Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the successor to the granddaddy of class-based multiplayer action games and the multiplayer component of The Orange Box, is now available in beta to those who pre-purchase The Orange Box via Steam (www.steamgames.com). Pre-purchasers will find TF2 activated in their Steam account and available for immediate play.

I had originally planned to pre-order TeamFortress 2 as soon as it was available...but that when I was still employed. The bills will get paid since I just completed a one-week assignment with 15 hours of overtime, but I'm still torn on whether or not to take the $45 plunge and get the Orange Box.

If I were to pick up the Orange Box, would anyone be willing to buy my extra copy of Half-Life 2? I figure it sells for $20 new on Steam, so I would sell my extra copy for $10. That would help ease the sting of the $45 price tag for the Orange Box.

I've purchased it already and am playing the TF2 Beta and can tell you it is quite an awesome game and not even taking episode 2 or Portal into account would have been worth my $45.

i may get it for my xbox 360. I have Halflife 2 on my PC, but I tend to prefer console gaming (when I'm not playing WoW on my macbook at least)

You sound like me. I'm always sort of afraid to spend money. I was determined to buy Metroid Prime 3, but I could get myself to spend the bling. But as my mom always says, "God gave you that money to use it. Yes, you have to save some, but you need to splurge every once in a while."

Mac FTW!

I'm weak.

I buckled.

I pre-ordered the Orange Box earlier tonight. I've already downloaded TeamFortress 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1.

I'm going to load up TF2 and check it out. :)

I'm going to load up TF2 and check it out. :)
This is a brief summary of my gaming experience tonight:
  • I loaded TF2.
  • TF2 halted at the Retrieving Server Info screen.
  • I rebooted.
  • I loaded TF2.
  • I joined a server.
  • I died.
  • TF2 locked up.
  • I killed the hl2.exe process.
  • I loaded TF2.
  • I joined a server.
  • I died.
  • I died again.
  • TF2 locked up.
  • I killed the hl2.exe process.
  • I loaded Fortress Forever.
  • I played two rounds without any crashes.
  • I dropped from Fortress Forever.
  • I invited my wife to try out Peggle Extreme (a casual gamer title packed with the Orange Box set as a bonus).
  • I watched my wife play all ten levels of Peggle Extreme.
  • I played all ten levels of Peggle Extreme.
  • My wife and I played against each other in Peggle Extreme's Duel mode. (She won 2 games to 1, by the way.)
  • I remarked, "I just paid $45 for a Popcap game demo and a bonus executable that does nothing but crash." :p
I'll give TeamFortress 2 another go tomorrow.

In the meantime, I think I'll sneak in one more game of Peggle Deluxe before bed...

I would make sure you are running the most up to date drivers. I was getting a ton of crashes then updated to newest on my 8800 GTS and haven't crashed since.

The most recent drivers available for my video card in my Dell notebook are dated Jan. 18, 2006. The standard nVIDIA drivers refuse to install.

Dell fails at drivers.

generally it is like that with any laptop. The companies screw with the graphics interfaces so much that nvidia refuses to ship generic drivers that will work on all of them because they have to insure compatibility with everything.
