This website is evil. (Spokeo)

Incoming copy pasta:

I just found out about a website from a friend of mine called Spokeo.com. It's a "phonebook" that lists your credit information, address, family information, links to photos you put on social networking sites and who knows what else. You may want to go delete the profile. Search for yourself and copy the URL of your listing. Then go to the privacy button at the bottom of the page and remove it.

This is very interesting... someone in my group in my Management class showed that to me.

The information hit or miss it seems. My household apparently has $1M+ in income and lives in a $400k-$600 townhouse.

Also, my mother had no children (which is not exactly accurate...) and I have 2 kids (not accurate either).

Also, my group mate only found me after they sifted through 3000 other me's. :)

Seems that the older and more financially active you are e.g.: Taking loans for cars, houses, extensive banking, etc., the more accurate it is. So, for us college kids, it might not be so scary right now...but the thought still irks me.

Its inaccuracies make it laughable. Any of the three major credit reporting agencies know and have far more - and it is usually accurate. And what the government has on you via the IRS makes this look like small potatoes.

I think most of it comes from public records. My dad is a self employed dentist who owns his own home, two cars, bought cars for both my sister and myself and is a big investor. His home and business property are both very valuable. The information that they have (had) on his profile was scary accurate. They knew that he plays golf, owns a cat, a dog and a lot of other stuff was dead on.

My profile on the other hand was waaaaaaaaay off. I have a credit card, a checking and savings account, I'm enrolled in grad school, have my own apartment and...that's about it other than being registered to vote and on facebook.

Thanks for the heads up. Our information was eerily accurate as well. Wife & I are both deleted now. For married women, remember to look under your maiden name, as well. My wife was still listed.

All the same, I don't like ANY company offering to sell my information. Especially when I don't deal with any markerters or such. And the fact that they are pulling photo's of me off another site without my consent raises some legal questions. The website, however inacurate, is a major invasion of privacy. And looking at the subscription pricing, it wouldn't be to hard for people to get information on whoever.

Also, deleted mine. The rest was creepy accurate.

Wife & I are both deleted now.

How did you two go about deleting your information? I looked myself up again, and while most of my information was WAY off, I still don't like it being out there. While I was on my page, I didn't see where I could delete myself from their site.

Goodwone wants to know too. :D

Thanks!
