The Redeemed Guide to Making Gold

Tek7 (Legacy)

CGA & ToJ President
Since I know at least a few guild members are struggling to scrape together the sum for their epic mount, I thought I'd create a thread for members to post ideas for making gold.

I'll start us off by quoting excerpts from the "What should I do for gold?" thread:

The following have earned me good shiney...

1. Fishing for eels or deviate fish
2. Mining (not so great anymore), I concentrate on power leveling items like iron and copper.
3. Runecloth bags
4. Mooncloth and Felcloth
5. Running instances and DE'ing or AHing items of all levels.

Idea #1:

Position one character (#1) in Stormwind at Lil Timmy's spawn point. Send #1 a few gold to start with. Log in when you're available to watch for an NPC but not focus intently on the game.

Use #1 to purchase Cat Carrier (White Kitten) from Lil Timmy as often as possible.

Position another character (#2) in Booty Bay.

Mail the Cat Carriers purchased from the #1 to #2.

Use #2 to place the Cat Carriers on neutral AHs for 20-25g each (or more).

Before Blizzard added a neutral AH to Booty Bay, I purchased and sent two White Kitten Carriers to Fjorboug, who placed them on the Gadget AH. We had to knock the price down a few times, but they eventually sold for 20g each. After the AH cut, I had 34g extra. Pretty decent profit off a 60s purchase.

Idea #2:

Help lower-level players run through instances (e.g. Deadmines, Scarlet Monastery) known for good BoE drops at that level. Create a second character specifically for extra bank space and auctions. Send a few gold to your bank character to start with, and send green and blue items to that character to place on the AH.

You're not only helping other guild members, but you're helping build your own wealth as well.

I use a bank character to sell mats and greens, and it's made me a nice sum, without the hassle of having to travel back to IF every time I want to post an auction.

Kill heredin slayers in Winter spring for Eye of Shadow, farm two and sell for 500g each and you get 1k gold! Just remember that you can't have two eyes on the same too because its unique so make sure you mail the first one ot an alt. Here's me kiting a the mobs that drop it using auto shot. So should be easy if your using more skills and what not. I farmed these guys till I got enough gold to last me a long time so I wouldn't have to farm again. The drop rate takes a while so a couple days of farming will show some result. After all you're going to be waiting for your demon in WS for three hours this will give you somethign to do.

As for farming ideas, there's the naga on the beach in Azshara. They tend to drop silver and greens quite often.

Also, depending on your server, you can have great success farming kingsblood and stranglekelp. Stranglekelp is used in a great deal of recipes, and kingsblood is always needed for the Thorium Brotherhood faction.

I just keep an eye on the price of different items that I know I can easily farm. For example with this patch Mooncloth jumped from about 8g to 20g, I had luckily been holding on to a ton of mooncloth as the price declined now when the patch came out I was able to sell it for up to 25g each at one point. Things like Eternal Essence, Illusion Dust, Enchanted Leather, Large Brilliant shards, lots of the stuff for the .5 quests is five times as expensive as a month ago, exploit that.

If you are an enchanter, bid on every single level 51-60 item under 2g and then disenchant them, 1 level 55 item for 2g can net you 3 Eternal essence that sell for 8g each. Even at the worst chance you only get one illusion dust and break even, at the high end, you make back five times your investment.

Keep an eye on the epics every so often someone will put one up for a portion of what it can be sold at, buy it back and put it back up. If you don't have much gold to start with, start small. Buy Blues when they are on the low end and sell them back.

Join instance groups when you have some spare time, things like SM Stratholme, each of those Righteous orbs sell for 50g and I’ve seen up to 8 drop a run. Now that these runs require five men instead of ten you are going to get more blues/shards from these runs.

There are many ways to make money, and many ways to waste it. When you are trying to make money don't shop for upgrades on the auction house unless it is an unbelievably good price.

My storage toon....which is above level 10 so I could so this...is an enchanter now...so i send all my loot I don't need from my other toons to her so she can DE and then I sell the mats. I make most of my money off eels and potions at this point though. Also a new thing I found is that a stack of Ungoro crystals sells for 2.5g...kill the tar lords for living essences (8-10g) the fire elementals for elemental fire (1.5-2g) and I pick flowers as well while I wander around Ungoro playing with horde hehe.

Wisdom from the Puff! Wal-Mart it Baby!

