What does Jesus say about marriage?

In the old testament, polygyny was common. In the new testament, Paul tells us not to marry if we can help it. I know the reason for the ladder, but I would like a reputable resource to explain things more completely.
 
No, Paul's message was in reference to the intense torture and murder of Christians under the reign of Emperor Nero. Nero made it his goal to kill as many Christians as possible.
 
During my years in school for my degree in youth ministry, we were required to read a particular book as part of our curriculum for understanding what the Word says about marriage. Here's a link to that book.
