So, I spend a few hundred dollars earlier this year on the courses and testing to receive my A+ certification. I go in to the testing center, pass the test, and receive my certificate in the mail. I then call every computer repair business in Tulsa and ask if any are hiring.

None of them are.

I'm sure that many of you in the information technology field "feel mah pain." Instead of using my computer experience to start a career in IT, I'm working as a photo tech at Walgreens. Now, don't misunderstand me. I understand the importance of humility and it's been a long road from where I began to where I could accept such a job. Before I applied at Walgreens, I searched for computer work for a few months only to find none.

Tulsa, last I checked, has the second highest unemployment rate in the US. It seems that every week, there's rumors about another big company leaving Tulsa. Many computer businesses go under every year and most are too busy trying to stay afloat to concern themselves with hiring new technicians.

I won't lie. Things look grim.

...Okay. Things look terrible.

BUT our God is a miracle-working God, and I am believing for a better job. Of course, it never hurts to enlist the aids of one's peers, so I'm opening this thread as a sort of "Help Tek get a better job so he can spend more time working on the Christian Gamers Alliance and Tribe of Judah, which is what he really wants to be doing in the first place" project.

If anyone knows of any jobs in the Tulsa area or can suggest non-location-specific work (web design, for example), please post the details here. I understand this is a longshot, but I also figure that taking a few minutes to write this post is worth it if it means even the faint possibility of hearing about an excellent job from another CGA community member.

One thing I've looked at lately is freelancing through sites like www.elance.com or something.

These days you need more then just Certs to get a good job. My suggestion, go to college and get a BS and live off financial aid for a while.
 
I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've been looking for a desktop support computer job in the St. Louis area for the past year, but haven't had much luck.

I've currently got a job doing computer support for a local school district, but I'm getting only getting paid about half of what I was making before. (I got the A+ certification last year)

The frustrating thing about my job now is that I'm working with guys who have much less experience than I do, and I'm constantly teaching them how to do the job...but they have their 4-year degrees (and no certifications), so they're considered my seniors and are getting paid almost double what I'm making.

I've finally decided to go back to school and finish my Bachelor degree. It'll be a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science (basically a programming degree).

So far I'm enjoying the C++ class I'm in, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future, I'll have my BA! (It's probably gonna be at least 2+ years since I can only attend school evenings and weekends)
 
.... ooo st louis that is like 4 hrs away from Joplin which is 1.5 hrs away from tulsa.... the possablilities i have for me now when i go broke for a place to stay/eat

Paramedic !!!..always hiring somewhere..If you like long hours and lack of sleep !!! From boredom to an adrenaline rush in seconds !! Driving large vehicles at high speeds with flashing lights and loud sirens !! Plus you get to help people, from the little old lady who fell and broke her hip, to the drunk whom pukes on your boots. Unfortunately you also see dead people and kids from time to time. But all in all the best job I ever had !!
You'll need your EMT certification first, 110 plus hours and then your Medic certification either a 2 year degree or just your certification about 1500 hours classroom and clinical time. And boom yopur a medic and jobs are there...esp in Oklahoma and Texas.

The problem with that is that I don't have the money to take the classes. ;_; I have considered it before, though. My dad even suggested it.

I still might do that, someday. I have some old EMT textbooks in a cabinet somewhere...
 
How is your back ?? This job is a real pain in the back if you have any back trouble. Throw the old EMT books away, almost yearly things change and the standards are revised..I just tossed mine but then they were umm really old..10 years plus..
 
My back's still not in very good shape. I've had a few days recently where I had to be careful how I sat down or bent over to stretch. I keep planning to start a workout routine, but I haven't quite gotten around to it yet. ^_^;;

A quick note: I've put my resume in at a few places online, but am not putting too much faith in those. I'll be looking at some local banks soon since they tend to have better hours, better benefits, and are closed on all major holidays (like July 4, which I had to work at Walgreens earlier this year).

I couldn't afford to relocate to Ohio. ;_; The only cities to which I could consider relocating are Springfield, MO and St. Louis, MO.

I'm going to be calling some banks today and see if they have any teller positions open. It's still not computer work, but, meh, at least then I wouldn't have to haggle endlessly for the hours I want.
 
Okay, I have some good news regarding the Job Search™, but I need to wait until everything's finalized before I announce it.

BUT I am still looking for a Monday through Friday job, preferably 9 to 5 or something similar so I can still work Wednesdays (I attend church Wednesday nights).

So keep posting that information!

I'm doubting that St. Louis's information technology job market could be in a more crapulent state than Oklahoma's, but it sounds like it'd be a tough deal to get my foot in the door of either. ;_;
 
Great news!

I'll begin contract work with a company starting October 25. This job will run Saturdays and Sundays 12PM - 5PM until January 24. It is a temporary assignment and only on weekends, but it pays very well.

I'm still looking for a new Monday through Friday job, so please don't stop praying now! I've met with two employment agencies in Tulsa and even applied at a job with my church, so things are looking up!
