but no spaces. Click Save.

Now just close out of Bersirc and reopen it using the icon on your desktop. It should put you right in #cga. A few things I noticed that Bersirc lacks:

  • There's no Preform (other than server and channels, so you'll have to auth manually - if you need help with that pm me.)
  • It lacks the right-click menu in channels to do things like Query, Slap, Kick, etc. These things can all be done using /query <name>, /slay <name>, /kick <name>...etc. For more commands, HydraIRC has this nice wiki entry.
  • It doesn't auto-start with windows. To fix this, Click Start > All Programs > Bersirc. Right click and drag the icon to the Startup folder. The statup folder is in the list under All Programs. You'll probably find it near the top left side.

Dial-up'ers have no reason to complain. It takes less than a minute to download and requires little traffic. Here's a capture of network utilization

0.06KB in 3 minutes. I had dial-up at one point and noticed no difference in ping/lag running IRC (Trillian is probably another story).

I just don't see a reason why I would want to use irc when I regularly use Xfire and Teamspeak. Is there one?

IRC wont bite. Besides, there is an IRC channel for just about anything.
(ex. #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net). It's a terrific way to get help with certain things.
 
Are we still on GameSurge? The entire UT community is on EnterTheGame, so if we have a channel on ETG I'll idle it, like I do for LOB's channels (#lob and #lob1v1).
