The search for a new computer desk

I've begun my search for a new computer desk, which I plan to install in my bedroom. I'll try to remember to measure the space where I plan to put the desk later tonight, but even a few minutes of research shows that the options that would be most comfortable are out of my price range.

I did find this guide for building a desk that looked very much like what I'd want, but even the materials were ~$350 and I very likely don't have the tools or access to the tools I would need.

I'm hoping to find a desk with a flat top (no hutch) for a 23-24" monitor, space (whether empty or a stand) for a tall tower (still rockin' my PC case from 2002 because I haven't found anything I like better), and--here's the challenge--a very wide keyboard/mouse tray (probably my favorite part of the desk pictured in the link above).

Any recommendations?

I haven't set a budget yet, but I know desks like the OneLessDesk are way, way out of my price range. (Maybe you Mac owners with controlling interest in a top hat and monocle company can buy a $800 desk on a whim, but not me.)

EDIT: I'd <3 a desk with a keyboard/mouse try wide enough for a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite and a gaming mouse or a trackball.

IKEA I know they are not the best quality, but its hard to beat the price, Ive been rocking the same PC desk for 5 years now, and the "foil" is just starting to bubble. Which actually impressed me as my desk is in the kitchen and i eat here all the time.

Don't know if there is one near you tho..... you could always have it shipped?

I'm looking for a computer desk that I can fold into the wall (or strap to the ceiling whichever is easier).

Maybe an amoir? The one I have, which was purchased at Big Lots, has survived 3 moves and bags of abuse, and holds everything. I could even set it up to close the doors more often and hide the whole mess.

I sound to much like a braggart, but I managed to pinch a lawyer's reception desk from work. It's mammoth, and comfortably seats two computers.

It's also 9 feet long.

I've found a few desks on craigslist that look interesting, but I'm holding off calling sellers because my wife and I may look at two-person desks. Ideally, we'd have one long desk placed along the wall, with keyboard trays wide enough to fit a keyboard AND mouse, but I'm thinking we may have to assemble or build something custom to get what we want.

I bought 2 of these and found some matching doors in the clearance pile and made one 6 ft desk w/ room for 2 PC's in the center behind the doors. Total cost $48 and about 3 hours getting the doors to line up :D

I don't know why, but I HATE keyboard and mouse trays.

That said, I got my current desk at Staples in 2005 and it's still here today. Fits my 23" Samsung and would happily fit another 23" on it.

I don't remember what I paid for it, but I seriously doubt it was much more than $100.

/bump

My wife and I are back on the desk search now that my computer is fully operational and I've re-discovered how awkward it is to play first-person shooter games from a couch 10 feet away from a 46" HDTV.

On a related note: WHY is it so difficult to find a reasonably priced desk with a tray large enough to hold a keyboard AND a mouse? I have a makeshift solution at the moment (a keyboard tray that I slide out and place a longer keyboard tray on, which actually works better than it sounds) and I rather like it.

The key board tray on my amoir has room for mouse and keyboard. The only problem with an amoir is it has way too much space and every spare piece of paper, comp accessory box, extra dvds, etc. makes it's way to the amoir.

Aye, we are, unfortunately, working with rather limited dimensions. I'll try to remember to post the approximate dimensions (or ask Ember to post them) soon.

I can't remember the exact measurements, but we have approx 9 ft to fit TWO desks (or some kind of two-person setup e.g. *link*). I am finding that most of the nicer desks are 5 ft. So two of those obviously wouldn't work. I don't require as much of a desk as Tek, so while I'm gonna be girly and say they have to match, they don't have to be exactly the same...but they should at least look like they go together.

As for depth, I don't think we've measured exactly yet, but probably not more than 2.5 ft.

The footprint on the amoir is 40" wide X 19 1/2deep if you open the doors all the way add 19 1/2 inch to width. But the doors do just fine only open about 4" past 90 degrees or so. The kicker is the height 71 1/2 inches high. The keyboard tray is 25 1/4 inch X 14 1/2 inch, monitor hole is 26 1/4" wide x 19 3/4 high. Printer sits above monitor, comp sits down low on right hand side. Total of 6 cubby holes and equipment areas besides all of that. Ya would have to assemble yourself. But it is a junk collector due to all of the space. Two small racks for cds/dvds included on either end of the full width printer shelf.
