[Weekly - Su/M] What did you learn/teach at church?

Reminds me of some of what I taught on Sunday in the message. Was on prayer and opened with the ultimate "Sinner's Prayer",

  1. Luke 18:13 New King James Version (NKJV)
13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’

This week, one of our pastors spoke on Ephesian Als 5:12-21:

12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

The pastor spent some time discussing whether or not Christians should give alcohol. He didn't give a hard, fast rule, but did encourage others to ask "Is this profitable?" and "Will this lead someone closer to Christ?" rather than, "Am I allowed to do this?" Alcohol remains a controversial subject in many churches and I felt he did a great job teaching on the subject, focusing on Biblical truth rather than human mandates.

Yesterday, one of our pastors taught on Ephesians 6:5-9:

5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.

The pastor emphasized and expounded the phrase "as to the Lord" and challenged the congregation by reminding us that Scripture does not afford followers of Christ the option of separating our lives in to sacred and secular compartments. We are called to glorify God in all places at all times and that includes our vocation.

@Ember and I worked in the children's area this morning, so we missed the sermon. (All parents are enlisted to help once or twice every quarter. Our number was up this morning.) The podcast should be up some time later this week.

What did everyone else learn about and/or teach about today at church?

Our pastor taught on Ephesians 6:18-24:

18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

21 So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. 22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.

23 Peace be to the brothers,[a] and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.
The pastor reminded us that we are no less dependent on Christ today than we were the day He redeemed us. God is the one who enables us to be bold and useful in ministry.

Yesterday morning was our church's Christmas music production with a brief and concise presentation of the Gospel. The teaching pastor spoke regarding how we are "incompatible with eternal life" and it is only by a miracle of God that we are reborn spiritually.

@Hescominsoon thanks so much for posting that!

I want to say more but no words are really necessary other than thank you for posting :)

Church services were canceled today due to inclement weather. :(

we were out of town for Christmas and went driving looking for a church. We found one but it was ending within 10minutes so we didn't go in >.>

I can share my blessed Christmas Eve service here. I was a long way from home and trying find a church to go to with my son, who moved months ago and still hasn't found a church. We found a small 12-14 member, kinda, sorta, at least affiliated with Baptist church. We attended the service Sunday before Christmas Eve, then decided to go to their Christmas Eve candle light service and our son promised to go. Just as we were getting started a young teen who was fostered by one of the attendees started having a break down at the altar. The whole church gathered around to pray with him, and when the pastor took him back to continue to work with him, we went into a hymn sing before the Candle Light service was continued. I realized this was a blessing, seeing clearly this is why Christ came, living and dying, to heal the wounded, and broken, to give life to mankind, and to make us like Him to be His hands and feet to carry out that work.

Our pastor taught on the purpose and importance of intercessory prayer from Ephesians 6:18. Good stuff!

We are reteaching our membership 301 class right now as a part of the sunday sermons for better recording quality. Looking at how God made you and ways to discover your strengths in ministry and to be "Activate" in what God has for you.

We stayed home with 2 sick kiddos Sunday morning, but we watched our church's livestream. Our pastor taught on Matthew 26:28 and the new covenant between God and His people.

Another Sunday, another morning home sick. :( This time, it was just me and the younger child. @Ember and our older daughter made it to church. I did watch the livestream, though.

Our pastor taught on Matthew 26:29-31 and taught about how Jesus worshiped even in the hours leading up to his betrayal and arrest. Our pastor also delivered a warning that we may not be as spiritually strong as we think and should take care not to overestimate ourselves. We are as dependent on Christ for sanctification and glorification as we were for justification.

Our pastor taught on Matthew 26:36-39 as part of a series leading up to Easter.

He focused on Christ's suffering in the garden of Gethsemane and lessons we can learn from Jesus in the hours before he was betrayed.

not quite church but we did go to a marriage retreat this weekend. and It was pretty exceptional.

One thing they did was have other married people talk about their marriages and trials and tribulations and how those tribulations shaped what "love" really is in their marriage.

One of the good conversations that came out of it with my wife was taking the time to verbalize our realization of how lonely we are as young marrieds, me especially. I'm pretty excited and grateful that the discord channel is getting more usage so that I can actually have adults to talk to T_T

But not only adults since there are adults at our church. But for the most part, we're the only couple in our age group that actively has video game consoles, or even work in tech heavy industry and big into the tech culture that is here.

Or heck even watch anime and know what it is.

So i am very grateful for the community here and actually even more thankful for the stages of life that we are in as a community.

Our pastors have started a series on the "one another" commands of the New Testament. The series is off to a strong (and challenging) start and I'm looking forward to next week!
