Veteran status idea

I think it is a misnomer. And I do not mean to discredit anyone having attained or aspiring to attain that status, nor to those who came up with that title. I like the term Raider better. But hey - what's a name? I guess any ol' tag would do. It is the substance behind the name and we have great substance there. However, I see the word veteran associated with something else besides what our veterans are - and the title should more appropriately address the substance. Our present veterans are more like our special forces.

A veteran, basically, is someone who has served or been around a while. Like the military, all who have served are called veterans once they have experienced a lot or just did their time and got out. That is in no way a disrespectful remark against veterans - I am one who never faced combat, although I did help save lives literally in an operating room and helped patch up a few combat vets. And there are veterans who never had to do much of anything dangerous, bold, or noble. Some just turned a wrench. However, my son (a combat disabled veteran) stated what it means to have served when he wrote in his Facebook status today: "A Veteran is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States of America for an amount up to, and including, their life. That is an honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer remember that fact." That statement shook me to the bone because that was MY son and the price filled on his check was high!

So could we please consider a name change for our current members who are focused on breaking new paths for us as a guild, on the cutting edge of our advancement in the game as a guild? Like I said, they are our special forces and need a title more befitting their status whether as Raiders, Rangers, Pathfinders, or whatever... Veteran just does not seem to fit right as to what the term means to me. And I am quite serious - it is not just a fleeting thought, nor do I expect this to be pushed aside.

And yes, this is very subjective and I know there are other aspects to the word veteran. But I would like to stir up some meaningful, well thought conversation and action on my way idea.

Keep it serious, please, and polite!

If I may, being that the term was put into place by me:

The term was used because of the primary definition: "A person who is long experienced or practiced in an activity or capacity"

It was also at the time where we had a raider status as well. I took very serious the title and thought long and hard over all the options, all the officers did at the time. It was an honor to carry that title and I think it still is. It is fine if they change it, but I also believe it is an honor to be one in the guild, maybe not as much as a armed forces vet.

I see your reasoning and think you have great points, but in no way are we insulting or demeaning a title at all.

I always figured it was used because we use mostly the default nomenclature. I.E.: Probation, Member, Veteran, Officer...aren't those just the default settings?

EDIT: And now I read Mordos' post and feel silly.

As I looked through varying definitions I see over and over again the term to mean experienced soldier.

I personally cannot think of any term more fitting to designate those who fight against the evil forces of Lich King and have prevailed on many occasions than the term veteran since we go to battle constantly.

I think the key to the meaning of the word is experienced in battle.

My father and my grandfather are both veterans and I do not see how this belittles their service in any way.

Also I know that we do not apply the term veteran to simply soldiers serving in the military it has a near universal meaning of experienced. You hear people say things such as - our veteran newscaster - or a veteran pastor - neither of those imply anything but experience.

I think in this case that finding veteran inappropriate is highly subjective and therefore very difficult to justify a change.

This of course has nothing to do with you Sambeau because you are just an awesome guy - but ideas or opinions will collide sometimes.

Sam, I love you, your awesome and I so much appreciate your good humor and everything you bring to this guild, your a blessing to many. I do disagree with you on this though, but I respect your opinion and understand your concern. I do think the word veteran is fine using it for our capacity.

Also, if anyone would like to become a veteran, the process is to first talk to your class leader about what it takes. Class leaders are listed here http://www.cgalliance.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33433
If your not making any headway with your class leader, feel free to talk to any guild leaders.

Remember, becoming a Redeemed Veteran is more then about just performance, it is also about going above and beyond in your service to this guild.

Take out the idea of Raiding altogether from the Veteran title. What would be left is someone who represents the guild, our values, our community, and is a great example of all these things. They're some one you can trust because they are sold out to Redeemed ideals. Just like a military Veteran with what they represent - they consider it an honor to be part of an organization greater than themselves. That's what this title has always meant to me. And that is what our Veterans represent as well.

You can spot a Veteran because they are always wearing more than the minimum amount of flair. True story.

lol azami.

I remember when Vet status was started. I will admit that at the onset I was quite leery of it for fear that it would cause a rift in the guild between people who are considered "Vets" and others who are not.

But now that I have been in the guild two separate times (I get a before and after shot, so to speak) I don't think neither the name is a bad thing, nor the logic behind the status. I think the intention behind it was to promote raiding and nothing more.

Also, it is congruent with the dictionary definition. :)

Now that is what I call discussion...except for the seizure! And that is what I wanted to understand: the reasoning behind it. Not developing a rift! Now I see your reasoning and understand it, I accept it! Thanks for the courage it takes to discuss this with me in such a kindly manner. I hope I did encourage some serious thinking because I did.

Yep, we have really spectacular, exceptional gamers and people of substance in our Veterans. As I have said, we have great leadership. We are blessed as a group of people who enjoy this hobby of online gaming together in a very Christ-influenced atmosphere.

I was not and am not excluding any definition of veteran that has been addressed. My thinking was to see something a little different. But as I said, what's in a name is not as important as what is behind it and the substance of what is named. Nor do I see our guild terminology in any way as an affront to our military veterans who have offered all to protect those we love and our freedoms. My thinking was to see the term spiffed up a little.

Please understand this, however. This was not an attack on anything and if you took that way, please accept my apology. And you can file me off in the corner of crazy cause sometimes I really do function at about 50% of mental capability! LOL!

Ya'll rock! And I will continue to check back for more!

And who knows - I may just go for that position myself sometime, but not just yet. I do not think my slow learning curve and keyboard skills have caught up with that just yet. Now it it connotated PVP, I would fall all over myself to get that status! LOL!
