Well, I did some research. This isn't quoted verbatim, you see, it's my understanding of the subject. So, it oversimplifies massively as a price for being understandable by someone like me!

No one place. Astrophysics sites, a documentary series by the BBC and a few books that touch on the science of these phenomena.

Try the APOD site... I don't know the addy, but you can search for Astronomy Picture a Day...
 
It's called SPACE, I believe - had Sam Neil as front man. It's a little opinionated, but it involved some nice graphics, and brought a few things together in a nice simple package. It is a little simplistic, but it gives one a grounding.

No, it's a series, they just paid Sam Neil to front it. I believe you can buy the whole thing on a single DVD. It provides an interesting place to start from, and managed to explain the formation and behaviour of a blackhole to my simple earth brain in such a way that I grasped it readily.

It could just have done with more hard science and less shock science! ;)
