Thinking of getting GW...

I'm thinking of purchasing Guild Wars, but I want to know what this game is like from a Christian's perspective. Is there a heavy lean toward magic? Do the females need more clothing? Is there a swear filter? etc. etc.

And then, also, post a couple reasons why you enjoy Guild Wars. :)

I hope to see you soon! ^^

whoa. the great sirThom (ala CCGR)
hey, how's it going?

the game does lean a good deal on magic. Some magic hails to the ingame gods and some is just your standard "fireball." Many of the skills, however, are just stuff like "Savage Slash" or "Dust Trap." You can avoid a good deal of magic if you decide to be, say, a Warrior/Assassin.

as for clothing, some are scantily clad(aka the elementalist in nightfall or the scarred patterns for the necromancer) but others cover up nicely.
yes, there is a swear filter.

I personally have no problem with the thing in Guild Wars, but that's me and other christians might have issues.

reasons I enjoy GW?
well, for one, no monthly fee.
gameplay is more skill based and alot depends on the strategy on how you build your character and how you use it. focuses more on combat and how you fight then necessarily the roleplaying part of the games.
Less time consuming that most MMORPGs, no spending hours running from one place to another. Seems to play more like a single player game (mission wise) with an mmorpg basis.

I'd say over half the game is magic...

A lot of the female characters could use plenty more clothing, but that's mainly with the elementalist (and a certain necromancer scar pattern...)

I'm not too good with reviewing things when I'm this tired so just look at the CCGR review of Guild Wars (I think Archy wrote it)

Guild Wars can be best described as a cross between the real-time action of a game like WarCraft 3 and Diablo with a framework of player customizability in the vein of Magic: The Gathering.

In a nutshell, a real-time, action-oriented, monster bashing, online multiplayer version of Magic: The Gathering.

Unlike most fantasy role-playing games that has your character "naturally" gradually increasing in power from a farm boy to a superhuman being capable of levelling cities, Guild Wars instead relies on player skill.

You must selectively choose the skills (spells/abilities/special attacks) that you want to use at any given time (like choosing your cards in a game like Magic: The Gathering or Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh). Your collection of skills is much larger than the ones you can bring with you into adventures, which means there is skill in choosing the right skills.

Then, when playing the game, you must be skilled in actually using the skills (!) you chose... again, very much like a trading card game... you have to know how to use what's in your deck. Add to that the real-time strategy reaction skills needed to be good in those kinds of games.

Guild Wars isn't a hard game, but it has an incredible amount of depth. If you like games that have some "meat" to them, and that is challenging to get really good at, then Guild Wars is the kind of game you would like.

Regarding magic... it is a major focus in the game. And the game includes gods and demons and fantasy monsters. One of the character professions is that of the Necromancer, which deals with death and corpses and hints of vampirism and such. Elementalists wield magic that controls the elements of fire, air, and water. Rangers and Ritualists deal with the spirit realm, including "binding" spirits to do their will. The only non-magic/non-spiritual professions are the Warrior and Assassin.

Also, this is a "fantasy role playing game", so is very violent (not gory, but nearly 100% combat). The whole "point" of the game is to kill things (and other player characters)... just like 100% of the fantasy role-playing games out there.

If these things are objectionable to you, and feel they would hinder your spiritual life, then it might be best avoided.

I have a "Play Now" key from my preorder pack for GW:Nightfall that will give you a 10hr or 14day (Whichever comes first) trial of both of the first 2 chapters. You are welcome to it if you would like to try it out before buying. I think you can even keep any characters you start by applying a retail key to the account you create if you choose to do so. Let me know if you are interested and I'll PM you the key. The client can be downloaded from www.guildwars.com.

well...

1. what non-Christian based game will have females with scant clothing? Im sry but its our society, you cant really run away from it. But Guild Wars isnt that bad.

2. Chat Filter: Yes. But as on all online games people will find ways to get around that so ur always gonna have some guy running around acting like a heathen.

3. Magic = Yes. There are even different Gods that are referenced. Nightfall especially but there is no "religion".

4. Guild Wars Pwns. Why you may ask. CAUSE IM HERE :p. ok really its a great way to hang out with people you have no clue who they are. You get to brag about how uber you are or you can just ease back and play it like a RPG. AND, its free. (cant beat that too much).

Now that i have given the true points about GW, (even if they are bad) i can only say one thing. Guild Wars is an awsome game. This Guild/Alliance makes it twice as good. There is nothing (almost) that i wouldnt do you these people. Really its not the game its the people.

PS. you can also ignore/turn off public chat for those special people who are immature.
