This has nothing to do with me, for once.
This is just an interesting bit of data put together by people smarter than me, who I'm not going to credit because their sources are so many and I've forgotten them anyway. However, I first heard about this on the Glenn Beck radio program (www.glennbeck.com), so I guess he gets credit. Anyhow...
I'll start out with Ezekiel 38-39. The war of Gog and Magog. God miraculously saves Israel from certain destructions at the hands of the land of Gog (the western part of Russia) and Magog (area uncertain, but to the northeast of Israel) and assorted other allies like Syria and Cush (Ethiopia). Then, the Israelites have enough fuel left over from burning the enemies weapons that they can power the country for 7 years.
This occurs sometime after Ez 37, which is the "dry bones" passage about the reformation of Israel. As we know, Israel was reinstituted as a nation in 1948. Though some would debate it, I would say that this prophecy has been fulfilled.
Fast forward to present day, and switch gears to Islam. Iranian president Amidinejab has said that Western nations will know his response to the calls for the stoppage of his nuclear programs on August 22. This date is significant because in the Islamic faith, it is the traditional date of the ascension of Mohammed from Jerusalem to Heaven to meet with Allah.
Amidinejab is a devout believer in Islamic prophecy regarding the 12th Imam. The story there is that the 12th Imam was taken by Allah into Heaven, and will return in a time of great strife to make Islam the dominant world religion. There are signs as to the coming of the 12th Imam; most of which are fairly vague. However, the final sign of his return is said to be "fire in the skies over Baghdad".
Amidinejab believes himself to be Allah's agent to bring about the apocalypse. If he has a nuke, he will probably not hesitate to use it in the hopes of the return of the 12th Imam. And, if he takes out 20,000 or so of our troops in Baghdad in the process, he's just triggered World War III.
However, here's the scariest part (as if possibly losing thousands of troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians in a nuclear holocaust isn't enough): Iran has a treaty with Russia (Gog) that insures if one is attacked, the other will come to their defense. If Iran nukes Baghdad and the US troops there, I believe Israel will nuke Tehran. Then, Russia, Syria, Iran, and possibly a few other Muslim countries would go after Israel. Russia has the nuclear weapons capability to give Israel seven years worth of power.
This sets the stage for a peacemaker, probably the EU High Representative, a position currently held by Javier Solana, to broker a deal between the Arabs and Israel. Why the EU? Three reasons come to mind that fit squarely in with Revelations:
1. The Anti-Christ will come from a revived Roman empire. I hope I don't need to draw the geographic correlation between the countries that make up the EU and the extent of the Roman Empire around 80 AD.
2. The beast with ten horns. I don't want to get into details, but "beast" in Rev can refer to "ruler", and the horns are said to represent a ten nation alliance. The military wing of the EU, created of a ten nations (the Western EU, or WEU), comes online in 2010-- about 3 1/2 years from now.
3. This military wing, the beast with ten horns in my hypothesis, was created by EU resolution 666.

I say this not to say that the world is coming to an end, or that you should live any differently than before you read this. What I am saying is that we need to be PRAYING without ceasing about the world situation, for our troops who are in danger every day, and for God to allow us as much time as possible, to delay Jesus' return, so that we can tell people about Him. Frankly, I'm only about 10% convinced of this myself, because only God knows the time of His return... but this is a way that it could happen that I could wrap my mind around. Be vigilant!
