What does Blizzard do for you?

All these claims about Blizzard always being jerks and doing stuff that only hurts us from WoW forums to Guild forums, well here's blizzard helping us a bit:

PC Gamer, September addition, talked with a Gold Farming company and got some inside info about the buisness and what it's all about. Apparently these people have cubicles that they work in all day, then these wooden bunks with small mattresses that they sleep on at night, so basically they live at their job, and their job is WoW.

Now a lot of us believe that gold farmers ruin the economy in this game, and a lot of us very much dislike the idea of us working so hard for our gold then others with better financial situations just going online and buying twice as much as we earned with absolutely no effort. Blizzard seems to believe this too, for they are trying to help us with that situation.

The company that PC Gamer interviewed gave them some statistics on account numbers and such, and one of the Presidents of the company said that Blizzard has shut down over 300,000 accounts that have been linked to chinese farms, take that number and multiply by 15 and you have how much money Blizzard has lost per month on all those accounts.

Now i'm not saying that Blizzard still isn't making a lot of cash, but they are making good sized dents in their income to try and assure us a good and fun game that is "fair."

Even though a lot of the problems we don't like havn't been fixed, they are working hard to make sure that we are having a great time, without farmers to ruin an aspect of the game for us.

*Dictionary of Proe* Farmer: Person who makes a living off of making gold. (Not a casual or hardcore gamer)

Just wanted to give Blizzard a little thumbs up with all the negativity towards them that still rears it's head once in awhile, so hope you enjoyed my post. (My first one ever that's longer than 1 sentence!)
 
To be fair, they've probably only shut down 10,000 or so accounts (perhaps only a few thousand?) of people who re-register over and over... It's still a significant amount of money.

Of course when you consider that if the game economics goes sour, Blizz ends up losing a TON of money in canceled subs, it's not them looking out for us but for their bottom line.

It's all about economics, and as people who are paying to have fun, we win in the end... but it's still all about economics.
 
The gold farming circuit seems circular. For example:

Employee X of Gold r Us finds a Uber epic Y and places on AH for 2k gold. Player Z wants uber epic Y so they go to Gold Sellers (competition of Gold r Us) and buys 2k gold. Then goes and buys uber epic Y. Gold R Us now sells that gold to Player A, who wants to buy Uber epic B that was found and placed on AH for 2k by Employee C of Gold Sellers.

I also have heard from some dedicated raiders that they too go and buy a few hundred in gold because they don't have the time to farm gold for their repairs and raiding reagents.

One thing i asked them to do i even saided i would pay for a toon Race change................ it should not be that hard............ But yes we are talking about blizz here
 
As far as I can see it atm, if Blizzard is doing sumthing (even if it is to save their own hides) but it still makes our game more enjoyable then i'm happy.
Also the 300,000 accounts shut down was just a number that I read in PC Gamer from the gold farming company.
 
Oh, I'm not unhappy with Blizzard! And I'm not unhappy with farmers or people who buy from farmers. I do agree with Blizzard that excessive farming destroys a game's economy because of the huge inflation caused by those who can push a button for more gold (by buying it). I just think Blizzard is shutting down accounts to preserve the game (and future profits) not for any altruistic reason.

And Proe -- those numbers are about the same that I've heard. You just have to remember that if they shut down 300,000 accounts, the majority of them are repeat farming accounts. If there are 10,000 farming accounts that all get shut down regularly, you'll get up to the 300,000 number pretty fast. The key is that Blizzard wouldn't be making 300,000 x 15, it's only the smaller 10,000 x 15 per month. In essence, they actually don't lose a cent from shutting down farming accounts because the farmers will just buy new accounts and keep going.

The thing about farmers that bugs me is why they actually do it.

A lot of them are trying to earn their way into college, support their family, or simply to earn a living by means they can tolerate. Not everyone in the world is as fortunate as the United States and Canada to view computer games as, well, "games." Some people have to find loopholes and cracks in everything that has any potential of money to survive, even if that means a crime as large as ruining the utopian World of Warcraft.

The big picture isn't so pretty. More depressing, isn't it?