Buy low and sell just under the lowest price at AH if acceptable and go for 24hours. Avoid listing before a maint day that eats into your auction time. Make bid and buyout the same. Instantanious Gratification Baby!....no one like to wait till Auction ends.....

If someone is too low buy theirs and make yours the lowest, but higher than theirs...corner the Orange Juice Market....Mortermer were back! (Trading Places..great supply and demand movie)

Also if there are just too many of a item listed.....then save it....wait till there is one or none listed....that is best time to list....None on AH....hmmm supply down...PRICE HIGH time...also low lvl blues go for more than high lvl blues depending on what they are. Low lvl BLUE daggers, swords, etc.....list for 50 to 100 plus...now is a reg player going to buy it, No, but a rich 60 main or gold buyer doesnt care what the price is; he or she wants the best for the little one. I do not support gold buying, but until Blizzard stops the practice, I will farm them....

More to come from the Puff...stay tuned....

Tips for the auction house:

  • Market to players with PvP twinks. Blue items for levels 18, 19, 28, 29, 38, and 39 sell at ridiculously high prices. For example: I sold a Redbeard Crest for 45g once. Rich players often roll a twink PvP character, which they then deck out with the finest armor, weapons, and enchants.
  • Do not sell common items on the AH on the weekends. Increased activity means low prices--and low profits. Buy underpriced items on the weekends and sell them on Tuesday afternoons.
  • You can auction auction enchanting supplies (dusts, shards, essences) for free (i.e. without paying an AH deposit). This is yet another reason to roll a separate bank/AH character; after you do, teach them Enchanting so they can disenchant (DE) items. When you get a blue or green you don't want, send it to your bank/AH character, then either auction it or DE it and auction the results.
  • In my experience, Recipes, Patterns, and Schematics have lower auction deposits and a higher chance to sell.
  • Sometimes you're better off disenchanting a green or blue and auctioning the result than auctioning the item itself. Use Enchantrix, included in the Auctioneer Complete package, to view what an item will disenchant into.

Gathering
A good way to profit while leveling is via skinning + herb or mining. The idea is that it's much easier to powerlevel a production skill to 300 once you hit 60, where items from the gathering skills while leveling can all be sold for profit. Miri leveled 1-50 with skinning and herb and 51-60 with enchanting and herb. I made enough money to afford a Warden Staff at 43ish (225g) and my epic mount shortly after hitting 60 (800ish g). You can keep grinding money at 60 with the gathering skills as well (I find it tremendously boring though personally :).

Enchanting
I made a tidy sum from enchanting also once I hit 300 skill. I don't think it's any faster than other methods though I like it because I don't have to leave IF. :P I'm lazy. I would just spam what I have in between battleground queues and charge roughly 10% cost of mats for the chant. (It varied more than that, but that's rougly what it was) Doing that in between bg queues netted me around 30-80g a day depending on demand and how much i was paying attention.

Buy Low Sell High
One tip I've read elsewhere and taken advantage of a couple times is the fact that farmers often have certain times by which they need to meet a quota. Right before those times they will often be firesaling items trying to meet the quota. If you can catch some of these, turning them around can be a nice 10-50g profit or more. In general, keep an eye out in IF and on the AH for popular items that might be unusually cheap - arcane crystals, nexus crystals, mooncloth, cured rugged hides, etc. Also, the week that the Darkmoon Faire is in town, Rugged Leather, Thorium Bars, and Dense Stones will generally be 1.5x to 2x what they are normally, if you have the bank space, it's good to save those until then. Auctioneer, Allakhazam, and your guild members can often help in determining whether something is worth it.

Spend Wisely
Probably the single most important thing is spending wisely. Don't waste money on enchants on items that you may only use for a couple levels or if you must have an enchant, get a slightly lower version that's a lot cheaper. You don't need to upgrade greens all the time. I usually only upgrade (when I was leveling) when the stats on my current item are more than 10 pts or so less than a new item and the new item is under like 1g :P

Another principle here is planning to go after, there's no need to buy a green for that slot a level or two before you go for the blue. Kaliban's class loot lists is great for seeing what is available for your class from the different instances: http://69.41.171.43/index.htm

In the End
If you play long enough you'll probably get to a place where gold isn't that useful anymore. Once you get far enough, all you need it for is new enchants, maybe some tradeskill mats to craft something, and maybe a few quests. So don't sweat it, it'll come eventually.... :-)
