DLink?
Linksys?
SMC?
NetGear?

Primarily, if no one can answer here, I will get a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router With SpeedBooster (WRT54GS-CA).

My current router, SMC 2804WBR-CA 2.4GHz 54Mbps Wireless Broadband Router has giving me problems. Which, frankly, is very annoying, period.

Can that Linksys above work with laptops and a wireless video game system with the encryption enabled, YES or NO?

http://www.cgalliance.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10907

TO explain; sometimes, my own cable modem completely shuts off, which, SHOULD NOT BE DOING THAT! The cable modem is connected to the SMC router which is connected to wired PC's and wireless usages such as Laptops and my Playstation 2. I can not put in an encryption without having the wireless stuff, unusable(wireless encryption = dead wireless stuff).

When I connect the modem directly to my PC, no shut off/shutdowns, not bad lag, no problems!

When I connect the modem to the router, occasional shut off/shutdowns, unexplainable/erratic lag, and serious problems!

I really hope that Linksys, does not have this problem which I am calmly speaking/saying/typing.

Facts:

I've been trying to get into a AoE2 game night for almost a month. Just recently, Talon, tried to help me with the issues I get for just trying to get into a AoE2 internet game. 3-4 hours later(of conversations and ideas), the router was the issue, since using the modem directly to my PC made the AoE2 internet game to work, the router did not!

Recently, I've been told alot of you that I lag, I've explained, "Your server is on the east, I'm from the west." However, having a 24-10 score at the end with 600+ ping(which stalls the game), thats dumb! And even on a east server, I should be getting 100-150 ping like I did a couple years ago!

there is none, if your playing games i suggest not to go wireless

It has 4 ports which can connect 4 PC's wired. Currently, 3 PC's(Including mine) are connected into the SMC router with wired not wireless. Wireless Routers are both wired and wireless.

I had to make my Playstation 2 wireless because from my Playstation 2 system to the router, it is 65 feet long. Besides, it may of costed $150(on sale), but its well worth it(Btw, I didn't buy it, it was a present).

I am not using wireless with my PC or any of the others since I would need a Wireless Ethernet Card which would cost me $100 per PC, waste of money. I am looking for the best wireless routers(its wired & wireless) since wired routers(with no wireless) are usuable with the people that own laptops in my home that need the wireless router for their stuff and we need it since it has 4-ports for wired internet, especially me!

Go to bestbuy and talk to the geek squad guys, they know their stuff. And this friday/sat/sun is the grand opening of best buy in surrey, so if u line up early u have a chance to win 500$ giftcard, which means free router.
But I think someone else on the forums had saidif your networking buy all your components from the same brand name. I don't know if thats the same for wireless.

im sorry im anti geek squad, they are idiots, i was out of town and my friend was having troubles with his usb, i trouble shooted long distance and figuired that windows xp screwed up so i told him when i got back i would reload xp and save all his files. his dad is like uber-anxious to make sure everything works without waiting went to geek squad and they said they would find some simple fix and save his files. they just re-formatted it without backing anything up and charged him for it. later my friends dad started yelling at the geek squad guys (ex-navy officer = scary) and they were ignorant. so yeah. anyways your going to be looking at a lynksys or a netgear. ive noticed that netgear has more warranty stuff than lynksys but essentially their equal in my opinion

Geek Squad's #1 answer to "why won't Internet Explorer start" is "reinstall Windows XP!". Seriously -- I went to Best Lie for something on a non-busy day, and they were reloading Windows XP on four laptops simultaneously. Is it worth $60 to have your OS reloaded by someone else? Oh by the way, it's $230 if you want them to come to your home and do it. Plus, you have to actually own the OS, which, if it's an upgrade, is another $100+. *rolleyes*

=D

ok geek sqard all they tell you to do it re-format your harddrive or wipe it evan for little thing never ever talk to them

Geek Squad technicians are not required to be CompTIA A+ Certified. A+ certification is a basic requirement for almost all PC Technician jobs. Rather than share my own personal views on Geek Squad and Best Buy, I'll leave you with those facts.

Geek squad aside. I'm anti-linksys. Go with Netgear, I can dig up a couple of posts I've made on issues I've had with linksys products (and my brother has the same problems so it's not just one faulty piece of hardware). Lets just say they're absolutely terrible for gaming. Netgear feels just as fast as being wired (and 8 mb/s faster if you get the 108 mb/s card and router).

(and 8 mb/s faster if you get the 108 mb/s card and router).

That could be the reason why its this slow with the SMC router(with Shaw Cable's SurfModem). -_-

I don't see that here.

NetGear

Linksys

However, NetGear looks faster than Linksys.

In relations to Geek Squad, I trust 2 people, and 1 community.

1st, my friend, which thankfully did an awesome work for my spray in Counter-Strike.

2nd, my father, which has been a computer technician since I was born.

3rd, this community, CGA, which everyone has their own talents.

In regards to this thread; don't change the subject, or I will be forced to get an admin to close this thread and make my decisions based on the previous postings.

We recently used Geek Squad to find out why it's freezing up and they said it was spyware....which it wasn't....sold us another spyware program which is not even as good as Ad-aware (another story)...paid them to clean the puter (inside and out). Picked it up this week and it's still freezing...oh and the puter is dirty (inside and out). Needless to say my dh (darling husband) is not a happy camper.

Oh, and do you know they want to start wearing capes year round??

We have a DLink router and have had no problems with it. And, one puter has a Lynksys card! LOL

if your comps freezing alot, just make a back up and format the comp.
Its usually good to do it atleast once every 2 years.

I wont need a new router after all. I finally got the encryption to work from the wired PC's, my wireless PS2, to my sis wireless Apple(Macintosh).
Having a Shaw Technician to come over this Wednesday, we hope they will give us a signal enhancer or something to boast our "weak" signal.
