Video Card Issue

I acquired a new video card: a GeForce 6800, 128 MB. Unfortunately, when I try running most 3D games, the screen goes blank, the sound stutters a little bit, and then just hangs. No keyboard response, no nothing. I have to unplug it to get it to turn off.

I've tried quite a few games (Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, UT2004 demo, Company of Heroes demo, etc.) and the issue still occurs. Sometimes it takes few minutes before it happens, sometimes it's just a few seconds. Haven't tried CS 1.6 yet, tho.

I've tried leaving the case open, but no luck. The power connector into the card is snug. I've tried many driver versions, both new and old (several driver versions... ranging from 4x.xx to the latest). No dice.

So, I'm turning to you: the people that know more about this stuff than I do. ^^

Also, please refrain from laughing at me because I'm running Windows, and then derail the thread. Yeah, you know who you are. :D

The system is a 2.08 Athlon XP with 1 GB RAM (not sure what type/speed). Sound is integrated, if it makes a difference.

The drivers I currently have loaded are 84.21. The DirectX version is9.0c (4.09.0000.0904).

I believe I have a 400 watt power supply. The power supply itself doesn't have any markings on it whatever the wattage is, but I'm almost positive it's 400 watts.

Hm. Well, the power supply came with the case (Rosewill), so I imagine it's probably near the end of its course.

What alternative power supplies do you recommend? I want to buy a quality power supply, but I definitely want to avoid spending more than I have to on it.

Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake, and pc power and cooling are on my list of trusted manufacturers. I usually avoid antec and thermaltake tho, but occasionally I have a chepo project that requires usage of an included ps.

Never skimp on the motherboard or psu, those always bite you.

I used to have a computer like that. :D

I would think it is your PSU, I was shocked when my PSU was 250 Watt and my video card required 300+. Which generated a lot of heat, mine has gone up to 67'C!

If you are planning to upgrade your video card, might as well get a 600 Watt, if not, 400 - 500 is good enough for your 128MB video card.

You could use this program, to check up with your voltages on your PC. I have it all the time, to check if my new computer is overheating.

Generally you dont have to check everyday the temps. I didnt when I had my proc oc'd from 1.8 to 2.7. It is best to just write down the idle temps every month, generally thermal paste wont need to be reset/reapplied but once every few years. Unless you do something weird, like throw your computer around or reguarly transport it, their is little nead to have a constant eye on the temps.

Sounds good, thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably buy it off Amazon (because of free 2-day shipping + 4.08% off + ~$5 less than Newegg) sometime soon, and I'll be sure to keep this thread updated with the progress.

That's a good PSU. It's the one I'm using in my main system. I especially like the wrapped cables.

What specific card do you have? Can you find a link to the specs online?
