For all of you trying to download Counter-Strike from those impossibly slow steam content servers I have an alternative.
First off...get getright http://www.getright.com
ftp://ftp.quicknet.nl/pub...._CS.exe
Then download from there with getright, add more servers if you feel you haven't maxed out your connection. That download above contains the steam client and CS 1.6 in one neat little package. I've tested it, it works. The new CS 1.6, despite what others say, works just great, no more losing sound due to alt tabbing, nice in-game menus. It literally is a whole new game.

That doesn't seem to work any better than Steam doing it...at least Steam is in America.  That ftp is from Alkmaar, The Netherlands lol.

I'm going to see if I have any better luck by using BitTorrent.

But yeah, basically, Steam sucks, and they should have just released a cs1006.exe file on FilePlanet. I'd rather wait three hours in line and download at 60 k/s than wait 24 hours to download at a screaming 6 k/s. Of course, this is also due to the fact that my school's network is completely incompetant event though it's a killer T1 line.

*phew*

i just dled from file planet in 15min... did I miss something?

anyway... CS 1.6 IMO has choppy graphics and laggy poo but I <3 the drop of recoil

Ok, i finally got the steaminstaller_cs.exe file installed, so Steam is working on my computer, but it hasn't updated my Counter-Strike. Is there something else I'm supposed to do, or is CS supposed to be automatically updated?

It's not working on mine either, I log in and it just disappears but the process steam.exe is still running it just doesnt do anything ....

I acctully got in some games after installing that 379mb file but my ping was close to 200, evan when the server selection screen said 29.
Also fps are way lower on the same settings now, feh I think im gonna quit cs if this is how valve is going to support it.

I think I'm just going to post in this thread all day, I finally get steam to do something, and whenever I try to load CS it says 'game currently unavailable' in the error logs it says 'steam is busy' ~ and you have refresh your log-in like every 5 seconds >

//storms to valve headquarters and lays the 'smack' down

everyone is going through steam with CS yes? I know it sounds dumb but my friend tried just going into CS and thinking it was 1.6 ^_^ oh well..

I was reading the User Agreement from the steam installer, and it actually says something along the lines of "being responsible for fees" and "billing information".

Does that mean Steam is a paid service? If I have to pay, I won't be using it. Period.

You guys that already "registered" with Steam: were you aware that it might be a paid (dis)service?

After reading all the "failure" stories, I'm holding on my 1.5>1.6 update...

Aye, I'm also waiting until I absolutely must install Steam to do so. It may update Counter-Strike, but since Natural Selection, to my knowledge, is not yet compatible with Steam, I do believe I'll be holding off.

Rizz is officially not happy with 1.6 or steam.. It just messes up. Im gonna wait for CZ and HL2

im assuming by fees they ment long distance blah blah blah like some other things I've used before, but then again I'm not sure I never read those.

i had no problems with steam or the 1.6 install..

Zealot, I noticed the same choppiness that you mentioned but I played with my res and I think I got that ironed out.

I don't see the riot shield anywhere on my buy menus... am I missing something or was it removed?
