Tek's writing challenge: SigInt

This is a fragment for the story idea I'm working out....
_________
"Where?" The noise echoed throughout the room, untraceable to a single source.

"Does where matter?" Deiten paced from one end of the oak table to another. "This is not Mandar. We can be reached within a day nonetheless. And they will find whatever taint they wish to."

Bosen ran one hand through ebony hair until it caught on a snarl. "But I feel no sickness. And they would not risk losing the mines."

"Would they?" Dieten said. "Perhaps you think too much of their greed and too little of their fear. Miners can be replaced in time." He dropped one fist to the table and ran his finger across the rough wood. "But I have never heard of this disease they speak of."

I'm saying that he probably has more talent than me, and thus will probably reach a higher level of writing skill in time.

I personally think talent is a very small part of the writing equation - seems to me that lots of writers with talent write very poorly because they are too lazy to develop good writing skills - and conversely, lots of writers with tons of experience but much less talent write fantastic stuff.

I spent days, months, analyzing words. Even as a child I pored over meanings, considered the influence of language. What effect would it have where there was no word for "good", merely one for "useful"?

But such was useless, just as my presence here is. Though it's not as if they had an expert in xenolinguistics to turn to.

Everything smells musty, or rotten, or bitter, that I can smell. What little I can smell. All artifacts, and records released have some trace of such scent.

I taped a copy of "The Four-Hour Fugue" to my superior's door with my resignation. They'll need someone without a cold to translate this.
____________
If anyone recognizes the good/useful reference I'll be surprised, if anyone's actually read "The Four-Hour Fugue" I'll be quite pleased.

100 words today: story section posted on CCGR, worked on chapter three of my novel, having lost all of said chapter when my laptop puked.

Serious, appropriate response: Sorry to hear that you lost your work. Just in case your misery would enjoy some company - I lost about 2-3 hours of very intensive work on a project of mine about a month ago, when Word locked up, and I was NEVER able to quite get it back up to the same level of quality again. Although the auto-save was set properly and had never failed me before...it failed me then, and for some reason didn't save over a period of hours. What was I thinking, trusting a Microsoft product to do what it was programmed to do? Lesson learned. :p

Joking response meant to cheer you up: Hey, just remember - Jesus saves. And he also makes frequent backups to removable media. Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

Sorry for spacing out on this thread.:( I've been doing some writing on CCGR and working on my novel lately-not yesterday, though, because of work.

I need to post something here soon, though, I suppose.

This piece is related to something I've been working on on CCGR-it and the novel have been most of my writing for a bit.
________
Close. Too close. He's afraid of me now. I never wanted to scare him, never wanted this.

I told him to leave!

He's not awake when I leave. Dead? Don't know, can't remember.

Three men are standing on the street corner. All have hoods pulled over their heads, and one bumps me when I walk by.

"Going somewhere, lady," he says, sneering. "We can escort you."

"No."

One of them grabs my arm, and another draws a knife. "Yes."

I laugh.

Updates are fine, don't have to post every day - the important thing is that you're writing just about every day. Great work!
