To Game or Not To Game

Hey Y'all. This has probably been talked to death in more than once, but I'm trying to decide on whether or not to continue playing WoW.

Currently, I'm off for my college semester. However, once break rolls around (and eventually, graduation). I'm not sure whether to come back or not.

What's your opinion on this? What makes WoW (or any MMO) worth paying for?

Personally I cannot stand WoW, and think it is a rather boring MMORPG... But...I am not the best person to take advice from if you like WoW...because I am a "veteran" MMORPG gamer (12 years in)...and thought and still think WoW is FTL...

Mainly, the community. You could have an awesome game, but with no one to play, it gets boring real quick. I would say enjoy your break, don't get tied down in MMOs until you'll have a more stable timeframe to play. No use getting back into the groove of things to just quit it when school comes around.

Personally, I just left for my first year in college and I'm the leader of the Guild Wars Spirit of Elijah guild, and I debated back and forth between stepping down from the leadership position and quitting altogether and continue playing it. But now that I'm here, I feel like I can continue serving in this capacity and continue playing GW, even through college, albeit less than I normally would have played before. So my advice is: wait until you get there. You'll cross that bridge when you get there. Maybe you want to cross the bridge and continue playing or maybe you feel like you can turn away and walk down the yellow brick road.

For me, the number one thing that makes an MMO worth paying for is the community and/or friends you know playing it and how much fun you have playing. The reason I play WoW for a few months every year is simply because most of my friends play it and I like to hit up all the new stuff (seriously looking forward to Cataclysm...) that usually comes out when I can't afford the sub.

If you enjoy it enough that you think the monthly sub is worth it, I see no reason not to continue playing once you have the time to take it up again whenever that may be.

As a 5-year WoW player who loves it, let me give you this advice: make sure that your WoW time never interferes with your schoolwork. Unless you're planning on building MMOs for a living, it's not worth it to get a lesser grade because you played too much WoW.

WoW costs 15$ a month. Depending on what college you go to, it can cost you between 1000$ and 5000$ a month. Keep that in mind :)

If you are about the community keep playing WoW until your college community comes together. The first few months can be very lonely.

WoW at $15 bucks a month is 50 cents a day. Pretty good value for entertainment.

If it is gaming you enjoy. Then there are many free to play MMO's with comparable game play to WoW (I played WOW for 3 years but no longer play, I think they have made it too easy).

Yeah, I do like the community I discovered. But it sucks playing alone. I'm still debating on playing as I don't really do much over break.

I definitely won't be playing over the semester. I wish I could find a gaming job, but I have little to no experience (nor any foreseeable ability of getting into one).

Money is definitely a concern for me, thus I'm debating on whether to come to WoW or go to SW:TOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic) once it comes out.

Ever think about Guild Wars? It is free to play, and you don't have to invest a massive amount of time to have fun.

Shameless plug, go!

I agree, though. Guild Wars is a lot of fun, and you only have to pay for it once (you can even get the Trilogy for $20 via OffGamers). Also a bunch of people around here play it. Could be worth checking out. May not be what you want (it's definitely not the same game as WoW, but I actually like it more), but won't know unless you give it a shot.
