...when things finally come together. A friend of mine gave me some of his leftover computer parts from the machine he built a few years ago. It wasn't a complete machine, so I bought the parts I thought I needed.
Unfortunately, things didn't just work like I wanted them to. I was thick in the middle of school trouble at the time, so after wasting a few hours over a couple of days, the project got shelved until I could devote time and mental energy to figuring out what to do.
Tonight, I decided to finally see what I could get done.
Through the mighty powers of systematic troubleshooting, I managed to get the machine wholly up and running.
...well, I mean, there are a few things that I need to iron out (like getting the HDD indicator light plugged in)... but I have Windows 7 Pro freshly installed and the machine is doing what it's supposed to.
I'm stoked. On the one hand, I'm happy about my triumph. On the other, I'm so excited to finally play the games that were just barely out of reach on my old computer (including TF2 on Tuesday nights... Champions Online... and, teehee!, Starcraft II... not to mention DOWII... which I bought a year ago and have been unable to play since).
For the curious, my old machine was...
P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, Nvidia 6600GT (AGP).
New machine is...
Ath 64x2 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM (got a third gig sittin' here, but it was givin' me grief during Windows install for some reason), and Nvidia 8600GT (PCIe).
No... it's not an amazing machine. Still, it's all the difference I needed to play the games I really wanted to play but just couldn't quite pull off. I'm thrilled. So. Very. Thrilled.
Maybe now Steam will actually serve a purpose for me! XD
